Title: Post on mudsill vs. on post base
Post by: kodl on October 12, 2018, 12:51:26 AM
Here is the situation:
Wood framing with 2x studs. Wood post between studs.

Here is the question:
Why should i cut the mudsill and place metal post base in concrete instead of placing the post straight on top of mudsill?
1) placing straight on mudsill is much easier
2) mudsill compression capacity is higher than post bases like simpson CBSQ or ABU.

Thanks.

Check uplift and it sounds fine.

So the only reason why i would use metal post base vs. post on top of mudsill is the uplift?

No uplift = no need for post base? Just toe nail or A35 clips to mudsill?

You need to restrain framing laterally, and up, and down. It sounded like this was a post within a wall so I'm assuming lateral has been handled, down you said was better on the mudsill than in the post base... that leaves up. Toenails or an A35 might not be enough uplift resistance, or you may need none. So the answer is "it depends" but just because they make something they call a post base doesn't necessarily mean that all posts need one. It's the old, quantify the loads and provide resistance. There are usually multiple ways to skin the cat.
