Title: Its been awhile
Post by: Jeff on October 15, 2018, 07:49:23 PM
I have the Wood-Mizer all prepped to go on a journey. I'm just waiting for a slot in the weather where I can get it the 187 miles to the U.P. and saw up the cedar and Tamarack that it stacked on my property. It was not running right the last I tried to use it. Had to pull the choke to keep it running. I trouble shot it to being the old gas line and bulb. So, the 1986 wood-mizer lt30 has a new tank fittings and fuel line.  This is a solo journey.

Furby sent me these photos yesterday. I gave him some cedar and this is what is left on the ground for me to get sawed. He hauled home a trailer and truck load. That tamarack is going to be a handful for just me and a manual mill.

As long as possible! I'll take my crossbow too. Its suppose to snow Wednesday but be decent Thursday. (50) so I'll probably go up Wednesday. I'm just going to cant the cedar and I'm not sure about the tamarack.

I tried to get him but hes like a shrew.

Pretty logs. Is your tractor up there or other handling equipment? Good luck on the sawing and the hunting. Stay safe.

Quad with a winch is up there. That's it. My tractor doesn't have any real log handling abilities.

It sounds like a good time. BTW, the Onan is alive and ready to be transplanted on my LT30. Did you have any clearance issues by the starter with the engine lifting mechanism?  looks like it's going to be close.

Don't know what the wood will look like but you sure have some pretty surroundings to be working in. Our leaves here look like they are going to fall before they ever turn colors this year. We even have a street festival (Railroad Days) this weekend with special trains coming along the New River Valley and stop to let people take pictures of the foliage. Looks like I need to send them your way.

Don't get so tied up sawing you forget about that crossbow too. I'd love to see a picture of a big deer hanging on one of those pretty red maples. Take care.

Looks like a great day in the woods. I'm jealous, as I sit in the office wishing my life away, lol.
I also saw a lot of poor wood that I haul out. At 50+ yrs, I have realized that my good wood is declining and as it dies and falls, that is when I haul it out to saw. :-\
Thanks for sharing your time with us.

No real plans on the cedar. The logs just needed to be sawn and not spend another u.p. winter on the ground. I'll haul them home and find a use for them.

I'm glad I learned my lesson earlier this year and always disengage the saw now when crossing behind it, which is every cut up here this happened after reengaging and starting towards the cut, not even to it. I'm still using bands that came with the mill.

My buddy @Harold (http://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=19) came up to pick up a quad he bought and to haul all my cedar back home for me. There was 47 cedar logs. 6x6s, 8x8s, 4x6s and a couple 4x4s.
Today I should finish up the tamarack which has been a lot of work for not much return.

I arrived back home with mill in tow at 8:30 this morning after loading and sawing and swamping 91 logs. 45 cedar and 46 tamarack. Got rid of all the half rotten tamarack slabwood after meeting a new friend that stopped by to inquire. An elderly yooper finlander logger, sawmiller and great lakes sailor.  Hes a colorful man with a smoking blue vocabulary and we got along just fine. He lost his wife 3 months ago.

Here is the last pics I took. One was a neat pitch pocket in the tamarack.

You assume correctly. I had to settle for red solo cup showers. There is a tub in the cabin and a septic tank, but we have to carry in water.  I fill a half a five gallon pail with water and a big pot we have on the stove. Heat the pot to boiling and poor it in the half a pail of colw water and it makes it just right. Set the pail in the tub and use the plastic cup to take a shower. It works.

In 5 gallons of water there are only 640 ounces.
1500 times would mean a mighty small Solo cup - I've never seen one that small.
Me thinks you got the decimal in the wrong place.

Well GAB, its like this.....First, he has to get wet....250 cups
Then lather up and shampoo.....nuther 150 to work the "dry" spots..
THEN rinsing soap/lather from hair, beard, armpits, nether regions and ears ...maybe 600....see we are at 1000 already...Id go on but the mental images I would create could be disturbing to some.... :D :D :D :D

Yup, there are 40 16oz cup fills. It only takes about 4 to get wet, leaving plenty left to rinse after the sudzin.

Exactly the same method.  2/3 of a 5 gal pail of water carried from wherever, 1/3 of that heated to boil in a pot on the camp stove or gas grill, and pour back into the bucket with the rest, small pot or can or whatever for a dipper, no excuse not to have a luxurious shower wherever.   And you don't have to be standing in the tub either  :o :o :o, but that works too.

I hope the cabin was well heated when you were solo cupping it.  So did the old logger take the slabs off your hands?  And now all your logs up there are done milled?  So I take it you'll break them down further at home as you need?  I'm impressed you're moving all that material by hand!
Title: Re: Its been awhile
Post by: Jeff on October 28, 2018, 07:13:35 PM
Yes, the cabin is warm and comfortable. The only inconvenience is the water not being piped in, but honestly it isn't that big a deal unless your a wife. :D

All the logs are sawn that were piled on my property and all the cedar hauled home. There is probably 1000ft of tamarack in cant form still up there. Not sure what to do with that yet. The cedar will be resawn down here. Wish I had a gang saw and a 4 sided planer, id make paneling out of it.

Gary the old logger is quite the fellow. Is wife died suddenly about 3 months ago and I'm sure he just doesn't know what to do with himself. He took me over to his House/cabin to show it to me. His children want himn to go to Florida for the winter. He doesn't want to go. He promised them he would go try it for a month. That is where the slab would comes in. He was looking for some kindling to have on hand back as his place, because he has full intentions on "bugging out" on them at the end of the month to come home to the U.P. :)   His wife Geraldine was a painter and he showed me several of her paintings with great pride, and we discussed whether a rose of sharon would survive planted near the house as she had always wanted one. Gary wears a brace on one leg, as he had a form of polio as a youngster. He gets around well enough to have worked as a handfeller in the woods of the U.P. on the shores of Lake superior as well as Drummond Island. He also was a sawmill hand and worked on the freighters. Like I said, his vocabulary is colorful and that's certainly why.  I'm sure people that see me on here think I am a prude due to the rules we have in place, but I also spent my working life up until 2005 in very similar working environments, so its something I know very well. I also know how to turn mine off. Not sure Gary can or not yet. :D

I gave him one of my biz cards, but I am sure he is not the internet type. He did call our home phone number the night before I left seeing if I made it home ok with the mill, thinking I had left that evening. I plan on going up and seeing him after I vote and before he leaves for Florida. He is only about 4 miles from the cabin, so its nice to have someone to visit with close again now that Lou is gone.

Gary took me across the road to see an Old Truck I had been wanting a close up look at since I spotted it probably 35 years ago. He said it has been sitting in the back of that field for at least 50 years without moving. He says the old fart that owns it will let it rust into the ground. Its a 39 dodge. Right up my alley. :D It was last plated the year I was born.

Do I smell a new project in the works? Maybe a new FF truck? Great story about Gary. The old boy is obviously hurting and greiving his loss. Good on you for taking an interest and offering your friendship.

I know where there's an old dodge truck out of Bonanza Oregon and it has probably been sitting and rusting for just about the same amount of time. The one thing it has going for it is the fact that here on Oregon's high desert we only get about 16" of precipitation a year so it takes a little longer for it to rust into the ground

Nice truck.  I'd like to do a truck project.  I have two car projects to finish first.  Hey, I finished two already and the next two are in much better condition.

From what I can see, this truck is complete other than the generator and voltage regulator. As Gary said though, the old guy wont let it go. A large timberframe barn is collapsed there o top of an old John deer tractor. He had a chance to sell the barn several years ago and did not.
