Title: MS 441 Stihl
Post by: Deere80 on October 29, 2018, 05:03:16 PM
I have a chance to buy a MS441 for $350 it appears to be in nice shape, it is a 2006 model is that a good deal or not?  I have a 440 mag, 260 pro, 026, and a 460 mag so really don't need another in the same range as the ones I already have.

Then it is not a bargain, you don't need it. I would NEED a saw pretty bad to pay 350 bucks for it

That's not a bad price if it runs and is clean. There are a lot of the Stihl crowd that never warmed up to them. I would prefer a later version myself. I happen to like the "C" model's...exactly what many don't like. But that's me, always a bit off the main stream. I still think the biggest reason for the hate was they have the spring anti vib and feel more like a Husqvarna than a Stihl of those years. Have the flywheel fed air box like the Jonsereds/Husqvarna's had as well. They remind me a lot of the Husqvarna 576's. ( I have two BTW, one C on not...both are smooth decent running saws)

Over the years since the 441 introduction talking to many arborists around the world, many of them warmed up to the saw.
But then the 461became the common choice with more bang for the buck. Now with the new 462 it's the best thing since sliced bread :D

$350 for a saw worth over double in retail price is a good deal if everything on it is sound.
The 441 is a pro grade saw, it's not a 391.

35 years ago I could sell my well worn 1 year old Stihl logging saw for $300 that was $550 with tax new.
Always bought a new saw once a year.

$300 for a used pro saw seems to be still a standard even today.

Well I bought it for $300 with 5 chains, I figured if I don't like it I could always resell it for what I paid.

HolmenTree..what do you mean that its not a 391?  Is the 391 a better saw?

Your saw is the stronger of the two, the 391 is a completely different unit better suited for farm/ranch work.

Good deal, even has a pro grade ES bar!!
Yep like sawguy21 says 391 is a lower end saw. Also has a plastic crankcase your pro level 441 has a magnesium crankcase.

That is what I was thinking but how you worded it I was questioning myself.

The gentleman I bought it from was in his mid 70s and was having shoulder surgery on this Friday so he is giving up on cutting fire wood.  He bought it new in 2006 and would cut 3 cords a year in firewood is it.  So it has not seen a lot of use.

You can't go wrong there, sounds like a nice saw.
39 years ago I sold a well worn Jonsereds 90 to a homeowner, he's still cutting his winter wood with it today.

Not bad! The 391's have issues. Really soft & "squishy" anti vib and the throttle rod from the trigger to the carb linkage rides on plastic. Not one of Stihl's better saws. MUCH prefer a 441!
