Title: New Photo Gallery System
Post by: Jeff on February 09, 2005, 02:42:03 PM
https://forestryforum.com/gallery (https://forestryforum.com/gallery)

400 pixles wide as a maximum in width, and file size of 20k

I have the new photo system ready to go. Some of you may find it awkward at first but hopefully you will learn to like it. The following statements and instructions are in no paticular order. :D  I'll add to this as I think of things.

The new system is essentially a personal photo gallery for every registered member.  It is tied to your user name and password and each picture you use on the forum will be kept in albums that you create in your gallery. Photos are added to the forum by copying code from your pictures and pasteing that in your post to make the picture appear, pretty much like you did with the old gallery.

Gallery photos are intended for use on the forestry forum. These albums are not private and are viewable by anyone, but can only be added to by a registered member. The one strict rule I will have on use is, if you have a picture in your gallery that appears within the forum, you must not ever delete it or we will lose the photo from the thread.

The amount of space you have in your gallery is tied to the number of posts you have. The different member groups have different amounts of photo space.

Getting Started

Go to the gallery at https://forestryforum.com/gallery
If you are logged on to the forum, you will also be logged on there. You will also see a link to the gallery when you go to make a post by clicking the "Additional options" link.

You might want to read over the FAQ's by clicking the link at the top of the gallery page.

You must create an album before you can upload pictures.
You need to be in "Admin mode" to create albums or upload photos to your albums.

There are a lot of options within the gallery. Look around and try to help each other as you figure things out.

I would like a note from the person that feels they are the first to add a photo to the forum from thier new photo Gallery. :)

I need a nap. :)

Don't know if I'm the first but I did it
I did it  ;D

;D :P ;D
Look for the little bitty letters just below the photo and don't forget the image tag box from the row above the post like it used to be.......Got that ???

Not sure if it works in mac, but by clicking on the copy code button, it should copy that code. You dont have to see it. :) Remember code isnt anything complex. Its simply the photo address between two image tags. Thos tags tell the photo to appear in the post.  Without the tags, and just the address, you still get the picture, you just have to click on the link to see it.

Far as I know Joan, you were first! :)

Another request would be to please dont upload photos that already exist in the other galleries. Its just a waste of your space as all the previously uploaded photos are all still available and will remain in thier original galleries.

Spruce bunny got her porky on not to long after I opened the gallery. Shes got dat photo thing down!

I would like some commentary on this thing. I realize its still going to be tough for everybody it was always tough for, but I still am of the mind, that if you really want to post pictures, you will take the time to learn how it is done.  :)

Kevin

The downside is that all the photos are dumped into one big unmanagable heap again for one. Another is tha file names are stripped so they can not be used again somewhere else easily, the third is that they must always be at the bottom of the post, the fourth is that it makes it TO easy to post and those that want to flood us with junk will, how many more do you want? :)

This system took me a ton of time and I never would have done it if there was an adequate system in place. I would be willing to even go back to the original way if someone wants to volunteer to sort the next 10.000 photos.

I LOVE IT!  I've got a few pictures out there and didn't even have to read the instructions - much.

Sometimes you snap a picture and not know what you have until you get home and look at it.   I like this one.

I got my pics into my album very easily and ran them through the jpg optimizer like I always did but now I have to somehow change the file to a allowed file because I keep getting jpg file not allowed . I have windows xp and use my microsoft picture it to reduce picture size and then the jpg optimizer so I guess when before I pull my pic out of "picture it" I must make the change there to the allowed file type. Hep me Hep me !   :D

Post by: Jeff on February 09, 2005, 07:12:50 PM
Your gallery number is also the same as your forum number. Maybe some of you didnt realize it, but in the big change over the new software assigned everyone a number, and that number also represents what number your registration was. I got lucky and was number 1. :D

Anyhow, knowing that, I should be able to configure a link that appears in everyone's profile that will take you to thier personal photo gallery.  You can also link to your gallery from a website. :)
Title: Re: New Photo Gallery System
Post by: Jeff on February 09, 2005, 07:15:43 PM
Ungle Buck, are you talking about the gallery? or the attachment manager? The Attachment manager is the only place you should get a not allowed warning. That is set to only accept .txt, .doc and .pdf files.

You can not upload and attach photos from a post box any longer.

What's this number?  Where do you see your number?  I want to be number 007.

Well Jeff...all I can say is that ya have done one dang fine job tha last week or two...movin' and changing the forum software...gettin' cut on...sortin' all dem pictures...setting up a new member photo gallery...

Now when ya first said ya was gonna do all this in the record time that ya set...

I thought to myself "when pigs fly" 8)

So I guess this is a dual purpose post...to give ya a big attaboy...and to post my first pix with the new picture postin' tek-neek ;D :D ;D

Well it do appear that some of ya are taking to it O.K.  One thing about this system, if ya put 17 of the same photo in yer gallery, everybody will know it. :D  Actually, this should make it very convenient for most people. 9 times out of 10 when you are looking for a photo, its your own, and this is great for that.

I DO like the feature you have in the "image Archive" that lets you search for a post that has a pictue in it.

Will that be possable with the new photo gallery?

Red, you dont need your number, its just a conversation topic.  You dont move photos anywhere.  If you want to ad photos to the forum in the futurem you must use the gallery. You must first create an album so you have a place to upload the photos to.

Well I have re-read everything I possibly can and I just cant figure out what or why I cant get my pics in the allowed files of txt,doc  or  pdf . I had no trouble getting pics into my new album but I am going wrong somewhere because I just keep will not accept jpg file and I suppose my problem lies right there as to what is a jpg or txt, doc, pdf etc...  I have to figure out how make my pics to the allowed file instead of jpg . Thats my trouble right there so when I figure that out I got the procedure down but the pics I sent to my album are jpg and they should be txt,doc or pdf.  I be back later . My brain is melting over something very simple but I will laugh at myself when I get a picture posted in a thread .

your brain is melting too? i thought that was the elm in the stove!
i have managed to find most of my photos, and i wrote down where they are. i dont have very many, but more than i thought.

i figger out when i finally figger it out, my # will be there for reference, i want in on the conversation.

Your photos are in the albun buck. You DO NOT USE the file attachment facility in the post box. You copy the code from you photo in the gallery and paste it in a post.  In fact, I am going to get rid of the uplaod attachment thing right now. It has NOTHING to do with picutres.

If you're going to give up,  at least give up on a high note.  I did fingure out if I slide my mouse pointer over the Instant Message icon,  the link deal pops up and ends with a "u-34".   If I slide it over the IM in your post,  it ends with "u=1".

Ah..HA! ;)

But when I slide my mouse pointer over someone else's IM icon,  and they ain't logged in,   I don't get nothing like that. :(

If water drips on a stone long enough..... :D

I click the "click to copy photo insertion code" and it lights up the code but I just dont know how to paste it over to my post. Not tryin' to take Jeff's place or nuthin...but thought I would try to help some to get their pix to show in the posts...

Seein's how most have figured out how to upload to their galleries, I won't go there...

When you are viewing your's (or the way I understand it any gallery)...ya can double click on the thumbnail of the pix that ya want in your post...and it will give ya the following screen....

Then I just hilite the "code" shown between the 2 red arrows....copy it....then click in yer reply window where ya want to insert the pix....paste it.....and ya should be good to go  ;)

I'm sure when Jeff gets time to catch his breath (he's been a busy little boy lately) there will be a better set of 'structions available....

Arthur_Dyason I certainly don't consider any of you folks numbers so I hope that is not the implication. I was merely observing a condition in the software that might allow me to develop some more improvements and tools for the forestry forum's family of members to use.  :)

Speaking of tools, has anyone used the gallery to send an e-card yet?  Pretty cool. It even gets sent with a Forestry Forum stamp. ;)  Also you can rate photos that you see that you really like. I rated one this morning that I thought was pretty neat, Hokiemill's new license plate. Thats a good one. :)

It does not exist yet, as I am not sure how I want it to appear. The members galleries can be viewed by the public, but only used by members so I am not sure that a public link is what I want to do yet. When I get feeling better I'll get on it. I thought a better way to do it would be a link within your profiles to your gallery if you have one. Thats why I mentioned the numbers pehaps being important, that I could some how tie those things together.

Jeff

The Prisoner is just a TV seriers from the 60's shown in the UK.

Everyone was only known as a number and that was #6 catch phrase.

Everyone are spies kept on an island with no escape.  If you do a very large white balloon always brings you back.

If you ever see it on cable or video you would understand the statement.

I know I am goin gto spend way too many hours a 'little sidetracked' in the gallery, already got me once and you can all see the proof!! ;D

I go in there to do my own pics and then saw that table - well that was it for me, it's now nearly 2 hours later and still no pics loaded in my folder - not because of probs but the sidetrackin ::) :D

Ah well  it happens

I've not posted any photos from my album yet, I only have one there now, but I think it's a real slick facility. I did notice the e-card function after I clicked a couple times to get to the editor/slideshow window. I also noticed Firefoxe's dilemna with the copy code feature, but it's no trouble to highlight the code as it's presented.  8) 8)

Its you. :D

There is a link on the forum tool bar that says image archive. Any image in there can be added to the forum. PLEASE do not add images to the new gallery that are already on the server. It unnecessarily takes up server space.  The archive will always be there. It contains every phot uploaded to the forum up to the server change. :)

Anyone that is adding redundant images, please delete them?
Title: Re: New Photo Gallery System
Post by: SwampDonkey on February 13, 2005, 01:08:20 PM
FD
I'm not sure that you can add them from the archive to your personal gallery. But, to post a picture from the old archive, first go into the 'image archive' via the menu bar. Then select the category to view and the thumnails load on your screen. Then double click an image and the code will appear under the image which you can copy then paste into your thread post. While still viewing the image in the archive you can do a search for any threads that image was used in. But, as I said I don't think you can move the images from the achives to your personal albums.

Jeff, correct me if I'm wrong.

I am beginning to wish I had done things differently on the archive. Its a different software then the new gallery.  With the new gallery I have a ton of options using php on how to use the images, where as the archives, I am limited. I could always move ALL the archives into the new gallery but that means a bunch more work.

Here is an examplo of what I can and plan on doing with the new galleries. You know how the random photo on the front page has always been a source of interest but also a pain in the butt?  You can't tell where it came from or what it refers to. Well, we can change that now, but only using the new galleries. How about NINE random photos, each with a link? 8)

Here is a test page I am working on that has features using the new gallery back end.

Wow, that's neat. Does it matter if a description is inserted with the image, in the new Galleries??/ I did not put descriptions this first time around. I believe they can be added, right???

Sure would be nice if everyone put an ID code on their pics in their file, before uploading. Would save a lot of frustration, if ya wanted to contact the pic owner for a question or comment ???

Got any more slick ideas ???  You are doing a fabulous job with this facelift.  ;) ;D ;D ;D

Harold, all photos have more information about them underneath, as to photo owner. Yes you can add descriptions any time, also , members can comment on the photos, or "Vote" for photos they like.  You can also create a favorites list that you can add other members photos to so you can find them later.

I am experimenting with HO HUM putting our just created archives, in with our gallery system.  Very doable to port stuff over there, it just depends on weather I can make the search, search the old images on the forum or not.  It only tookme a few moments to create the animal1 directory in archives but so far, no luck in making a search work.  >:(

There is a box to check or uncheck wether you want those emails.

Post by: Jeff on February 14, 2005, 02:47:09 PM
Well, now we have a newer new system for our archives. I now have everything over to the new gallery system.  THis sysem counts and now I can see exactly how many photos we have. I over guestimated before. I said the number was something less then 10,000  but actually as of this post it is:

8325 files in 123 albums and 30 categories  :D

I see there are still a lot of dupes in the archives that I hope to weed out as I find them. The problem is you gotta search every one of the copies and find which photo actually made it to the forum, and then delete the others. Really, pretty simple now.

THere is also an internal search for images if you didnt notice it yet. You can search for images by keyword. It searches the gallery for certain types of photos, not the forum.

Anyway, glad thats done, now I can go delete the 8000 some off files that were part of the old "new" archive from last week.  Lots of this stuff that I have been doing just takes a few clicks then lots of waiting, so not much to it and good chances for naps. ;)

ther is a link in the header portion of the page that says either  admin mode or user mode. If it says user mode, it means that you are IN admin mode, and if it says Admin Mode, it means you are in User mode.

By browse forms, i mean the buttons you click on the webpage that lets you browse the files on your computer, so you can select the file you wish to upload.  once you select the file, you click the "continue" button. Now, if the  file dementions are within limits, the file will upload, and you can continue to add a title for your picture and a discription

what constitutes a view? does it count the number of times the photo is clicked on, does it count the number of times that the thread containing the photo is opened? does it count the times the photo is flashed up on the randum photo section? theres so many stats for this new forum i think jeff needs a stat-a-stishion. seems the ol' kamp has been looked at 200 some times, find that a bit hard to beleive.
Title: Re: New Photo Gallery System

Why so hard to believe?  The forum is getting an AVERAGE of over 22,000 web page viewed a day, and running around 1500 visitors a day, sometimes upwards of that.

To tell you the truth red, I am not sure what is constitutes a count, but I have to believe it can only be the random photo and direct viewing in the gallery.

Sorry, Jeff. Sorry! *wrigting an 8 in the gravel with my toe and stare it* Think I have to spend some more time reading.

Or did You hide the instructions in Swedish somewhere? :D :D ;) Should certainly save me some time.

This thread is on the 8 page and I ain't read all of it... :'(

But I got a question?

How does the "Favorites" work?   I was in the Gallery this afternoon lookin' at pictures and a number of them I clicked on add to Favorites - thinking I was saving to Favorites.   I get on now and click on My Favorites in the menu and it comes up with 0 saved.

Where did I go wrong? ::)

And.  AND?  I still ain't found the link to the Gallery on the main page. :-[

There is a link to the gallery at the top of each page called "Image Archive", are you looking for something else besides that?

Are you talking about a link to the galleries on the main gallery page? Just exit Admin mode.

Don't know what ya did wrong Bibby, but I added pics to my favorites, in both Admin mode and user mode. Signed out, closed the browser down, came back, and they were still there.

You mean this (https://forestryforum.com/board/Themes/classic/images/imagearchive.gif)?

Wasn't it the link to the old style image archive?

I got one favorite to work.  I don't know what I did different.

It was the link to the old archive, but it's been changed and now you can use it to access the archives and the new members galleries.

I was looking for some online images to use on another forum. I used the search function, and typed in the image name. The search turned up the post that the image was on, +, it allowed me to read the original post. Awesome, is all I can say about the search feature. Great addition, Boss. 8)

Harold, Manybe I misunderstood. You didnt mean you were going to link images on our forum to another forum (outside of the forestry forum) did you?  If that is what you mean, please dont allow other forums to be eating our band width.

When looking at one of the archive gallerys is there an option as to how many pictures can be displayed?

Even with my pokey dial up I would set it for something like 100 pics and take a nap while they came up.

Yes there is an option, but its an option that effects everyone.

I upped the number of photos on a page. Chet, I want to use you as a gauge because I know how your connection is.  Lets find out what the right number is.  Give it a check. More photos, or less from where it stands now?

Smokes right along tonight. But my connection is a lot slower sometimes compared to what it is right now.  :-\

Ok Jeff, any pointers on how to find the photos i've already uploaded, short of going thru' all of them 1 at a time? It would be usefull to include the username in the search function for photos that way we could look at all we've uploaded with one search. What do you think?

I have no way of knowing what you named the photos you uploaded before. If you know, you can search the file name, using the search on the gallery, not on the forum. Folks that took Toms advice of putting a special prefix at the beginning of their file names have a great advantage of finding thier old photos.

From now on, your photos all go in your gallery so you can find them easily.

I was refering to the name that was asked for when uploading photos to the old system. Is that attached to the photo in any way that I could search for. I also have each photo that I uploaded with the file name used on my computer, so I could find them that way. But I'm just basicly lazy you know.

The old system does not exist, so nope, you cant do it.

Hey Jeff, I'm barely computer literate. How do I copy a picture from Charlie's gallery and include it in a reply?

Thanks

Ernie

I was going to do it, but figured Charlie has plans of his own, thats why he uploaded the photos, However, you can attach ANY forum photo, the same way you do your own

Rbarshaw,
It's still doing it one at a time, but as long as you posted them, they are easy to find by pulling up all your old posts via your profile section. That will probly get most of them to you the fastest.

Well, the gallery if for that, storing photos to post within the forum. Old photos that were not used on the forum are of no value as far as i am concerned. There were lots of those I found when I did the first sort, in fact, I found where it looked like someone was using the forum to serve the photos for thier webpage, including the buttons for thier menu. They probably had a funny looking webpage for awhile after I deleted all of those.

I wonder why anyone would want to do that, unless they had more files than they have storage space allocated on their site. Odd  :-\

I figured out my Favorite confusion.  I got to the office this morning and all the Favorites I'd saved last week were there.    smiley_headscratch

So .... That tells me,  the "Favorite" list (at least the links) are saved local or somehow keyed to the PC.  Different PC,  Different Favorite list.

As I use three PCs,  it'd sure be nice if they were the same list.

I'm not sure, but it might be using the 'cookie' system.
