Title: What type of tree...

Need help identifying this tree in winter 
Southern Ontario 
Buds are opposite
Bark is smooth but speckled
Twigs go from greenish to purple at ends
Stumped???

Might be box elder {Acer segundo] but I don't know much about trees up your way....

striped Maple,Acer pensylvanicum. Will have big leaves this summer.
