I've been reading for probably 5 or 6 years now and finally got my wife to sign me up! ;D I'm not good at this new technology stuff, guess I'm an old redneck now, but I'm gonna give it a try! :D Just wanted to say hello to all. smiley_wavy
Welcome aboard Mr Cartwright. How's everything on the Ponderosa?
Lol, that's been the story of my life! ( Cartwright's and the Ponderosa that is) All is well just making sawdust out of some big old loblolly pine the last few days. ;)
good to cya here!
Anybody that greets with "Y'all" is ok in my book. Glad to have you here.
Thanks Yellowhammer! Like I said " I'm just an old redneck " Lol! :D ;D
Loblolly eh? That's so annoying. I can't type loblolly without a smiley face.
Where are you located? I have big loblolly at my place in MO that were planted 60 years ago by my dad and grandparents. The mature trees do fine, but the young ones struggle with ice and snow.
123maxbars thank you. ;)
Firefighter I got the smiley to! Thought I was a little crazy. These are between 55 and 58 years old. Customer planted them when he was a youngster and he's 68 now. I'm on the NC/Va line about middle of the state. We got some nice short leaf to.
It's hard on me with all the pine being I'm a NHLA hardwood lumber inspector in my past life! ::) Now I saw just about anything!
I think it was in 2002 we had a bad freezing rain and ice storm that tore up the pines around here something terrible.
Welcome Mr. Cartwright! People are always asking about my brother, Darrel.
I don't know why people "lurk" so long? Great resource and conversation here. People should just jump in. Welcome. So you obviously have a mill. You can go to your profile and add where you're from and what mill you have. It will then show up in every post. Helps people in discussion to know what area you're in, and what mill you have.
Welcome to the forum Mr Cartwright . Yeah I get the questions about my brother darrel as well...
Cartwright,welcome to the forum.
Been sawing long? ;D
Whatcha got for a mill?
Thanks cfarm, Darrell, and Brad. I hadn't got chance to do the profile thing yet. Gonna try to get that done after sawing today. I've been going to different sawmills with my father since around age 4 and started sight grading hardwood around age 11. I got a 2013 Lt 50 with 47hp and all the bells n whistles. Y'all have a blessed day! thumbs-up
Welcome Cartwright!. What part of the world you in?
North Carolina. About a hour north of Durham right on the NC/Va line.
And thank you for the warm welcome marcnaz! smiley_thumbsup
Welcome to the FF, Cartwright.
Mr C,
Welcome to the FF. Don't pay much attention to these guys picking at you about your famous relatives. They beat me up pretty bad about sawing Rosa (I was 60 years old before I ever saw a Ponderosa Pine so I was petty gullible) one time not knowing how sensitive I am about things like that. :D Most of them are pretty good guys - even some of the ones that don't like grits yet. I'm anxious to see your profile updated. Sounds like a real nice mill you are using so instead of questions you can probably help educate and improve the skills the rest of us have or are trying to achieve.
NC/VA line - where is that? We drive down I-77 from S. WV to see our daughter, SIL and grandchildren (1 just arrived last month) in Charlotte NC so we may be coming pretty close to your neck of the woods.
Edit/Add-on: As to name issues I have a 3rd cousin whose name is Billy Lovelace. He used to run a gas station down in N. Central Fla and in the early 70's or there-abouts when Linda Lovelace became famous (Infamous?) people would drive up and see his name tag and snicker and ask "Lovelace - any relation to Linda Lovelace?" Billy would put on a real hangdog face and reply "Yeah, she's my sister but we don't talk about her much. She went off and made it big in the movie industry and don't send no money home to Ma and Pa and its pretty embarrassing to the rest of the family." The customer would shake his head and walk off without saying another word but they must have been thinking "Does this idiot actually know what kind of movies she is making?"
Right back at ya cartwright
Finally got a chance to do profile thing. Hope this helps. 8)
Welcome to the Forestry Forum.
I've been to Roxboro a few times. Nice place. I used to have to go down that way to buy cheese at Gentry's store. Never checked out the barbecue around there but I bet there's at least one top notch barbecue place.
Was the store on NC 49 not far from Va?
It's on 501, about halfway between Roxboro and the VA line. Just an old country store, but for some reason they were widely (?) known to carry really good wheel cheese. It did seem like really good cheese, but maybe that was because it was supposed to be. :D
My father was from Halifax (Alton) and knew the Gentry fellow that owned the store. We used to go on a little road trip down to Halifax once in a while and it was just a thing to go down there and buy some cheese. There were some good old fellas that hung around the store solving the worlds' problems. It was an activity I'm glad I got to do with my dad before he passed.
Well, looking on google

it seems to be called Pine State General Store now and has had a big makeover. Looks like it's become a tourist attraction. It was much more authentic when I was there last.
Welcome sir. Great bunch of folks here and a wealth of knowledge.
Btulloh I'm about 6 miles from SP's store. A man that worked for him took it over after Mr Gentry passed but it's still about the same. The older generation that "hungout" there are all gone to except for a couple. People don't appreciate things like that anymore. Inside looks about the same but the "new guy" put board and batten on the store front. I spent right much time there when I was in high school and working second shift at Fiberboard. We used to get all our garden seed from there to. He always had what we needed and was nice to talk to. Ain't no more stores like that around here anymore. Times change for better or worse! :-\
You're not far from me and even closer to xlogger. Welcome!
Bob
Nice to see that store is still doing well. Looks like it's in good hands.
Welcome fellow NCarolinian. Lots of good info here...stay tuned.
