Title: Stihl 039 No Bar Oil
Post by: Rhodemont on March 30, 2019, 06:39:48 AM
Have a 039 my elderly neighbor gave me long time ago because he had hard time starting it.  I do find it tough to start but it has been running and cutting great once it gets going.  Last week bar went dry and started to heat.  Had plenty of bar oil.  I took bar and chain off, blew off all saw dustg which was kinda dry when usually oiled up.  put a fine wire in the oil outlet hole to make sure no debris.  Did get a little drip of oil come out so figure that was the issue.  Ran it yesterday, it was still dry.  Where do I go from here?

Probably the nylon worm gear is worn. It has the "spring" with Z shaped rod that fits in sprocket notch. Possible that spring is loose on nylon gear and not turning gear. Take sprocket off and see if spring turns gear. Gotta pull clutch for further inspection. Easy to replace gear after clutch off.

Will do.  Feel like a surgeon going in.
