Looks like it's going to be Badlands/Black Hills/Yellowstone/Grand Tetons/Bear Tooth pass and where ever else we have time for.
I will get the bike to Rapid City and pick up Sue Ann at the airport the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. She'll be riding with me for 14 days then drop her back off at the airport.
We'll be staging out of Deadwood/Hill City then Cody, Red Lodge, [maybe West Yellowstone] and of course Jackson Hole. Grab a place in those towns and ride the area a few days then move on.
We were going to do this trip last year but she got sick and had to use some PTO so we rode the Blue Ridge Parkway and surrounding areas instead.
Getting a GoPro Hero 7 for my birthday so I hope to record the trip.
Any suggestions?

Sounds like a good time. I'm not going but the guy next door is.
I'm just going to close the mill down and take NH bike week off. ;)
That sounds like fun. Wow, 20+ years since I've seen the Honda meltdown :D
Devils Tower, Thermopolis, trying to remember other fun stops. Pasties at the little store across the road from the mine in Lead.
My wife and I were fortunate to be in the Badlands at twilight on a full moon. Many photographers were out there as it was quite a show. If timing works out for you , I sure do recommend seeing that, Good riding!
Aside from all the great riding and scenery, I'm looking forward to the Cody firearms museum https://centerofthewest.org/explore/firearms/
Supposed to be the biggest and best in the land with over 7000 on display.
There's also a firearms experience where you can shoot everything from a Colt .45 to a Gatling gun. Sue Ann's looking forward to that.
Cody Firearms Experience ? From Flintlock to Full Auto (https://codyfirearmsexperience.com/)
They have a rodeo every day and since I've never been to one that's on my list.
I've been to Sturgis a few times during the rally and am looking forward to seeing the area without half a million other bikes getting in my way.
Ellmoe, That would sure be a beautiful sight! Hopefully everything lines up for us that way.
Don, I haven't seen a Honda meltdown for about the same time. There used to be one locally but they quit doing it as the last time they had a pile of them and set the fire with a jet drag car which in turn started a pretty big brush fire. :D

We were there several years ago. I was a donor when the museum was built and have a belt buckle that allows me free admission.

This 1990 engraving was adapted from a gold pocket watch which was presented to Buffalo Bill Cody by the Prince of Wales in 1880. We saw the actual watch when we visited the museum.
One day is not enough time and you still will not see it all. :o

I'm thinking we will be in Cody at least 4 days. Couple days seeing the Cody sights and a couple going into east Yellowstone.
Have you ever been on the Bear Tooth Highway?
Beartooth Highway - YouTube (https://youtu.be/78HnNT689ac)
I'm envious!
While in Jackson Hole I recommend having dinner at the Gun Barrel restaurant.
I had an elk steak and buffalo ribs, wow! Was that good.

Yes, across the Bear Tooth and down to Red Lodge is an awesome drive. I enjoyed watching your video.
Our planned trip for this year will be a bit further North.....to Hyder, AK.
Bear Tooth Pass is a must see as mentioned, also don't miss the Needles Highway in South Dakota, I think it's Highway 87.

I've been on Needles HWY before and you are right it's a Bikers must do. We plan on spending a few days in that area before heading west to Yellowstone.

We looked at the moon phases. Looks like it will be full the last 2 days of our trip so here's hoping it's a clear night!
Speaking of moons. Last Saturdays full moon was beautiful. We took the bike down to the beach and watched it over the gulf water.
Plus one on the Cody Firearms museum. There is more to see than firearms so plan on spending a day there.
Bill, I am looking forward to your photos and videos. Be safe!
9 days and a wake up!
Woot!
It feels strange to be watching from this side of the screen.
Jon
Someday we'll meet up on the road and ride my friend!!
Now is the hard part. Keeping Sue Ann to one saddle bag worth of clothes. She went to pack over the weekend. When I looked at her stuff laid out on the bed and I mean the whole bed I knew it was on. :D
Listen, a spare pair of jeans, couple shirts, spare skivvies, flip flops, socks, hair and tooth brush.
I'm packed.
Not 4 jeans, 4 dresses, 5 pr shoes, 6 tops, blow dryer, cuddle clothes, 5 gallons of make up, sweaters, 2 jackets, her favorite whoopee and a lighted mirror. And let's not forget the ol, well we will have to get dressed up a couple nights for a nice dinner so we have to pack for that too..
No we don't.
This is a motorcycle trip.
None of that stuff. >:(
One, Saddle, bag.
She's :'( :'( :'(
Gotta get yourself a small trailer, RB.
A side car? ;D
I've got a bike trailer I used to use when bike trip camping. We will be staying in motels on this one so as I told SA we won't be needing it.
Another thing is she's a travel agent, very methodical and organized so every nights stop is planned and reserved. Me I'm a seat of the pants road tripper. I stop n go when and where ever the road takes me.
8 days and a wake up!
Bill, hit the Beartooth highway if you can. You won't regret it. If you stay in Red Lodge, hit the Carbon County Steakhouse and the Bear Creek Saloon for a beverage and the pig races...
Beartooth is number 1 on my list of places to ride. Been dreaming about it for years.
I'm trying to get her to change out 1 night in Cody for a night in Red Lodge or West Yellowstone.
:) :) :) :) :)
I am a great proponent of seat of the pants bike trips.
Figure out a destination or at least a direction and run till ya need to stop.
The bear tooth is on my list too!

Great minds think alike!
Bill if you make it to Deerlodge Montana go to the old Montana stste penn and see the old cars thy have a bunch of them there
I'm thinking about seeing Glacier Nat'l Park, if so that's about on the way from red Lodge.
We went through glacier national park in 2016.
It is a beautiful area, can be a bit trafficky.
As far as the glaciers go they are almost gone from the park.
Jon
I leave at 7am tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)
May da snow in da passes hold off for ya. ;) Bikes and snow are a bad combination. :o
I guess bill is just about to let the clutch out.
Good luck my friend, wish I were there.
Jon
He's rollin'.
He's probably at Ihop right now.
I'm in Sturgis SD!!
8)
You are a bit late for the 79th. ;D
That was one heck of a hop from Tenn to Sturgis!
Red Lodge, Montana for the night.
Rode over the Big Horn range today. Beautiful!
Tomorrow Bear Tooth Pass.
Bear tooth pass and chief Joseph highway today with side rides up to Cooke city. Spending the next few days in Cody, wy.
Are you shipping luggage from one hotel to the next?
;D
Another great ride on the books! South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho.
Taking a page from Weekend Sawyers book I shipped the bike so the actual riding started and ended in Rapid City.
We rode 14 days, 2300 miles staging out of Deadwood, Red Lodge, Cody and Jackson Hole for multiple days of local riding. Spent single nights in Thermopopolis Wy, and Custer SD.
First week was t-shirts. Second week was Chilly! The last big ride across Wyoming was Cold rain, real windy and snow flurries up on the higher elevations. We stopped for gas and the gas station attendant asked me where I was headed and what route. When I told him over the range he advised me to turn around as the pass was going to be closed for snow. We took his advise adding a couple hours to the trip but that night sure enough it was on the news that they had closed the pass.
What a beautiful country we have!.

Congrats on a successful and eye filling trip!! Thanks for sharing a small part of the adventure with us. :)
I love travel pics. I need to hit the road. 8)
You found the big spud!
Nice pictures!!
That last picture is a snowplow that was made from a track. They welded a quick connect off a bobcat on it.
Talking to the owner he says the snow there is light and fluffy so it works well. Where I'm from originally in central NY the snow is wet and heavy due to lake effect and probably wouldn't work well.
Saw several real cowboys. Most all of them wore a straight bladed knife in a back handed draw sheath. Anyone know why? I've never seen that before.
The picture of that old Harley Shovelhead all wire tied together was sort of a funny story. We saw the bike broke down on the side of the interstate in the middle of BFE. Of course we stopped. Oil was pretty much just pouring out of the motor as there was a big puddle underneath I figured he's blown the motor, nope He'd run out of gas. Owner had just got out of prison and was riding to his first job since. We were just getting ready to go find him some when the other bike pulled over. That guy had suitcases strapped to just about everywhere he could on his bike as you can see. He asked need anything? We said some gas. He had a 2 gallon jug full in one of the suitcases. What's the chance of that?
Anyway, his story was he had lost his house and everything he owned was on that bike. He was just riding the country camping off back roads and had been doing it for 8 months so far.
Offered us some fresh caught cutthroat trout which I declined and off he went.
Our favorite town we visited was Red Lodge Montana. Sue Ann described it as where the Hippys and the Cowboys live. Least favorite was Jackson, Wyoming. Expensive and snooty although the Tetons were beautiful!
The Firearms museum in Cody was amazing!
Beartooth Pass, Chief Joseph Hwy, Big Horn and Wind River range, Themopolpolis and Snake river gorge were our favorite rides although the were all good except the long cold ride back across Wyoming in the rain and snow.
Yellowstone was sort of a let down as there seemed to be more dead trees than live ones. Ranger said it was due to pine bore beetles.
There was a pretty good sized forest fire outside Cody that caused a lot of smoke in the area.
I love walleye but can't get it here in Florida. Turns out it's South Dakotas stae fish so I ate a bunch of it!

Great looking places you visited, love the pictures! When I saw the broken down bike I wondered whose it was, figured not yours. Pack mule was what came to mind when I saw the bike with all the luggage strapped to it.
Thanks for sharing! Glad the trip was a safe one. Oh, the food looks fantastic!
The back handed draw is probably to avoid the knife getting in the way of the seatbelt buckle. Not all cowboys ride horses these days and most of them are in a pickup with lots of driving. I know my knife gets to digging in my side after a few hours bouncing in the truck if its on my right. I might have to switch and try that backhand method out. A fixed blade can be drawn and used while the other hand is busy hanging on to something. No need to let go to open a folder. Plus a fixed is just stronger than any folder. Mostly I carry a leatherman in my leg tool pocket. A bandanna stuffed alongside keeps it there.
That knife sheath is called 'horizontal side' carry. If you're on a horse, you don't want to be trying to wrench a knife out of your jean pockets, and a vertical sheath banging into your leg or saddle.
It's just more comfortable.
I figured it was something to do with horses. I was thinking it was so they could wear chaps. That guy in the picture had 2 saddled in a trailer and was wearing spurs. He and his buddy looked like they'd just come from the range.
Funny we did see a lot of "pick up" cowboys but we also saw a cattle drive with all the cowboys on horseback. Can't see them in this picture but these guys were herding at least 200-300 head

Thanks for the stories. ;D
I'm glad you enjoyed Red Lodge. The Beartooth hwy can be unpredictable, but it is amazing weather permitting. The Beartooth and Going to the Sun in Glacier are my two favorite rides in MT.
That's also a very good picture of Crazy Horse Mountain. They finally have a recognizable face now.
The food looks wonderful. My favorite would be the side of baked beans. Those beans need a wedge of my cornbread and some 'reverse roll quartersawn' raw onions.

I'm a bean eater.. The baked or BBQ beans we had were different than what we are used to. Different spices and style of cooking. All good though as I ate my share, just ask Sue Ann.lol

You guys have some great riding! Here in Florida we ride year round but it's all flat and boring.
