I've seen a bear in person, and bear tracks in the sawdust. Never would have expected to see a bobcat.
I had a red fox try to take one of my chickens right next to the sawmill yesterday. Trap is set tonight.

I had an old doe with a fawn come bed down about 30 yards from me last summer one day while I was sawing.
I like the color of that bear, I'm pretty sure I'd invite him over for dinner 😁

I see a lot of tracks around here too. Unfortunately, most of them are from critters that are similar to that orange one in the last pic. When's hunting season for them?

Nice pics! I wouldn't want to meet up with the bobcat unarmed! I don't trust cats, We had a house cat that would let me pet it for a while then maul my hand. I developed trust issues!
I also keep a few game cams around my sawmill yard. The yard is about three miles from the house, so it's nice to know what sort of traffic we get. Fortunately the people around here are pretty good and we don't lose anything (pretty small place - everyone knows everyone...). We have had house cats, dogs, raccoons, lynx (no bobcats here), bears, moose, people, marten, flying squirrels, and the neighbours from about 1/2 mile away, who walk in for exercise and check our place for us regularly .... great people!!
I have one really good camera (Reconix) that I use when I absolutely have to get a picture and it gets placed with a Python lock cable. Then I have four more cheapos that I buy when they go on sale in pairs. The Reconix was $700 or $800, but the cheapos I buy on sale for less then $75 each (Canadian dollars). The cheap ones last a couple of years in the bush.
Game cams also double as theft/vandal insurance!
Lost 14 chickens Friday night due to a raccoon my coops like fort Knox but when you forget to plug fence in whoops. Set a bunch of traps and got him next night. I've had bobcat,fishers,Fox and bears on trail cam around house and coop
I'd like to see a fisher on my camera. I've seen them in the wild a couple of times.
Trapping buddy years back got a Fisher in a leaning pole set with a 220 conibear. Got the cat out of the trap and flipped it into his pack basket. Maybe 5 minutes later I see claws and eyes looking back at me as the black head pokes above the rim, I had enough composure to point and make some strange noises as Dave managed to dump both arms out of the pack and levitate about 10' away with one step. The basket hit the snow and the cat shot out like a rocket. Tough does not describe them.
Anything in the weasel family is just plain mean.
This is the front lobby today at the school where my aunt is the secretary.
Mind you, bears are just beginning to be a thing around here. We've had increased sightings over the last 3 or 4 years. This one was tranquilized and released in rural jefferson county. Guess where I live.

He just wantd to be smarter than your average bear.
No pictures -- all seen "in person" this month.
- 3 Black bears (mom & 2 cubs).
- 2 White tail deer.
- 1 Raven (a regular).
- 2 Pileated woodpeckers (a couple).
- 1 Tom turkey (another regular).
- 1 Norwegian Elkhound (yet another regular :D).
I haven't felt the need for a camera system. My neighbour's living room faces directly at my mill. Anyone spends any time near the mill, I'll get a phone call. (And the hitch for the mill is locked in my basement, anyway).

Funny you mention the average bear. There is campground called Jellystone Park right down the road from the school. The joke was that he was being taken back there after he was tranquilized.

My younger brother got the name boo boo as a child and is still Uncle Boo at age 54, Yogi and boo boo too
After reviewing some of the night time photos, I've found a raccoon, a gray blob with glowing eyes, :D and several more small bears. Never knew sawmills were a wildlife destination.
The bears are really pushing things around here these days. They are carrying bags of grain away for snacking purposes in the middle of the day. I actually see a bear about every three weeks, and get game cam shots almost weekly.

We get all kinds of wildlife, but the funniest is the talking border collie. He howls the entire time I saw, begging me to throw sticks. He's a bit ticked off these days cause the mill's so clean and tidy there aren't many sticks anymore to throw him.

I have been seeing a lot of these this year around my mill and around the lumber stacks.
He's after the mice so keep the foodstuffs away from the mill and garbage picked up. Mice traps help too. A barnyard cat can keep things a bit better off too. Black racers are welcome, copperheads are the only bad snakes I have to worry about in N VA.
The pics of the bobcats are awesome. Wish we had more here.

They do seem to like lumber stacks , and log piles , too. When the swamps fill with water they move to the " hill " (i.e. the mill ). We kill several each year , about half get away.

Yes I know him very very well, grew up in Wilmington NC and canoed every blackwater river in SE NC. The highest number of cottonmouths I've ever seen is brackish swamps on the sound side of the outerbanks. Holy cow, everywhere. Kept me in the canoe.

I'm worried that there are going to be a lot of bears shot for becoming a nuisance. They are more and more brazen all the time.
I have not yet seen a bear this year but there was a calling card on the sidewalk across the street this morning. They are getting quite brazen, once habituated they have to be put down as relocating doesn't seem to work. The animal rights people get wound up though.
At least no 2 legged ones.
Most of the bears spotted in this area are/were nuisance bears that were live-trapped in New Jersey and released in the Catskills and the Adirondacks!
Now they're nuisance bears here because they don't show much fear of humans!
Bear hunting was outlawed in NJ several years ago!
I keep imagine the bears wandering around the stickered lumber thinking " wonder if I could use these air dried boards to build a hibernation hut or if I need kiln dried...maybe I could ask that human there with the saw...or maybe he looks tasty..decisions decisions"

In Ks you can kill an animal if it is destroying property, even out of hunting season. farmers can get permits for deer destroying crops, and open season on coyotes. Sadly if the bear has gotten food he may need to be destroyed. "a fed bear is a dead bear" stated at Philmont so boys understand to keep food put away.

but do you have to leave the lay, or call the warden so they can recover the meat and donate it to a church or needy family? in tx, that is the what is required if you have to kill an animal, especially a game animal, leave it lay, or contact them so they collect and donate.
when i was stationed in ks, my roommate was able to get land owner tags for their property in scandia and we took our fare share. i tagged out on my own license, 1 buck and 6 doe, then we started on the land owner tags. deer were even coming onto their land, rummaging around the silos for food, especially in the winter. we killed 14 that year. sad part is, he has hunted his whole life and didn't know how to skin a deer. i skinned 1 on the ground, in the snow while 2 of them worked on 1 hanging and i still had to finish it up and we skinned the next 4. well, i skinned the next 4 while they smoked and joked.
you can get permits in advance, or shoot in a crisis moment then in theory call it in. they keep lists but often you can choose to keep it or donate it. in the country I am sure many never get called in.

snake, spider vs locust, squirrel gathering acorns.
60 miles north of NYC, 2019: bears, bald eagles, bobcat, fisher and the deer walk the streets of town. Coyotes howl to the fire siren. No moose yet but they have been close.
