Is this black locusts?
Right up the road from my house.
In the original settlement area.

I think you're right.  If you can get a twig there should be about 1/8 to 1/4" thorns in pairs.

Can't see the leaves, but the shape sure looks like it. Should have had white sweet smelling flowers a few weeks ago.

I think so too.  The leaves should be pinnate compound.
