I'm buying logs from someone nearby who is building a lake and pushing over a lot of trees. I picked out cherry, hickory, walnut and what I thought was a hackberry from afar. When I cut it today I realized it is not hackberry. I'm thinking it is butternut. I've never known what butternut looked like. I hope I'm right and it is butternut. I'll take some pictures the next time I'm out there. Unfortunately most of the leaves are either gone or very shriveled up and dried out. There's a cherry tree that forks at about 9' high, but below that is a log that's about 24" diameter. I'm excited about that one.
The cherry tree fork if you could saw it such that the blade is centered for all 3 ends and it has no bark inclusions would be a delight for some bowl turners. Trying to find a bowl turner that would be willing to pay for it, now that is something else. Don't ask me how I know!

Yeah,it would be nice to find a bowl turner.
I've never seen a butternut in the wild, but easily 1/2 of people who think they have butternut, do not! Tons of turners in St. Louis. http://turnedtreasuresllc.com/wstl2/about-us/contact-us/ (http://turnedtreasuresllc.com/wstl2/)
This should help with the identity;

The 2 photos I sent are Butternut. Someday, maybe I'll figure out how to send a post with 1 photo.
Thanks KEC, that's one pic for each eye to look at.
Ok, I went back to visit the logs I'm getting. This is definitely not butternut. I think it's hackberry like I originally thought.

Looks like Hackberry to me.
It is hackberry-esque. Looks a bit like sweetgum, too.
The wood is all the same color. No noticeable heartwood. Very white.
I have seen some BIG hackberry that lost the warty look like the bottom of that log has.
Hackberry for sure if pure white.
Well, then I will hope for this to get spalted while it sits in my log pile.
