Title: Husqvarna x-cut chain and roller guide.
Post by: Allar on October 20, 2019, 01:47:47 PM
Hey,

I've been looking for a new chain for a while now and decided to ditch Oregon and go with a Husqvarna X-cut for .325.
What caught my eye is that there seems to be new roller guide just for x-cut chains.

So the question is, will i be able to sharpen with a basic .325 husqvarna roller guide?
Like what's the difference between new and old style roller guide.

I don't know how the roller guide works, but if the angle's fixed, that could be the difference. From their site...

Optimal cutting angle
A saw chain's cutting angle is critical. The tighter the angle, the higher the sharpness – however, if you overdo it, the cutter will lose sharpness and break. With the X-Cut® chain, Husqvarna has found the perfect angle.

I'm definitely interested in hearing what you think of it, especially compared to Stihl.

I've tried one of the now not so new X-Cut .325 chains ( it came on my 550 mark 2) and as it's a semi chisel I was pretty impressed with it. It digs in very well and not so much slower than full chisel. When I run out of the Oregon I have I'll most likely go for the X-Cut. Now the C 85 3/8 is a very good chain, the first chain I've used out of the box that cut well with out touching it if you can get it give it a try you won't be disappointed.

Well it's not really fixed angle but if you keep the file paralel with the sides of the gauge it'll give you 30 degree angle.
I checked the package of the x-cut chain and the sharpening angle on it is also 30 degree.. so i don't know ..

Outinthewood yeah i watched your videos of 550xp mark II, seemed to cut nicely. I was kinda hesitant of it being semi chisel but i have only heard good things about it, cant wait to try it out :)
Once i get myself bigger saw i'll give the C 85 a try.

Thanks guys.

I have been following this hoping somebody would find a link or diagram that shows the new tooth profile completely. If the side plate angle is the same at 30°, and they say you need a different roller guide, then I am guessing that it's the top plate angle that has changed, or is it the drop angle (normally 10°)?
I sure would love to find out if anybody knows.

Not sure why Husqvarna makes such a secret out of it  >:(

Attached some pictures if anyone interested.

Edit: the down angle along the tooth seems to be around 6 degrees.
