The guy i got this log from says it's ash, but it is not heavy at all even soaking wet and very soft.
It smells kinda like mud.
Any Ideas what this is?

Thats Cherry or Alder very nice
Awsome wood to work with my favorite! Gets darker and more beautiful with age
Thanks
Cherry smells sweet, not ever muddy. Did you end up with it being alder?
It is blackgum or tupelo.
I didn't think it could have been cherry. Because it didn't have even a hint of red color.
Does alder grow in south Louisiana?
No. Tupelo and blackgum does, though :).
Don't think it is Alder as alder here in the NW is smooth like birch or poplar.
The bark and the wood look like blackgum to me.
It is blackgum or tupelo :) :) :).
Thanks Danny
Cherry turns darker and red with ageing it gets darker every year!
Type louder Danny!
I vote blackgum, tupelo I don't see in KY or my native KS.
But there is a scad of tupelo in Louisiana.
