It is getting to that time of year for the sawmill project. This years event will be held on April 17th and 18th.
Friday will be a advanced kiln drying class taught by Dr. Gene. If we can get Stan the Man down here again we'll have him go over some kiln construction and maintenance. Saturday will be some more sawing. I haven't decided exactly what type yet but figured we can possibly touch on a few different things. Keep in mind one of the ways this project gets funded is for WDH to be able to take the lumber and market it. I have the new WM Slabmizer in, that can also be shown. We can still do the quarter sawing if that is what y'all want, I just figured that we have rode that one far enough.
Address.
1607 Capps Browning Rd.
Rentz, GA. 31075
There is lots of motels in Dublin at the intersection of Interstate 16 and US HWY 441 that is about 6 miles from my place.
Looking forward to see those of you that can make it.
Count me in Captain
It would be cool to see that slab miser working on a big slab.
If I could walk better, i would been in.
It's on my bucket list.
We should keep a head count going. I make 1
I hate being #2 behind you Jake.
You can keep #2...I will take spot 3
Been waiting anxiously for this post Jake.
Im going to have foot surgery but should be recovered in time to get there.
If that fellow Blaine from Loooziana doesn't come with his lemon bourbon Linda and i will bring it.
Maybe bring it anyway.
John and I should be 6 and 7 if I can drag him away from his travel baseball coaching obligation. I look forward to this event every year and I appreciate Jake for hosting it and all of the knowledgeable folks for showing up and sharing what they know. In 28 years of working for the school board I have taken off less than 20 days including funerals, illnesses and the birth of three daughters but I gladly take off work to attend the project.
Pete, I am glad to read they you and Linda plan to attend. I remember that you were going to retire from this when you turned 70 and 10. Maybe Magicman will be able to make it this year.
Looking forward to all the jokes from the guy from Alberta.
Plus all thee other 'regulars' that attend.
Heck, I might even catch one of WDH's tree walkabouts and learn a few of the local species from an expert!
Jake's hospitality is second to none.
Teea and I make 7 and 8.
I really wish I could go, but I will be 2 months too late getting home for retirement. Maybe next year. Have fun!
Doc Emily and I will be coming this year. We will be 9 and 10.
Looking forward to it!
1200 miles one way for me so I'm thinking I'm not getting there. Would love to do the trip and meet all you good folk but maybe next year

Well the dates are a month before I am eligible to retire and probably 2 months before I am retired, so not this year for me either but I want to go. Maybe next year you can drive to my place (right off the NYS Thruway) and we can drive down together? I need to meet these guys too, and I so enjoyed your posts from last winter that a dozen hours of driving might allow time to ask all my questions and hear your stories.
I put on my calendar. Count me as 11.
Georgia and I make 12 & 13. looking forward to it. barring work issues. thanks Jake.
Doc, if you show up you can expect Jake to put you to work.
my wife is a pretty good worker! 8) 8) 8) :D :D :D
We're going to finally get to one of these. 2 or 3 people. On the calendar and scheduling around it right now.
As usual, I'll be there. I guess that makes me either 16 or 17, depending on Nativewolf's input.
A week either way and I could make it but I have certification class that weekend in West Palm.
I forgot to add my wife is coming to meet the people I talk about also. #18?
Jake. that means you have to be nice to her, she's nice, not like me. :D
I have plans to make it this year. now that i know the date i can make my motel
plans. Count me in. #19

Yes I am. She's a very friendly civilized lady from Maine and I'm a backwoods hick from sticks in Alberta.
@K-Guy (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=35658) should we assume she is attractive and smart too?!!! :o :o :D :D :D

Martha and I make 27 and 28.
We will bring the Barbecue.
I just checked 19hr one way
It's got me thinking :D
Some how we jumped from 19 to 25. I think we are at 23 now.
It's because @K-Guy (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=35658) forgot to apply the exchange rate. :D
Vick and i are in . We have been to all of them . It is my favorite road trip of the year.
Al, you and Vick are two of the reasons I do not want to miss. Bruno, point it south and come on. You will not regret it.
I'm #26
Jake, I'm going to try to make this one. I'm looking forward to learning from you, Gene and Stan, as well as the myriad of other FF members who attend.
As far as a demonstration, how about rift sawing? Thanks to Robert (Yellowhammer) sharing his reverse roll quartersawing method as well as your demonstrations of same, we've been well trained in maximizing the yield of high fleck wide QS boards.
However, the market seems strong for wide rift boards (30 to 60 degree orientation of growth rings to face of boards), and they can bring a premium price (similar to QS).
I heard years ago that someone in Indiana had figured out a method to produce higher yield wide rift boards by sectioning a log into thick rift blanks and then resawing them, but I never learned the method.
Might be a good project to bounce some ideas on or seek input.

Wow 2 weeks ago I had to land at McRae airport because of bad weather and spend the night on the couch. If I would have known you were 20mi north maybe I could have slept on a better couch lol. Count me in.

BTW, any of youse guys who are on the fence or haven't been to one of Customsawyer's projects, it's worth the drive. Great people, great food, and lots of cool toys to watch in action.
Ditto on what Yellowhammer has said, well worth the drive, even for us foreigners!

Yeah, y'know, what I'm hearing right now, is that Wagner symphony called "Flight of the Valkyries".

Dang, David, that is the most you have posted in months. It will be good to see you and Kirk again. You must be busy since your retirement.
VIP. Kirk is the only man in SC that I have ever helped stack a board off a sawmill.
Glad y'all are coming.
I haven't seen any sawing ideas yet for Saturday so I thought I would throw some out.
1) Sawing beams/post. Different techniques on sawing a post and how to get them square as possible. Examples would be 8x8 post for a timber framer or 6x6 post for a customer building a barn. I researched the forum today and that topic came up quite a bit.
2) Sawing for grade on logs. Picking the best face on a log and the best strategy to get the highest grade possible.
3) Another idea on Friday after the Kiln Class have a small meeting on the business side. Whats working for some and whats not working/advertising/web sites etc.
4)Another idea is just put @YellowHammer (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=11488) is some form of painful mid evil torture device and have him tell us all his sawing/drying/marketing secrets.
I vote for option 4 but make it after he hooks us up with his barbecue.

stan welch — 52
Jeff — 53

GAB, I really appreciate your comments, and I'm always grateful and recognize when people have my back. I really respect and thank you for that. That's an all too rare thing these days. You da man.
The good news is that 123Maxbars and I have been good friends for awhile, and I know he was just joking about my somewhat protective business philosophy where I generally adopt the Jack Daniels "mums the word" approach to disclosing our techniques and secrets. If anybody ever goes on a Jack Daniels tour you'll hear them say, "Behind that door is our mash room, we don't show that to people, it's our secret." I do much the same to my local competition. Its just good business sense.
However, with Forum members it's different, and I don't hesitate to show folks what we do, how we do it, or otherwise help others, either when they come here to visit, like GAB and others have, or when we go to see them at Customsawyer's project. Jake has led by example and has set the gold standard for helping us all learn new things at his projects, and I certainly will try to do the same.
If people want, I can talk and answer questions on our business and marketing strategies, or other "special" techniques we use to process and sell our wood.

re #4: I say you bring a 16' 30" walnut and let a newbie saw it at 3/4" thickness and deadstack it right in front of him....in the sun, no wax on the ends, then restack with 1 4x4 sticker every 8 ' and at least 3' from the ends (1 sticker per layer for those having trouble following). When sawing tilt the large end up another 1', so the boards are have as much pith and sapwood as possible...every board should have some pith. He'll start crying and give in before you get halfway the restack :D. Hey if you are going to torture the man do it right- be merciless.
I appreciate the compliment YH. Danny and I were talking yesterday about this project. It started out just a few of us friends that lived fairly close to this same area getting together and sharing ideas. We were all in different markets, so no competition to each other. So all were willing to share. That same thing has held true through all of the projects. I can't take credit for it, it"s just the way it has turned out. I wouldn't have it any other way. Most that come for the first time always come up to me and share how amazed they are at the openness of everyone. Men and women both.
As to the sawing demo. I'm leaning towards sawing some walnut and showing the importance of minimal sap wood. Also have some curly maple that I need to saw some 4/4, 6/4 and 9/4 out of.

Robert:
Thanks for the reply.
I have a suggestion for you and that is to take lots and lots of pictures and notes enough so that if ever you were incapacited for some reason or another that you could write books with lots of pictures and diagrams to inform and instruct the future woodworkers and lumber generators of the world.
Please do not get me wrong: I do not wish that on you or anyone else.
However, an ACE, or two, in your back pocket is always a good thing for a fall back position in life.
I sure would like to attend this year, but it does not look good.
Concerning a sawing project:
How about sawing a 12' long octogonal porch post that has 12" across the bottom flats and 6" across the top flats.
I would definitely start with a low value log for the first one.

Sounds like somebody forgot to lower a rear toeboard. :D
There should be shock collar on a off bearer when I leave a toeboard up. :D
Would that be considered self - flagellation for those of us who saw alone most of the time? :D
Count DblTreeBelgians in. This will be a first for us. 8)

Quote from: customsawyer on January 26, 2020, 08:16:48 AM. . . . As to the sawing demo. I'm leaning towards sawing some walnut and showing the importance of minimal sap wood. Also have some curly maple that I need to saw some 4/4, 6/4 and 9/4 out of.
@customsawyer (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1861) Jake, look at all the "likes" on that reply!
(I only hit the button six times. :D )
As to the walnut, it seems the project has all the experts attending, on milling to optimize the value of the lumber. Yellowhammer and Doc Wengert could also tell us about kiln drying, with and without steaming. Steaming will change sapwood to the same colour as the heartwood, right? . . . but does it change the nature of the sapwood so that it's not considered a defect?
There seems to be two markets for dried walnut; steamed and not steamed.
I'll bet a lot of people would be interested in the pros and cons.
Besides, selling a bunch of "highly valuable walnut" should help out in cost recovery for The Project.
I particularly like the Walnut idea ;D.
Steaming walnut can be included as an advanced topic for sure. I will bring handouts to cover the topics requested, so let me know what "advanced topics" you would like to hear about. Looks like I am #58...ooops, Jake remembered for me already, so I am #2.
I have downsized to a 24' motor home (class C) with solar cells if I cannot plug in.
One possible sawing suggestion is how to saw a smaller log, maybe 12-14" quickly to avoid making it a non-profit log.
I also agree it would be great opportunity to cover sawing for very flat grade lumber (sawing for crook instead of bow) as opposed to sawing for framing lumber (sawing for bow instead of crook). Proper cant rotation, identification of the stress, staying out of the pith, etc. Walnut or cherry logs would work great for that.
For that matter, sawing for "edge" walnut or sapwood face walnut, one of our better sellers.
If people desire, I could take a little time to demonstrate a few of our special sticker stacking techniques that we have adopted which greatly reduce stack bow and sympathetic warp, and even our live edge slab sticking techniques to produce flatter slabs.
SOLAR DRYING...if there is interest by a few people, we can have an informal "Cracker Barrel" discussion (questions, answers, sharing) about solar drying when there is a break or open time, maybe during Friday's lunch we could sit together, or before dinner.

Da Yoopers in, Chet makes 59
@chet (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=134) is that you?
Haven't seen you since the PigRoast of 2015!

Yup, lookin' forward ta warm weather, green grass, and a cold Bud with good friends.
Gene, I would be interested in talking about solar drying

I know it would be more electronics, however I feel there needs to be 2 idiot lights on the control panel that are lit if the toeboard rollers are not all the way down. It would not be totally idiot proof but it might reduce the number of long wedges.

Okay - count me and tentatively Becky in for the shindig -

Weather permitting I can try to plan on bringing enough catfish to feed the multitude Friday night if anyone is interested. I'll bring my fish cooker but if anyone else has one they can bring we can speed the cooking up. Somebody else (Danny?) will have to cook the hushpuppies if anybody wants them.

Count me in.

I would love to be a part of this project but alas I am just too far away! You guys and gals will have a lot of fun I am sure.
Gen and I would love to make the trip and meet you all, but it will not work this year. We've made a promise to ourselves that next year we will be there. Everyone enjoy!
This is too close to home. Count me in. 63 I believe. What is the start time on Friday?
Quote from: APope on February 03, 2020, 08:50:40 PMWhat is the start time on Friday?
I don't know exactly, but probably before the grits get cold.
First time trip. Count me and one more in (#64 & #65, I think).
I will make #66 and looking forward to another great time!
Approximately what are the hours of activity on Friday and Saturday? It will help me decide as well as a friend.
Until someone says differently, I am planning to start "rubbing elbows" about 7:45 to 8AM. The more formal program might be around 8:30AM Friday. Bring your own chair if possible and maybe safety equipment too.
Last year We managed to get a few specials...Sawmill and Woodlot magazines, a Delmhorst moisture meter, and 50 cans of Anchorseal. Plus, one member ran off the drying handouts for the drying session and gave them out for free. We also had Stan, YellowHammer and a few others share some really good info. Then there was the excellent food. Then, There was the music. Friday afternoon followed the same pattern. And Saturday too.
Last year I brought about 50 chairs and will do the same this year.
Looks like I'm going to be able to make it. I believe I'm #66.
Also if you guys decide one of the topics is walnut steaming, let me know if I can help in anyway. I'll happily share what little I know. :)
To paraphrase Chief Broady from Jaws "Jake - you're gonna need a bigger building" :D
If there's still room, I'll be there - #67 I think?

It is with great sadness that I need to withdraw my name from the attendee list. I really enjoyed last years project. Gene's (and K-Man's) discussion on drying as always was great and Yellow Hammers sycamore sawing techniques were awesome. But for me the best thing was the socializing with all of the other FF members that were there. I had a really great time and was looking forward to being there again.
Anyone that has been following my Facebook feed should know that the wife and I are deep into a major renovation of our 1875 plantation house. We have been doing most of the work ourselves and initially worked at it on a fairly casual pace taking time off to do things that we enjoy. Our original plan for this year was for an extended trip with the camper to Alaska. However, after some deep thoughts I came to the conclusion that if we didn't get the house finished first, we would never get it finished. So I proposed we delay our Alaska trip until next year and commit to being completely finished with the house by the end of this year. As of today we have 4 rooms (2 upstairs & 2 downstairs) nearly completely stripped to the studs that still need some structural repairs, electric, plumbing for 2 bathrooms, insulation, drywall and all the finishing stuff like paint, flooring and trim. Then, when those are done we have two more rooms that need the same, with less structural issues anticipated.
On top of all of this, we have a 2nd house about an hour and half from us that our son has been renting. He has decided its time for him to buy his own place and we are expecting him to move out early spring. Since we have no desire to become landlords and rent the place to anyone else, we will be doing some renovation and repairs to get it ready to sell. Because of the travel distance this will probably take at least 6 weeks out of the remodeling time on our place here.
Both the wife and I will be at the Logging Expo in Richmond ( https://www.vfpa.net/expo-2020 ) the 1st weekend in May and hope to catch up with some FF member there. We'll be hanging out at the Logrite booth.
The count is now back down to 74
Hello Everyone,
I am new to this forum My name is Ronnie Parrish I am from Baytown TX just east of Houston TX. My main business is furniture restoration and woodworking. I have a logmaster sawmill and have been working on setting up a older nyle kiln in doing so I have had many conversations with Stan at Nyle trying to get all of the kinks worked out of the kiln. Stan is who recommended I check out the group and the sawing project 2020 it sounds very interesting if it is okay I would like to attend
Can anyone recommend a close hotel to stay at?
At the junction of Interstate 16 and Hwy 441 in Dublin, GA, there are a number of them there. About 6 miles from Jake's place.
Ken and Laura from Michigan make 75 &76?
Big difference in room prices in Dublin. Recommendations?
We stayed at the Days Inn by Wyndham last year. We have stayed in them other places and they were fine. I definitely would not stay there again or recommend it to anyone.
We stayed at the Quality Inn.
It was good, and met the price point.
The "Super Ocho" was good too.
LaQuinta was okay but it was a lot cheaper last year.
we often stay at the holiday inn express places, and so I stayed there, but not worth the price based on the limited time spent there, with all the goings on at Jake's.
Prices do vary. See below:

We're set up to stay at the Holiday Inn Express in Dublin. We've always had good service there so we'll see how it plays out. After looking at the link RT put up in previous post the prices vary quite a bit.

There's a Hampton Inn beside La Quinta that I didn't see on the list. Don't know their rates.
I booked a room at La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Dublin.
I hope you have room for two more
John and Daphne Fayetteville Ga
I have booked my room at Motel 6 and all set to go.

Camp on Customsawyer's place. You might want to ask him first.
Normally have enough room for some campers. With the ground as wet as it is right now we might struggle with getting stuck a few times but there's something around here that can pull you out. :D

Me too.
Im wavering now due to my very slow recovery from my foot surgery as well as the covid 19 scare.
Also I dont look forward to the 2 day drive.
Jake, My wife Georgia are planning to bring a camper. we are fine to camp nearby if that ends up working better. but it would be nice to be able to walk home, or one of us hit the hay earlier if needed. ;) thanks.
Thank You.That is a great offer. We will plan on camping there unless the ground is too bad. I have a 4wd but I don't want to mess up your yard and I know ya'll do a lot of work to put this thing together.
John
I am hesitating to throw my name in just yet.
My builder is going to let me know which 2 weeks in April or May were going to work on my house and of course my job still takes me away much more than I want to. The life of a traveling technician used to be fun, now It's just a job.
so If those 2 things don't interfere my brother Chirs and I will be put putting down to atleast stop in for lunch on Saturday.
That's a definate maybe if I ever saw one.
Jon
Strategizing about chairs. Don't want to fly with one. Last time picked one up at Walmart and left it with my daughter in Atlanta on the way back. If I get another one can I leave it with you Jake?
yes, I got one (camo) at a nearby Walmart, and left it there. we will bring more as well.
I like chairs. As to messing up my yard not a worry. I've made plenty of ruts recently and won't notice a couple more.
This might be a perfect opportunity for those who have chair making skills to bring a few samples to share their designs and techniques...

Due to a scheduling conflict that has came up, I'm going ta hafta bow out. :( Dat brings da count back down ta 81.
Just so we can get a count and I can try to plan on where I'm going to stick everyone. How many are bringing campers?
I'm bringing my 30' class C MH
STAN
I am planning to bring a trailer. however this am, I was going over the April schedule with my assistant director and I am the third person wanting that week off. I will keep you posted. we had planned a week off to drive both ways and enjoy the get together. so might change to flying and a motel. worst scenario is that we cannot come this year. we are checking with a few back up folks.
I am I have a 17ft TT
We will be in a 24' travel trailer.
I'm not going to make it this time.
We will be putting a roof on my house.
Sorry to miss it but I'm pretty happy about the roof, kindof important.
Jon
Unfortunately Dr's appointments and my sons school means that my wife can't make it. She was looking forward to meeting you guys. Jake buy more beer. :D ;D
You did that intentionally didn't you Stan... :D
If I get a load down there I will stop in. Sure would be nice to meet faces that go with names. ???
Here is the handout from @GeneWengert-WoodDoc (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=20498) . it is next to the paper clip below, title: saw project 2020
you can print your own, and or bring it on a laptop or tablet. If not able to do that, will be able to have some printed on hand at the project. Thanks Doc Wengert for putting this together.
We have a small camper van !
Looks like I'm late to the party! I'll be there. Brendon Missildine. Highland Home, Al
Doc Henderson thanks for posting Gene Wengert's handout.
Another week and a half til I can put weight on my foot and will be wearing a boot after that for I dont know how long.
Have to bow out this year.
Hope all have a great time.
Thanks for the link Doc. Sorry for those that health requires yall to miss. I will be staying at home now. Please remove me from the attendance list. My family does not support my traveling at this time due to health concerns
I am more in than out. the schedule is complete for April and I am off... barring staff illness or overwhelming status events in our community.
there have been 66 down loads of the handout from Dr. Wengert. as the date approaches, let us know if you need a printed copy/are unable to download, print, and bring it with you. it is on my reply around 170. my count is often off from others, I think because I view posts in reverse order. we do not want to waste paper and ink if everyone is able to print and bring there own.
I can bring my copy and a couple more if some one needs one.

Thanks for the offer. Barney 67 has already volunteered.
I hope toilet paper does not become an issue at the project. Anyone local grow corn?
Stack the cobs in the right order - 3 red ones then a white one. They have to be arranged that way. ;)
Besides Jake may be far enough south to have Spanish Moss. (Anybody have any major issues with redbugs? :D)
The wheat should be in the boot stage by then, still soft, leafy and tall enough to prevent poke through.... :D
Any sawing, minimum board length 6 ft. Helps keep the social distance.
I had the 3.2 flu when i was younger, never had the Corona virus ...yet.
Here's how the army does it
How to use just one square of toilet paper. - YouTube (https://youtu.be/dKsFUiS8QPM)
Right.
Good thing he winked at the end, otherwise I might have thought that was a bona fide Army Training video!
It might be time to raid that stash of fast food napkins in the glove box in your truck......
Add one of these any you won't need any TP!

A local hillbilly came home and told his family he went to visit friends and when he used their bathroom he found they had a toilet brush. He told his folks "It worked pretty good but I still prefer paper."
Don't worry. He will have plenty of planer shavings.
Mr Danny,
Wouldn't syp and heart pine shavings kind work like pinesol or gum turps :D
I think i first heard and was shown the toilet paper one in 1956

Unfortunate circumstances will prevent us from attending, but I can loan Jake this unit. ::)
I've got several trees I like to sit at when deer hunting and get tired of a blind. Now I know what I'm going to add to improve the comfort. And convenience. Probably need to put some camo paint on them though. :D
Good pic MM. inspirational.
could add some camo shoulder straps, and make it a porta poddy, and just take it with you when you hunt. be careful when you flush. :)
The CDC is advising that for the next 8 weeks group events of 50+ should be cancelled or postponed according to the coronavirus.gov website.
With that in mind, Doc Emily and I will not be traveling to the Sawing Project this year. We will be carrying on our normal activities and regular routine at home with a few modifications to our eating out and entertainment activities.
My prayers for health for all and for strength as this situation progresses.
@customsawyer (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1861) what is your thinking at this point? I am holding off until june 1st to make a decision on the pigroast, unless it becomes clear before then the path to take. That is the day I typicall start an rsvp topic and order the hog and porta potties
My personal line in the sand for my final decision on coming to the project is april first, unless of course situations dictate a decision before that.
I personally find it both heartwarming and encouraging to see the degree of concern displayed here for fellow forumites by our fearless leader and senior members ,setting a great example of forethought and caution.
I actually was talking about this yesterday with some other members. I'll make a decision on April 1st. I just want to give a little time to see how things progress before I start knee jerking.

Uh Jake, you might want to announce the decision on April 2nd..... Just saying....
I just said when I would make the decision not when I would announce it. :D
You must just be lying awake just thinking about it!!! :D :D :D I hope things calm down in time, but we all understand and support what ever decision is made!
As I am older than most on here and have a secondary condition, it is likely that I will decide not to come. Final decision on April 1.
I think that lemon bourbon stuff would cure most things, and keep us safe! :o :o :o :)
That was tasty.
Had to be some of the best "stuff" that I have ever tasted. @Julio with that delicious chicken is on the same high ground.
The backwoods 'clear' in Manitoba is good, but that lemon elixir was exemplary . . in other words, reallyy good!
Teea and I regret to say that we won't be able to make it to the Project this year. We just put her parents on one of the last direct Westjet flights to Winnipeg on Thursday. About a month and a half early. We're packed up and heading to el Norte before our medical insurance gets cancelled and before the border to Canada gets slammed shut even tighter than it already is.
Enjoy the Project my friends, catch you next year, and do your best to stay healthy in these crazy times.
I sure would have like to attend the show but we have been informed that our country is under quarantine. I sure hope every one on the FF is ok
and we can get over this soon. My Granddaughter is out of school till the 24 of April so looks like home school it will be.

Driving 1000 miles each way, we try to combine something like visiting family with the Sawing Project trip. Jillane's family in NC have some immuno-compromised concerns, so that part of the trip was postponed. Personally, I tick off three of the 'increased risk' boxes so we have decided to stay home this time.
This afternoon it was announced that the 6 county KC Metro area has been placed under orders to close all non-essential businesses effective Tuesday morning. They say that order will be in effect for "at least 30 days". Looks like I'll have plenty of time to sharpen blades and work on other projects. :(
Stay well Tom, and everyone else. At least you can take orders and saw ahead a bit. I would not be afraid to stand in a driveway and talk with someone. set me in a restaurant for an hour, not so much. Of course that is what we do at work, hang out for 12 hours and parade random ill strangers in front of us. :) You do what you need to do, and we will see at the next one.
It will be a bit of a hassle, I have been scheduling jobs out to 4/14, we were leaving on the 15th. Now I've got 2 days before the closure order, and it is supposed to rain most of tomorrow.
Linda started a batch of lemon bourbon as soon as we got home last year.
a month to go to bottle it and we are looking forward to tasting it.
Had planned to bring it along to the SP but alas it was not to be.
Maybe some other folks made some too
Can someone point me to a recipe for Lemon Bourbon ?
Well guys, I guess I get to see you all somewhere else. Maybe this thing will be dead soon so we can still have a pigroast. The governor just laid a 3 week stay at home mandate on Michigan. I've canceled my rooms as there is just no way for this to work out for me now.
Stay safe everyone.
I also will not be coming to Georgia this April. As Jeff posted we are on a "stay home" order until at least April 14. Us old guys are in the high risk group.
Time to fire up the Woodmizer!
That scheduling conflict dat kept me from coming, has now been cancelled by this same stay at home order. :(
Lemon Bourbon
Use a gallon glass jar.
Stuff it with as many meyer lemons as will fit to the bottom of the neck.
Fill with sugar to top of lemons.
Pour bourbon to the top of the sugar and lemons.
Screw cap on.
Put on shelf (we had some leak so putting it in a shallow pan may be a good idea).
Every month turn up side down and back right side up (do not shake).
Put back on shelf.
After a year remove lemons.
The lemon bourbon we brought last year was not so good right after we bottled it.
At the sawing project 2019 it had been bottled about 4 months.
Do NOT cut or puncture the lemons
The lemons that one removes from the bourbon are excellent to eat.
Ontario has shut everyone down until April 6. Mandatory stay at home all buisness's shut down.
Only Essential Buisness allowed to run
I was thinking of coming, but not now.
Maybe in the fall?

Could someone give me some assistance and enlightenment on this elixir.
What is a meyer lemon?
How do you prepare the lemons?
Do you remove the rind?
Do you cut them in chunks or slice them like an onion? If sliced how thick?
Can one use maple syrup instead of sugar?
Can one use a half gallon mason jar and make a smaller batch?
Does the cap need to be on tight or loose enough to allow air movement as temps change?
Does it need to be kept in the dark or on a shelf that gets sun light?
Many threads here eventually get to food this one made it all the way to an after dinner palate teaser.
Gerald
Last year there was a member at the project that started insisting on having the recipe details. Last I see of him, and I think I should forget what I know, were heal drag marks from near where he had been insisting, down into the swamp below Jake's Mill.
@GAB (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=18738) why on earth would you want to make less than a gallon? :o ;) :) :D
In TN the Gov has now closed schools through the end of April. Due to my wife's work schedule and that new announcement I will regrettable have to cancel my trip this year. The GA Sawing Project has turned into my yearly get away weekend with the boys to put it one way. I am very disappointed that I will not be able to make the trip this year and film the event for others that cant not attend.
I had considered in protest of this China Virus to take all my clothes that said made in China and burn them with my slabs but after taking inventory I probably wouldn't have anything left to wear.

DOC:
Never having tried this concoction I would not want to end up with a lot of something I did not care for.
I would not want to squander good bourbon.
If I didn't like it, it would be something else for my wife to bring up every so often should I try other experiments in the future.
I like to minimize my losses whenever I can.

One that would require eye bleach after watching! No offense intended to 123maxbars but but that's not the sawmilling video I want to see! :D :D
Nathan,
Please don't do it. I am still trying to clear my memory of the suggestion from Lynn about him walking into WalMart wearing a mask and gloves only to find the rest of the customers had on their street clothes too. There is a limit to how much a person can purge from their mind. I don't think I could take 2 such traumas so close together. :D
Our gallon jar leaked when we inverted it so used 2- 1/2 gallon canning jars.
This was after we had made the gallon recipe.
Meyer lemons are usually available in the produce section and are put in whole.
The governor of NC just announced a statewide "stay at home" order that will last 30 days, so it looks like I'm not going to be able to attend.
Bummer....
Don't think this is going away by the middle of next month so I'm officially canceling the project.
I hate it had to be cancelled. I know that Jake's county has laid down the law about limiting gatherings to 10 people. Jake, we appreciate what you do to put on these Projects over the years. Looking forward to the next one.
Jake,
Thanks for all the effort expended on this effort. Sorry it can't continue at this time but we all understand. I'll leave the catfish in the lake on the hoof to grow a little longer so they will be fresh for the next time.
I too am very appreciative of Jake and others for the work it takes to put something like this together. Emily and I both were excited about the opportunity to meet in person and to the sharing of expertise by the more experienced here.
I hate that the sawing project had to be cancelled. I appreciate the effort from Jake, Gene, Danny, Robert, and Everyone else in putting this together.
We will get some lemon bourbon going in hopes that we can have another sawing project.
Jake, I also appreciate the efforts you and others involved with this Sawing Project have put in to organize this event and I hate that it had to be cancelled. :embarassed:
But under the circumstances, I fully understand. Hoping everyone stays safe and healthy!
I was looking forward to the project but was just about to pull the plug on coming down. Thank you Jake and everyone involved for all the great effort in planning this get together. Hopefully all this chaos will settle down soon and we all can get together at a later date.
Everyone please stay safe.
Brent and Jill
DblTreeBelgians
I'm sorry to hear this
Hopefully you might be able to do one in the fall.
Very wise move to cancel. The effects of this virus are expected to surge in the coming weeks. Strange world right now.
Jake, canceling the project is the prudent thing to do. I attended my first one several years ago and I look forward to it each year. The knowledge that is shared freely, the fellowship with friends who have the same maladies (sawdust toxicity and other similar disorders), the food, and the opportunity to learn from the best in the business from all over this continent are some of the reasons I look forward to attending each year (Usually, the only day I take off of work for the whole year is the Friday of the project-I have about 270 sick days saved).
The virus is getting cranked up here and not all of the folks who likely have it are being tested. This morning Hillsborough County (Tampa) and Orange County (0rlando) both had 174 cases each. By 11 a.m., Hillsborough was well above 200. Let's try to stay safe and hopefully we can all make it to the next project.
I appreciate all of the effort that you put in to host this annual event.
Kyle
I agree, next year we can talk about the covid 19/20 virus that prevented us from coming. we all are willing to sacrifice to come there, but we have to be safe and not endanger the older and chronically ill. I was looking forward to being a second year attendee, but if half of everyone could not come, I can wait a year. Put us down for next year and save us a spot for a 41 foot trailer. close to where ever the lemon bourbon stuff is!! thanks Jake. @customsawyer (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1861)
Yes, it's a good decision. Good call.
Completely agree it's the right call. I will miss getting away and visiting with friends, but will very much look forward to the next gathering.
I thinks this the best choice. Looking forward to the next one. I hope everyone is well and stays safe.
Life goes on. WDH and Customsawyer will probably RRQS a huge sycamore. At least, I hope they do.
@customsawyer (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1861)
I'll miss seeing everyone but at least my eyes will spared looking at you ugly mug, Jake. :D
Any thoughts on rescheduling in the fall?
I'm having thoughts all the time. :D
At this time I haven't been thinking about a fall version. The last time we had one in the fall we almost killed some northern folk with our warmer climate in the south. Not sure I could deal with that level of whining again. :D
Life is what it is. Good call. There's always another opportunity.
Danny and Jake come north and give you demo's on my mill in the fall.
The weather is great.
Jake you could ride your bike in the mountains.
It's great riding in the fall :D
No bugs or humidity.
level of whinning from us northerners, :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
