Title: Still milling!
Post by: JoeyLowe on May 22, 2002, 11:29:27 AM
 8)  Just thought I would stop by and say hi again.  The past few weeks have been real busy.  Word got out that I had a stash of oak logs and seems like everyone wants lumber.  I've been milling from sun up to sundown for awhile now.  Anyhow, hope everyone is fine.

Yep, Joey, everybody seems to be doing ok.  The biggest complaint has been the weather and there's not much we can do about that. :D

Finished the oak order yesterday.  Man oh man those boards got heavy.  Thank goodness for the new forklift.  It was like having 4 "dependable" laborers.  This order was something else too.  It ran my father-in-law back to Mississippi, and two helpers I had hired, quit after two days.  It's finished now.  My arms are a little stronger and my back is a little sore, but I did it.

Oh I forgot.  I put the logger hunting on the back burner for a couple of weeks.  While filling the oak order, I discussed the need for larger oaks with the landowner that was supplying the original oaks.  He took me to other side of his property and told me to take whatever I needed.  Those were some huge oaks. I felled three trees that averaged 24" in diameter six feet off the ground.  Was able to buck two 12' logs from each tree and then skidded them up to the mill myself.  By the time I got back to milling I realized that offbearing was the easy part.

I've just about got a new solar kiln built and a shed for the mill.  Things are looking bright if I can just maintain my health.

Joey, how about some pics of that solar kiln?  I want to build one, someday, and would be interested in your design, and how it works out for you. :P

Yea I'm with DanG, I'd like to see some pics too.  Also there's no mention of the two sons, have they found jobs in an ice cream parlor yet or are they hanging in there with the mill with their old man sawyer ?

Hey Guys:

Gimme a couple of days to get the pics together.  I took several during the construction of this kiln.  As for the sons, school let out yesterday and yes those aren't smiles on their faces.  However, I did teach them to operate the forklift this past weekend, so they have been tooling around the yard on it.  Won't let them use it to pick anything up with though, but I will let them load it with slabs and cut lumber. ;D ;D

BTW, found a small market for my slabs.  There is a charcoal company that uses them locally to make charcoal.
