Title: steak and an "old fashioned"
Post by: doc henderson on July 12, 2020, 07:15:33 AM
Had to make dinner the other night, as my wife worked late.  put some chicken on the smoker that had sat for a day in buttermilk, and a couple aged steaks.  I was also in charge of having a drink ready when she got home.

I kept trying the steak till one was almost gone.

We had a friend show us how to make a variation of an old fashioned, with burnt sugar syrup, and smoked.

Such a shame that you have to labor a hot stove.  No rest for the weary.

I see Old Fashions are making a comeback. I remember the old people used to drink them when I was a kid.

Last bourbon I drank was at Tom's funeral.

A proper cook needs to sample the goods to be sure things are cooked to standards. I am a Crown guy myself; but glad bourbon is so popular...some of my staves probably aged that Woodford.

The ole fashion is my favorite drink.  Never had one like that, but Beam& coke over crushed ice is quicker to make.  Banjo

I am more of a double IPA guy, so I had a taste, and then had a beer.  it was for my wife.  she read about the drink that goes back over 200 years, prob. even before @Magicman (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=10011) was born.   :) :) :)

As I remember that bottle was Tom's that had been left at DanG's house.

Doc,

Whats the recipe for that old fashioned? I'm a bourbon Manhattan guy, but that looks great! My dog in my avatar turned 11 on Thursday so we smoked some ribeyes to celebrate, he was happy!

2 jiggers bourbon (should be one that you like the taste of if sipping it), 1 jigger simple syrup or the burnt sugar syrup.  a few drops of bitters to taste.  ice and some add a teaspoon of water.  good ice.  then put into a smoker with apple wood, or wood of choice.  we make it on ice in a shaker, then pour it over ice in a glass.  garnish with what ever, but cherries or olives is common.  lots to pick from on the internet.  good luck.  I bet your dog loved the ribeye! :) .  this comes from a speakeasy style restaurant from KC.  The W.

It would be great.  there is a maple walnut tincture and some recipes that include maple syrup as the syrup.  google .

Had to give up the bourbon years ago, used up my quota. No more brown for me, switched to the clear stuff. Those steaks look delicious
