Title: Chainsaw milling with a stihl 038 av super
Post by: Jerryok1971 on December 28, 2020, 09:59:23 AM
Hello all. I was wondering if I could use my 038 for milling a 32 inch white pine log into slabs I want to use for chair seats? I am considering
Ordering a 24 or 28 inch bar and a chainsaw mill to use. My sister lost some big pines in a storm that I dropped for her but have no way of getting them to my uncles Norwood mill. Any advice on brand of sawmill to purchase or if my stihl can handle the job. Thanks Gerry

I have a 038 magnum with a 36" bar. It struggles with a full bar in fresh oak cutting normally. I'm sure cutting pine would be easier but it would probably take a while and struggle. Make sure you have a skip tooth milling chain and if you aren't constantly doing it it should be doable. I use a granberg mill and it's not as rigid as the custom one I had made but it works.

Thanks offrink appriciate the advice.
I don't plan on doing a lot of milling with the 038 super just thought it would be a shame not to use those pine logs. There straight and looks like they are knot free for 25'. I also was thinking on bucking it up in 4' lengths to make it a shorter cut as I am looking to make chair seats and don't need longer lumber lengths. As far as mill for sale is granberg the way to go? Just wondering as to your user name are you a hockey player missing the rink closures due to COVID?

Granbergs are one of a few but I could get one from the local stihl dealer so that's the way I went. Our weather has been way to warm for anything on outdoor rinks this year. Hopefully it some smooth ice gets made on the local lake!

Yes what is this world coming to if it's to warm in December for outdoor rinks or lakes to no frozen in Michigan! Hope you get some ice soon!

Yep it'll do it but I doubt you'll want to do it again, Ive done it with my 038 mag and it drove me to build a band mill so do be careful haha. Probably do 6-8ft per tank maybe, I'm not sure what pine will go like, maybe more. Go slightly on the richer side and keep your chain sharp. And post photos   ;D

Lots of bar oil too.

So is the goal to get the material or is it to say you milled the material yourself?  Either is fine.  It's just the end goal should dictate the process in my view.

So hiring a portable mill would satisfy the need to get the material without the expense of an additional bar and chains and chainsaw mill.
The work involved would be less as well.

But I know sometimes we want to say, "I did that myself". I do on certain things too.

You may find a day of portable sawmill time will produce all you need for similar money.

That is going to be a serious workout for that saw, I'd be beating the bushes for a trailer.

I've got an alaskan mill and its not much fun to use for big logs.  Now I use something like this fellows methods https://youtu.be/8qz64ELkxdA  The saw cutting at an angle cuts so much better than perpendicular straight down the log like.  Be careful and hold onto the saw with thumb wrapped around the hand as you can get some kickback when you are starting out.

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions guys. SawyerTed I say it's a bit of both those things. Hadn't thought of hiring someone with a portable mill. I only have one log to saw out but with that one log I will have enough material to keep me supplied for a while.

It might be the last log your 038 cuts.  95cc is barely enough imo.  Go easy on it.

I'm confused. Your log is 32" in diameter and you are only going to use a 24/28 inch bar? That just ain't gonna get it.
You will lose about 6 inches of bar length in a Granberg mill. Thus you can only cut 22 inch slabs with a 28 inch bar. That will give you a few slabs off of each side, but you are going to end up with as very thick plinth left over.
But yeah, I wouldn't go over 28 inch bar on that saw and you will probably need an auxiliary oiler to keep from burning it up.

Like you,I'm fairly new to sawing logs, started less then a year ago. Long story short I  spent close to 4k on 2 saws, one a 880 magnum, bars, chains, jigs and chain sharpener all to cut 8 logs. A lot of trial and error and sweat. We did get quite a bit of nice lumber, but had to work pretty hard. Now I'm in the process of setting up a wood-mizer bandsaw so I don't have to work that hard

Yep, luckily I have 20 plus acres of mature hardwoods and seeing how I recently retired early the wife has some woodworking projects for me so a happy wife.......
So lessen learned is at least for me I would have got the sawmill first unless I was only going to cut a couple of logs, then I would have paid someone

Chainsaw Mill. Cutting a 2X6 with the Haddon lumbermaker. - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydLCp4s0LJc)

Here I am cutting pine with a 041. You could cut the slabs with a lumber maker like this..
038 are a 60cc class saw, it will do it but it will take a while.
Get a long enough bar and a Granberg ripping chain, I found they cut well.
