Title: PlexCore vs plywood floor in enclosed trailer?
Post by: gspren on February 17, 2021, 06:41:28 PM
I've been looking at enclosed trailers for hauling my trike and other miscellaneous stuff. Some trailers have a 3/4" plywood floor while some have a floor that looks like OSB but smoother. The salesman says the PlexCore is more water resistant than the plywood and they even have a small chunk of it in a jar of water with the date last spring that they put it in. I know there are some other brands of it but what do you think, would a salesman lie to me :D, or is it as great as he says?

I've got a Featherlite all aluminum enclosed trailer and it has the OSB you are referring to and I painted with a polyurethane paint and sealant on all seams before I painted. It's held up very well

gspren what did you end up doing on your enclosed trailer. I sold my all aluminum enclosed Featherlite a few years ago and it was a really good one. The new ones appear to use the same OSB as the older ones.

I got one with the flex-core floor and so far I'm happy!

What size did you get?
I've got a 6x12 and it's pretty tight getting the trike in.

Years ago when I drove flatbed I hauled OSB out of one of the plants down south, for a camping trailer factory in Indiana. They had the factory custom make 24' long sheets, so they could run the whole length of the trailer floor.

I know what you mean. My last Featherlite was a 6 x 14 and it served extremely well. I hauled a Kubota diesel zero turn, Polaris General to you name it. The 6' height was a issue sometimes

Featherlite is the official trailer of NASCAR. Going to pick this up this week it's not a million dollar hauler but it's expensive. My last 1610 Featherlite all aluminum was a dream to pull and use but didn't think I needed it when I got my gooseneck Diamond C. Wrong! Enclosed are way to handy. The new one will be 14' that's inside length without the V nose included. And the height is 7' which will be a game changer.  I thought about the 16' length but decided against it because I didn't want to long and the last 14' was really never a issue.

I'll take some pictures when I pick it up. The first thing I will do when I get it will be caulk all seams and paint the inside and put a piece of heavy flat commercial piece of carpet down and put aluminum airline track in front rear and back. That's exactly what I did on the last one I had for years.  The wood flooring and sides are all like 1/2 or 5/8

It's a 6x12 and yes a mite tight but doable. I can't remember brand right now but I compared a few and this one had a little bigger door opening, I didn't want bigger as I was towing with the FJ Cruiser and now a 4Runner.

It was suggested that I put pool noodles on the cables when using the trailer for the trike.
Those cables come pretty close to the fenders and it's surprisingly hard to back it out straight.

My 6x12 enclosed trailer is a WellsCargo, ramp door opening is a bit over 65 1/2". Some of the 6' wide trailers had ramp doors from 58"-63", most things might not matter but our trikes are just under 5' so it does matter.

I knew they used a special liner that's a weather proof liner under the wood. My old Featherlite never had one leak from the top or the bottom after years.

Is this just another name for Advantech subfloor?

If anybody is looking for a enclosed trailer or any of their all aluminum trailers hopefully some of the information helps.

The advantage floor is 3/4 inch and the dealer I got it from says it's there proprietary blend. Featherlite is across the road from them in the small town of Cresco Iowa about 370 miles from me. He said he's seen all kinds of interesting specialty trailers to million dollar trailers over at their factory.

If anybody drives limestone rock roads they know they are a war zone. That's just the way it is. Not a sandblast but a nasty extreme blast. You can see the fenders and picture of the side aluminum what it should look like. Tried to tape over till my rock tamers came but even after that it's just war on the country roads

The Featherlite is a workhorse. Got things the way I like them inside fully painted, silicone in various places and airline track put in. Need more stainless hardware. Didn't order enough. This track is the heavy duty version and I ordered in six ft strips and custom cut and smooth up the ends. Can be put on sidewalls up above and anywhere. I love using the heavy commercial carpet that gets left in. The ash entry board works awesome and amazingly with a few strips of Velcro on the end and aluminum lip it never comes off. It is absolutely amazing what and how much you can move on wheels by hand with smooth transitions. Basically the same setup I had in my old one
