Coming out with a hitch, phone rings...
You have a saw with you ?
Yeah...
Get in your truck, someone's pinned...
I got to load the Firewood King on a backboard, basket, place him on an Argo 120+yds from the road today behind a 650J, SCREAMING.... his left lower leg was going floppy floppy... im glad he will be ok but he isn't pushing in a clutch pedal for a while. Guys think the Logger rescue class is a joke, it gets real here very quickly.

Not a good thing to hear, but glad he will be ok.
The hard reality of logging can happen to any of us any day. Glad he will be ok good on you for helping a fellow logger.
ya I can remember coming out with a hitch and seeing the landing man waving his 1 arm , he slipped and ended up under a fairly big hemlock and it broke both his legs , the would of been 35 years ago,
Im just glad i had the honor of picking him up in the woods, 6 months ago he was going to knock my teeth out 🤷♂️... Everyone heard it come over and questioned if it was him or me, only working 3 miles apart.
Time to crack a few cool ones with him and tell him the gas pedal is going to the floor now and your going to take his throne while he's down 😂
There was a gentlemen killed here last weekend cutting wood. He was no stranger to the woods, taken by a widow maker in a hardwood tree.

Are you in Nova Scotia ? Blue noser? I never heard of this. Sorry if it mentions your location, I can't see it on mobile.
Ah man Barge, that ain't good. This is one of the reasons I was pushing for that class (thanks for hosting it) because I know it's not a matter of "if", it's a matter of "when".
Very glad a guy like you was there with the skills to help him. Stuff like that can take a toll on a man, are you doing OK? I'll be curious to hear the details of the extrication when I see you.
What is the closest Level II trauma center they have to you, Cooperstown? Did they fly him, that bill alone will leave a nasty scar.
If you want to talk or anything, you have my number.
Strong Work, good on ya!
Lot of deaths/accidents in the last year. Be careful out there.
lifetime logger was killed over here last year. limb to the head.
I am happy to hear you were close by and have the skills to help him. 8) I worked with heli loggers for five years, too many guys I knew were hurt or killed.
I had a log roll off the log deck and pinch me between it and the logs I was unhooking. Luckily the cutter was in the landing and within earshot, otherwise I'd have been there for about 2 hours. Got a fused joint in my toe and had to do the wedding on crutches.

I didn't have the pleasure of cutting him out, his hired guy did it right before we got there and better it was him. Tom honestly you couldn't have picked a better scenario, rough ground but somewhat accessible. Everyone did exactly what had to be done, wasn't far off from the class, he went to Albany via bus but the helicopter was about there, unfortunately it landed across from the store today for another local person. He's home and has surgery next week, i guess rods and plates ? One of the buyers from the mill he works for asked another logger last night if i carried his crown out for him.

Oh the wolves are already on it, 😆 had another local guy call me up today scheming. He feeds a processor 1 town over who works relatively cheap, hasn't impacted me but hurt a few smaller guys and they would LOVE to help him out right now. The king and I are family, kind of grew up together so I'm morally / politically conflicted just how far I want to go.
Exactly. Someday he might return the favor and be there for you 🤷♂️
Well I wouldn't want to pick any scenario, but sounds like a textbook job, I hope the guy that cut him out has his wits about him and didn't do more damage. Assuming he had an ALS transport, at least he had some morphine on board to cut the screaming down.
That comment about carrying out his crown is kind of cruel, but pretty funny. ;D
It is what it is, sounds like the guy has the best help he could wish for and didn't have to wait hours to get found and helped. The injury as you describe it sounds like a tib/fib fracture. (below the knee?) Probably a lot of pins, but I can't see the x-rays from here. ;D If the knee is involved, it gets more complicated, same with the ankle, lotsa smaller bones. If you find out how it happened, please let me know when I see you. I collect this stuff just for my education.
Just as long as you are good, that's my concern. Again, nice job.

Fun to joke about the low road but the high road's the one to take.
Glad you got him out mostly in one piece. Speaking for myself, I know that when I've been injured, initially I am really embarrassed and I don't want anyone to see me. It must've been such a comfort for him to see you come in to assist in his hour of need😂😂
It happens quick. Got this from the step father in law. Felling a 6 inch dead ash. A branch it swiped in another dead tree came down when it was swiped. 9 stiches and cut his eye lid and it was just the tip end of the branch. No safety equipment. He's lucky. The other end was almost as big as the tree that dislodged it. Gene is 83.

Aw geez, that ain't good. I hope there is no lasting damage and he heals quick. Ash trees ain't giving nobody no breaks, you can't trust a single one.
I hope your FIL is feeling better soon; thank god he didn't lose his eye!
lucky hes still got that eye i reckon. glad it didnt get him in the obits.
Quote from: Jeff on May 11, 2021, 10:54:09 AMGene is 83.
at least he didn't get dinged up falling out of a
rocking chair.
He dont stop. This may slow him down.
Well you can buy him a hard hat, but I don't suppose you could make him wear it. I admire the old guys that have to work and can't sit around. I aspire to be one myself, but at some point they have to take on safer habits. I know I am being a lot more cautious with things that can kill me. I hope he can too, he has family to think about after all. Older fellas heal slower too. AT least I do. I wish him the best, but wear a hard hat man!
My dad never wore a hard hat or chaps or safety glasses when cutting wood. But never said a word when I did. ;D He grew up cutting wood on The Farm too. I did not suggest he should wear safety gear when cutting wood. I knew better. ;D
Yes. I listen to him on how he does things, but make no attempts to tell him how he should do something. Hell. He's made it to 83. He retired from traveling sears repair man. Yup, a maytag repair man. He was also a hot rodder and body man and has always burned wood. He's done a lot of things, and if you come to the pig roast and he gets your ear, he will tell you stories as long as you care to listen. I dearly miss Tammy's dad, but Gene has filled in adequately until we see Bob agIn one day.
Oh, I think he is healed up from droping his garden tractor on himself a few months ago when it slipped in the chainfalls he used to lift it to change a belt.
Ouch!!! :o
A story that comes to mind....
My Father was having cancer treatments. I went to pick him up. I went into his room and the Dr. was there to release him to go home. That went well until the nurse came in with a wheel chair. Had to use a wheel chair to get him to the front entrance, could not walk to it. Well my Father said, I don't need no DanG wheel chair and headed for the door!! Nurse stands there and said to me, "He can't do that", as he is walking away. I looked at her and said, you tell him that, I have to catch up with him. :D
:D That is funny!
