Title: Problem with Members' Map
Post by: Fraxinus on April 09, 2005, 08:56:34 AM
For some time now, I have been unable to get to the Members' Map on this site.  I click on it and it starts to load but only gets so far and freezes up.  Happens on computer here at home and also at work so I have an idea it's not just me.
Anyone else having a similar problem?

Same here. When it does eventually load, trees for the US map overlay the world map with members names.

it doesnt freeze, its because of the massive amount of information in one web page. It takes time for it to load.  if you hit your refresh button the trees will be in the right place.

Hmmmm, works fine up here in Canada :D but it does take a couple of extra seconds to upload( I have DSL so mebey thats whyn its faster).

One thing tho, I feel about as sharp as a marble right now. The first time I looked at the members map, I could see my tree up there by itself but in the eastern half of the US, it looks like a forest or a green beard :D. Anyhow, I just found out if you klik on the persons name(Alphabetically listed), their tree will flash red......very cool......howcome no one told me about this???? Just kidding(Refer to "sharp as a marble comment :D)

Hoooboy, I been upgraded to "Sharp as a marshmallow". I just found the "View"  thing at the top of the members map page and well , this is a great feature, makes the "green Beard" not so thick :D :D :D

I have to hit the 'refresh' button to get a 'second' shot at downloading all the trees in the right places. Took me awhile to figure out how to overcome the problem, but as Jeff said, it works good with a little 'refreshing'. Great to have the member map, and hope everyone will post their tree.

Fraxinus and Brad S,
May I ask how much RAM the computers that you are having trouble with have? Also, are they overloaded with programs?

I fully agree with Jeff about it being a large page to download.
What I'm finding on two of the computers I'm running, one being low on RAM and overloaded and connected to cable, and the other one newer, plenty of RAM and not yet overloaded but connected to dial up. The dial up tends to be two or three times faster then the other.

I'd also like to second Beenthere's comment. It is great to have the member map, and I too hope everyone will post their tree there as I use the map a lot myself.

I am on dialup, and have never had these problems. You all know I use Firefox, just had to slip that in there too. ;D I know big guy, you've had to make some concessions for us Firefox'ers ;)

Yup...  AND!!!  IF you then go click on their tree, it takes you to their profile..   Even COOLER!!!  :D

Oh, and I'm on Firefox too, and have never had a problem, always loads quickly.

How can ya NOT love Firefox!

hehe...  Sorry Jeff...  I didn't mean you!!!

I do understand, we have a similar problem on Somersoft (my other forum). Even though we are on VB software...

I meant the general populous.  :D

Thanks heaps for thinking of us when you do instigate changes, though!!!

I'm not entirely sure I could find the Internut Exploder button on my computer if I had to!

Swampy, your URL needs to have [url] at the beginning of it to match the url tag at the end :D

Furby,
I have 34 GB available out of 37.2 total as all I do on this computer is surf, so I haven't used too much. I have DSL and it still takes forever in the memebers map area, and once I hit the button, there is no turning back as it will not abort from trying. When I finally get the world map with the US trees overlaid, I hit refresh and the infamous "Page cannot be displayed" messege pops up.

Doesn't matter, really. If that's the biggest problem I encounter, I'll consider myself lucky. ;D Rest of the forum responds just fine and that's all that matters. Thanks, though. I can see you'll earn your keep! :D

Brad,

The 34G you have is most likely hard drive space not RAM. Check how much RAM you have (start->settings->system under windows). I have seen people with only 32 or 64M of RAM who installed a new hard drive to make things faster. It doesn't usually work that way. 256M of RAM is almost a minimum for windows to run well. I tend to be a power user so my machines have anywhere from 512M to 2G.

TNLogger,

BSD is not a Linux program or even a variant of Linux. Linux is based on work done by Linus Torvalds.  BSD is based on the Berkeley Standard Distribution. They do  share a common thread in that they both us many of the same tools/programs/executables, but at their core they are different. FYI, the free version of Red Hat is Fedora and I personally like SUSE Linux.

I have to agree Firefox is wonderful to use and thank you Jeff for supporting it.

Thanks tn,

I would dearly love to set up a computer with NO Microsoft stuff on it (that's not a Mac)...

I feel it can be done...  but...  don't think I'm up to the task. (not enough computer knowledge).

I hate the fact that you can't uninstall Explorer. It's almost impossible to get Messenger off your computer. I had to ban my staff from using it, and deleted it off all their computers. They were 'chatting' with their friends (and boyfriends) at work. Drove me nuts. Unfortunately they needed internet access on their computers to run some of the programmes we needed. In the end they were threatened with no internet access on their computers if I found them either chatting or downloading 'inappropriate content' again.  (That would have severely hampered their ease of working).

Asy,

If you want to try Linux out without installing it you can try one of the versions that run off a CD or DVD. They are not as fast since they have to load everything that is not in the cache from the disc, but they will give you an idea how things works. I would not be without my Knoppix CD. It has saved the day more than once!

Thanks Cary,

I'll look into it, but really the truth is Andrew (L-Plate) has to look at it coz it's his job to set the computers up, it's just my job to test how well he's done it and see if there are any glitches...  :D

Seriously, it's good to know there's an alternative.
