Title: What should I do with this log?
Post by: burdman_22 on June 21, 2021, 10:46:55 PM
I have the below cherry log that I dont want to throw away, but I dont know what it could be used for. It is "C" shaped, with one side completely gone and hollow inside. The missing section kinda winds around the log as you move down. Any ideas would be appreciated...seems like it could be used for something neat with enough imagination (I have none).

Chop it up into small pieces and sell it for smoker wood.

Cut "stumps" for a table base.  Put a glass top on them.  Use two with a long piece of glass.

@ljohnsaw (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=20640) Oh I like the idea of using them as table legs or something...is that what you meant? Haha, or night stand bases or something...

Btw, my wife and I were both stationed at Beale for a long time. I love northern California.

Glass across the opening.

Yeah I saw your post somewhere else, but I think my log is too small. Plus the opening spirals around the log so dont think it would work well for this. I think I'll save the log and use it for table legs or nightstand/end table bases.
Any advice from anyone on how best to store this log for both drying and preservation? I'm worried if I hang onto it for a year the bugs will go crazy in it.

Maybe a hand carved bowl candidate. Thing is, that it's as much about knowing how it could become something as it is imagination as the combo of know how and creativity is the trick.
Hard to say from one end but I see bowls or trays or maybe something more abstract. Cherry is very prone to  powderpost  thus the solubor comment above. That glass table thingy surely is very dry wood as glass and wet wood don't mix as OP posted.
I know cookies are a fetish wood right now (as are slabs) but as a woodworker cookies are the last if ever thing I think of to do with any piece of wood.
