Title: Tulip Poplar rot
Post by: Tinkerer on July 09, 2021, 09:07:39 PM
Anyone know what this is? Can it stay like this, be healed, or need to be removed?   I've attached pictures (I think!)

Trash.  Poplar rots fast so deal with it sooner than later.  Like before it lands on a structure or cannot be safely climbed if needed.  Might already be past that point

This tree is becoming hollow.  It could live a long time but won't heal.

Good tree to get rid of. The ivy doesn't help either. English ivy will eventually kill trees if allowed to grow unchecked.

Thank you all for your input! I keep the ivy at bay on all the trees (cut roots every couple years). If it goes over, it'll be tree dominoes in my neighbors backyard as well as our own. Could also hit his shed. It's settled- coming down. It's gonna be a fun job! TacoTodd, thank you. I'm gonna tell my wife that I am, indeed, funny. She doesn't think so

Yeah, when you have a hole like that, it's never going to heal over, just continue to rot out. Some trees are slow to rot, and new growth on the outside can keep up with the core rot for a long time.

But eventually it's going to be more rot than wood, and the tree falls over. "When" is the only question.
