Title: MD. Mourns the loss of Wye Oak
Post by: Gordon on June 10, 2002, 03:51:44 PM
Historic 460-year-old tree toppled.

When a branch was blown off the 460-year-old tree in 1953 it became gavels for state judges. Now state officals are pondering what to do after strong thunderstorms on Thursday turned the rest of the nations largest white oak into 200 tons of historic lumber.

Here is some more information on the THE QUIET GIANT (http://www.dnr.state.md.us/forests/trees/giant.html)

The trunk was 32 around at it's thickest point.

That was an impressive tree. It's kind of humbling to think of how many generations of man have passed since it was germinated.

It's good to see the Governor behind its continued preservation. Hopefully the clones are doing well as will future ones.

Maryland state forestry officials have declared a 102-foot white oak in Maryland's Harford County to be the new champion oak.

The Harford tree is a mere nine feet smaller in girth than the Wye Oak, and 36 feet narrower at the crown.
