Title: Smith Indian Fire pump - poly or galvanized?
Post by: DMcCoy on August 24, 2021, 08:18:44 AM
Poly won't dent but could melt.
Galvanized is UV resistant forever but could corrode.
Anybody with experience using either or both?
Thoughts?

Looking at when you would need it most I would say galvanized with annual inspection and plan on a replacement at some point.

Much better than the possible alternative.

I do have some past experience with them.  Your galvanized tank will corrode and rust out over time - lots of time. If drained when not in use, it will last much longer. Not really comfortable to wear, but then neither is fire "comfortable". Poly has a tad different design, wont rust. Best thing I liked about the Indian is the hand pump, compared to other brands. Worked well, shot a good stream.

I have only used galvanized, it will eventually corrode if not taken care of but normally will last for years. I would be concerned about accidently setting a poly tank down on a hot spot. ;D

Used both. If you are working on rough steep ground (climbing up or down) or running at all (OK jogging), the steel ones can be very rough on the back. The pumps are very good and rebuildable on the ones I had used. Poly is more forgiving to your back for sure. Poly also weighs almost nothing when empty.

Thanks for all the replies.  Neither is available right now, not that I expected them to be.
I like the idea of less weight on my back.
