This year, we are going
Behind the Forum (https://www.youtube.com/c/TheForestryForum?sub_confirmation=1) to look for clues to the key that will get you registered for this year's prize drawing. Guests are welcome and encouraged to play along, but to actually get registered for the drawing, you will need to be a registered Forestry Forum member to access the registration. ONCE YOU KNOW WHERE TO FIND IT! ;D ;D
Your Challenge: To take 18 clues, and match them to the correct 18 video titles out of a Playlist of 19 videos.
You will then take those titles to extract a keyphase, that you will use to complete a URL, that will take you to the registration form.
HERE IS YOUR PLAY LIST IN NO CERTAIN ORDER!!Forestry Forum Christmas Pick List - YouTube (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLoGRZrVEkkIHrfM5y_WScG-S4Ag5mtsEf)
Step one. Create the 18 letter code phrase you will need to get to the contest entry form. Below are your 18 clues in order. You must find the video title from the selections in the Behind the Forestry Forum youtube Christmas play list by using the clues below. Once you see the clue in a video, it will be apparent. Once you find the correct video title from the clue, collect the letter from the designated word in that title as directed. Put all your letters in order as listed below to create that 18 letter code phrase.
Preliminary check if your code phrase is correct. a=1, b=2, add up your 18 letters to check to see if you are at 206
You cannot be correct if your numbers do not add up to 206, however, you could still be wrong. Odds are, you are right. No sense even proceeding until your code phrase letters add up to 206. Keep trying!
Okay, once you have the correct code phrase, you can register for the drawing. Complete the URL by adding your code phrase after "action=" and copy and paste into web browser. If it is correct, you will know it. DO NOT USE ANY CAPS!!!

Tammy and I love to see the little notes that you also send us in the space provided on the form. :)
I think I need a spreadsheet for this one. and maybe a bigger brain. Holy cow! I am gonna need a day or two to figure out the instructions. :D
Well, this certainly looks to be one for the long haul folks. I am 2 hours into it and I have just 2 letters, which I hope are correct. Simple math tells me this is gonna take about 24 hours or more.
We shouldn't let you spend so much time on the UP to dwell on this stuff. Gonna have to have a talk with Wildflower about this.
If I start to hear to many mournful sighs. Ill rule out the extra video. Or, I'd tell you how I'd approach it. Um no. :) there are some ways to narrow your choices by using the entire clue. But really, no getting around it. Yer goona be sick of me before yer done. Woohahah!
Jeff, not sure it is a mistake or a misdirection - I think Video 12 should read the 4th word, not the 5th...
(done...)
The biggest clue I will give - PAY ATTENTION. They are quick, some visual, some audio.
Thank you to all the sponsors. ;)

yes, indeed, you can't do this while doing something else, you have to pay attention, all the time or you will miss 'it'. There is no way to get through this one fast, no matter how fast your brain works as far as I can see.
And especially yes, thank you to all the sponsors!
I think John may be messin with me :D

Well, if John found the same thing I did, I believe he is correct. No way can I get even close to getting this done anytime soon though. No idea how he did that, he must have a pornographic memory.
:D :D :D
He's a channel subscriber and had previously watched all the videos. There is an advantage to watching behind the forum channel regular. It makes you know stuff. Ask @stanwelch (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=17386) about that and the pigroast. :)
I subscribe also and get the announcements and usually watch them before they hit the forum, but I can't memorize this stuff. Geez :D
off the mark a bit, but do you have to have a you tube account to subscribe and like. is that how you get credit? I tried and did not complete making an account. is that how we can post video via you tube as well? sorry to go off course, but i assume there are others who do not know as well.
My goal this year was not to bamboozle, but to hopefully offer something you can take away from the contest even if you dont win.
The videos are me. They are us. Not the wizard behind a forestry forum curtain that flashes light when something goes awry, but the guy that just wants to find a way to be happy for what ever years hemay have left. If you dont watch any of the videos associated with the contest, just watch this one. I made it yesterday morning. Not for anyone but me, because I've been missing Pete so much this summer. Every time I do something at the cabin, every thing I do, I think of him and hope je approves, or at least looks down, shakes his head and grins. :)
It's been 5 years. - YouTube (https://youtu.be/myjh1qJpOUI)
well, I know, but i would like to support the cause, and it would save me time if someone led me down the road. Otherwise just like now, I have not taken the time to figure it out. thanks. I enjoyed the nature video for Pete. Thanks for everything Jeff.
Quote from: Old Greenhorn on December 13, 2021, 07:47:35 AMhe must have a pornographic memory
:D Ahhh, I've been accused of a lot of things :-X, but... And no, I don't have a
photographic memory. Just little bits of trivia that stick in my head.
is that where you see something once, and take all your clothes off! :o :o :o 8) :) :) :) :snowball:
Okay, let me get everyone started with a suggestion. Not sure if the first video in your pick list is sorted the same, but lets assume its the same is mine. First, just read all the clues, so you at least have seen what is there. Now, go watch the first video. Lets say it is the "Hardwood Island trail" video. Just watch it all the way through. Then, go back to the list of clues. I'll guarantee, you look at them, you will match it to the video instantly. One down.
"Argggggg" can't we just get a participation trophy? :D :D :D

Merry Christmas Jeff! I know you put you're heart into these Christmas contests. :) Stay healthy and happy, same for the family.
Here's to everyone taking part. smiley_beertoast
OK, Done. I came home after a very long hard day exhausted and covered in mud, sat down to check the forum before dinner and things just started to click. 5 Minutes later, done. Of course there were those 12 other hours reviewing videos before hand to work out some clues, but that fix for video 12 was the one that got me going straight.
Thanks Jeff for all the time you put into this. Thanks also to all the wonderful and thoughtful sponsors!

Thank you, Jeff and Tammy, for slowing me down, bringing me back down to earth. I really enjoyed participating in the contest, but much more, enjoyed seeing your life/home in the U. P. Just what I needed to settle in for a good time with family and friends over the holiday season.

I'm quite certain MANY are working on this, but are working through it. Consider the creator. I will say this one was different and as Mossy Chariot said, it brings to back to slowing down a bit and enjoying.
So Bryan I will say, this isn't the same as in the recent past and I think doing this in a binge is going to make you crazy. I kind of did that too and had to tear myself away to get off to work this morning. After an exhausting day I came home with a 'nope, not tonight' attitude about getting back into it and that's when it all came together by itself. If I could give a hint for solving this one it would be "relax, take your time and work through it exactly the way Jeff suggested in reply 22 above But make dang sure you have the correct information on video #12 as revised". :D :) ;D On this one, the journey matters more than the destination.
There are almost 3 weeks remaining in the contest. The guy that finishes first and the guy that finishes just in the nick of time have exactly the same chances at the drawing time. Besides, who does it for the prizes anyway? This contest is always just plain clean fun, at least for me. I get a kick out of the challenge and I love the banter that surrounds it while we all deal with the frustration Jeff has handed us in past years. This one was very low of that last part, no frustration, just work though it.
OK. yes that was all caps. i will do it in a few days when i have time. too much going on now. i will order some constant comment on amazon and have it delivered, and get a fire in the stove in the house, set up the tree, get some other stuff done, then I will set down and relax and do the puzzle. I have watched the videos so may have some of the answers. I hope this counts as some of the banter that you cherish so much. :) God Bless us every one. :snowball:
That was a lot of fun! Thanks for putting it all together @Jeff (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1)
Make sure you count words and letters accurately. I screwed one up and it threw me for a loop longer than I'm willing to admit!
STAPLED IT!!
I look forward to this every year :) Now what am I going to do, I never finish this early, usually it's a day or two before the competition ends. :D I am also revelling in my own smugness that I didn't even need any help from @Ianab (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=460) at all!! Now it's time to burn all the evidence and pretend like it was a walk in the park.
As usual love and thanks to @Jeff (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1) and @Wildflower (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=9) for their continued support and friendship and all that goes into making this place what it is. :-*

I had the feeling that I was the only one who did that! Glad to know I am not alone. usually 3 pages of cheat sheets, this year I just printed the instructions out and kept my notes right there.
It's a fine gift Jeff, Tammy and the sponsors and prize donors give every year to the forum membership and I too look forward to it. Different every year and always a challenge. Glad you got through it, looks like entries are beginning to build.
Actually, they are not. You can pretty much tell if there is any activity by looking at the view counts in the christmas contest play list. Thats something new this year, though not intended, you can tell the activity level of the contest. Next to nothing at this point.
Well we have plenty of time. I do note that the contest banner at the top of the page is smaller this year and I nearly missed it. I am thinking some folks haven't found it yet.
I agree! Can you make it bigger and more prominent, Jeff?
I plan to do it as always, but if I did it today it would join a list of PITA things I have to do today. I will do it when I have the time to enjoy it. Thanks everyone... or is it "God bless us, everyone!".
smiley_dizzy
Come on folks, my screwy eyes smiley_dizzy above was to depict how I felt after watching videos and solving this puzzle. If you had been next door or in the next room as PatD was, you could/would have heard my Victory Yell.
I only worked on it one evening so it ain't bad. I would suggest that you print off the sheet that says:
HERE ARE YOUR CLUES and jot down your answers as you find them.
:snowball:
(PatD is still working on it and actually has enough clues to solve it, but I say nothing.) :-X
There are short cuts... but you might miss something important! More time looking at me. Bahaha
Yup, I told PatD that there was probably an 'easy way in', but I did not spend any time looking for it. I am a subscriber and had previously watched all of the videos, but I still needed to watch to verify what I thought. The 'doggy treats' for example but I did not catch the 'Bigfoot' clue until I watched the video the second time.
Made it!!! 8)
Very fun, got my wife involved watching the videos. She especially liked the birthday gift for Tammy. We finished before watching all the videos, but she wants to keep watching the videos to find the clues. Thank you very much Jeff, thine creativity; never ceases to amaze me! Also to all the sponsors, especially to Logrite!
Merry Christmas! :new_year: :christmas:

I give the backflip an 8/10 LoL
The second attempt went much better and good on you for leaving both attempts in the video. Sometimes things don't go as planned!
I haven't participated in any of the previous Christmas contests because they seemed...nitpicky detail oriented. I did enjoy it and after watching the videos get a slightly clearer idea of what is rattling around in Jeff's mind. I enjoyed that part the most. Not that it necessarily means much coming from a complete stranger but I give you the highest compliment I can: I would enjoy having you as a neighbor.

Got-er-done! Wasn't as challenging as some of the previous ones. The biggest challenge for me was staying awake through the videos, shouldn't try doing this when one is tiredzzzzzzzzzzz :D Thanks again Jeff (and Tammy) and the sponsors. This place wouldn't exist without you.
Quote from: Sheepkeeper on December 19, 2021, 04:50:01 PMThe biggest challenge for me was staying awake through the videos
well, that doen't sound encouraging for my future video making endeavors :)
Nothing to do with the quality of your videos Jeff. I thoroughly enjoy watching them, it's just that I shouldn't try watching when I'm sleep deprived. Keep them coming, please. popcorn_smiley
I had watched some of the videos before the contest And recognized some of the clues. But, didn't remember for sure which video they were in. So, I'm watching all of them and I'm about 2/3 done.

Remember Jeff, you gave everybody an extra week this year. I bet some folks are just trying to get winter prep work done and planning on settling in on the contest during the Christmas week.
On the other hand, I will mention to those folks that this one will take some time, so don't leave it to the last minute, you will need time to work through it.

Just a reminder, there are a little over 7 days left in the contest and plenty of time to get yourselves entered. There are 5 great prizes, but more importantly, the contest is just good fun. If the prizes do matter to you, the odds are really good right now so get your name in the mix!
I enjoyed that video.
As most know, I live here on family land. I hope my parents approve of all of the things that I have done here.
Only had time to watch 4-5 videos, I have some letters.
Gaining!!!! ;D
Keep at it man, almost there!
Come on @thecfarm (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=436) , rootin for you.
Pretty quiet here. Jeff, what's the official entry count so far? 6 or 8? There's got to be more then that...
How about another clue for those that are trying - Give thanks to the most generous sponsor (IMHO) of the FF. ;) (note the style...) (gotta keep it a little cryptic)
Got another one. Does not seem to make any sense yet.
Oh wait!! Why would it?
This is the FF Christmas Contest. :D :D
Not many entries, that makes only a few of you so far, special. :D i will say I better not hear about someone accidentally helping someone that worked real hard at trying to get entered to get entered, that's something I just dont want to hear about. Nununununununun.

C'mon folks, you've got about 36 hours left and this is very do-able. Let's make it a horse race. Make sure the rules you are working from are the current ones as corrected since the first days of the contest. If you printed the thread out on the first day you might be working with one clue that is not quite correct (#12).
I have watched the videos as they came out, not sure I will get time this year. got the schedule done. finished day 1 out of 5 (nights 12-hour shifts) and I still have to upload receipts for my business expense before the new year.
Ive announced the winners in the first post. Thank you to those of you that at least gave it a shot. and most of all thank you to Logrite, Riteleg, Bluecreeper, thecfarm and Doc Henderson for supplying the prizes.

Hey Cfarm, thanks again for the donation of the hat. Kitty just contacted me today about my choice. I didn't expect a choice, just happy to have fun with the contest. She heard back from me and when it comes I will get a photo up. I'm in no rush. As I said, it's not the prizes, it's the contest.
You are welcome.
The contest is always a good time.
Well I'm here to fulfill my easy part of the bargain and share a photo with my cherished prize. Kitty contacted me a while back asking what kind of hat style I preferred and I didn't really expect to have a choice, then today it arrived and here is photographic evidence;

Now that's a work of act!!
Board looks good too.
Thanks Ray. I still recall my first year in the contest and winning homemade Jam from you and your wife. I think that walnut had great color and character. It could not have gone to a nicer family. I am glad everyone is happy with it. :new_year:
That has to be one of the most unusual pieces of Walnut that I have ever seen and at least I got to rub it while Marty was here. 8)
Wow! I want to play next year! :D
It was a butt log that was sealed and sat outside for a year or so. glad I did not burn it up or split it. i got about 8 great live edge slabs out of it. Marty (like many of us) considers Walnut to be his favorite wood.
