I will start by saying that he is not doing well after a surgery. for those of you who know him, he has had a tough go for the past 15 years or so. I have only known him for a few years on the forum, we were acquainted as we are both are from Kansas. I met him and his devoted wife Jillane At @customsawyer (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1861) get together pre covid. We have shared a few PMs. Please say a prayer as i share with you devastating condition.
I feel honored that I was asked, but it is with a heavy heart, that I share these PMs. i think it is the best way to fill you in. he did not want sympathy if things went well, and did not want to burden his wife with this task if they did not. they did not.

Oh well, there'll usually be another one.
Not posted on the forum but I am also going to be out of milling for awhile. Perhaps TMI, but with your knowledge it should be comprehensible.
15 years ago this week, I was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer which was surgically removed and I was left with a colostomy. I went through the chemo/radiation routine and, after they determined that I was not a candidate for reconnection, life went on. Sometime, years ago, I developed a parastomal hernia, which is why it looked like I was trying to steal some kid's volleyball. Shortly after my initial surgery I developed a ventral (incisional) hernia (they had also taken my gallbladder at the same time), which was repaired.
Radiation killed off a section of my small intestine and a re-section was done about 12 years ago, and they also fixed a mesh separation from the ventral hernia. The bariatric surgeon was not eager to go back in to repair the parastomal hernia, but it has gotten worse.
Sometime in the spring this year I thought I had an UTI, based on cloudy urine. I went to my PCP's PA and they agreed, put me on 7 days antibiotics. Cloudy urine persisted, along with some urgency, so I went to a urologist who did another urine test, 10 days of a different antibiotic. August 13th I went to the ED with extreme right flank pain, the same day the Urologist put me on a 14 day course of a stronger antibiotic. I was passing a kidney stone, the pain from which subsided while I was in the ED but they decided to keep me because of the persistent UTI. Over 3 days, and a couple of scans with and without contrast, they suspected that I had a fistula (rectal stump to bladder). Apparently scar tissue, time, gravity, and irradiated tissues caught up with me. I also was diagnosed with bilateral hydro-nephrosis.
They scheduled me for a couple of tests, a camera into my bladder and a flexible sigmoidoscopy, both of which indicated there probably was a connection. Inflammation of the bladder wall is apparently what is constricting my ureters. So the plan is to go in for surgery with 3 surgeons (2 urology and 1 bariatric) and the robotic suite. They will sever the connection, repair the bladder, insert two temporary stents in my ureters, repair/reduce/or remove the rectal stump, and repair the parastomal hernia.
Apparently, it is considered complex but not critical surgery so they had to coordinate a full open date for each surgeon and the surgical suite. My pre-surgical consultations were at the end of September and they put me on two strong antibiotics until surgery, the surgery is scheduled for November 18th. They told me to expect to be in the hospital 2 or 3 nights, followed by having a catheter for 2 weeks and a total of 6-8 weeks of activity restrictions.
I have been urging clients to get their logs milled, mostly small jobs where they had delivered logs and were waiting for better weather, or some other reason. Most of those have been done. I have referred all mobile job requests to an associate, former client who bought a swingblade mill. Limiting jobs to no more than 3 or 4 hours since I get tired easily. The waiting is the worse part, they told me surgery was probably necessary before I left the hospital in August, it'll be a total 90 days before it gets done.
Sorry if too much information but I wanted someone on the forum to know. Looking forward to the next sawyers' gathering. It isn't likely that I would make another trip to Jeff's pig roast but going to Jake's works well for us since we can combine that with a visit to Jillane's sister in NC.
Take care,
Tom
(This was added to a PM regarding an elm near me for a lady that just wanted it to not go to waste. BKH)
when i asked a few questions, he followed up with this PM.

Doc,
Update - I went in for surgery last Thursday. A couple of hours in the surgeon came out and told my wife that it was looking good, the presence of a fistula between the rectal stump and the bladder has been confirmed and they were setting up for its removal. About an hour later they found my wife and daughter in the cafeteria and took them to a private room. They had unexpectedly found cancer in the fistula, most likely a colon cancer. Although they removed the tumor, they were unable to get clear margins where it attached to the bladder and, had they gone further, they would not have been able to close the bladder. They decided to close up and involve me in the decision process.
They sent me home Sunday, just before the Chiefs game, with a catheter, drainage bulb and a bunch of staples. Absent any pre-surgical indications of a cancer potential, a primary concern was that cancer may have spread to other parts of my body and performing the more aggressive surgery would have been futile if it had spread. If the cancer had spread, my only option would have been rounds of chemo in an attempt to slow it down. They were quickly able to get approval for a PET scan (apparently Blue Medicare Advantage would not let them do it while I was in-patient) and I had that yesterday at noon. By end of day my surgeon's office called to tell me that they had found no cancer anywhere else in my body.
The specialist bladder surgeon they had brought in to assist my urologist and bariatric surgeons, is a leader in something I think they called neobladder construction. We are on the surgical path again, seeking approval for another surgery, hopefully quite soon since the less scar tissue they have to deal with the better. This will be a more aggressive surgery than what was planned for last week.
As I understand it, the course of treatment is to remove my bladder (which takes out the prostrate) and the rectal stump. They will also be removing several pieces of mesh from previous surgeries and hernias. He will create a new bladder pouch and attach the ureters. Although he normally uses small intestine to create the pouch, he can also use a section of colon if the small intestine tissue doesn't appear useable due to the radiation 14 years ago. That pouch will lead to a small stoma on the lower right side of my belly. As part of the parastomal hernia repair, they'll probably relocate my existing colostomy and, if they use colon tissue for the pouch, it will likely move to my right side. Instead of 6-10 weeks recovery time, I am looking at 3-6 months. They also indicated that there is a range of potential complications.
I have a lot of confidence in my bariatric surgeon and he has been great about discussing the potentials and quality of life issues, he would come into my room and sit on the bed and inquire into deeper issues other than the normal 'rounds' topics. He knows me to be a pragmatist and has been very helpful. I have fully expected to hear, 'sorry there is nothing we can do', so I am encouraged by the things they can do, the skill sets and technologies. I'm old enough to remember an adventure series from the 70s where the tag line was "we can rebuild him". (https://forestryforum.com/board/Smileys/default/smiley.gif)
Keeping my spirits up, thanks for listening.
Tom
then a follow up.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, hope you were able to get the day off, or at least a portion of it. In law enforcement, working holidays was a normal activity and ditto for Fire, EMS and ERs.
My apologies for the TMI, I try to share information based on ability to comprehend, my neighbor doesn't even know I was in the hospital.
I am on the Forum almost every day but I am not a daily contributor. If you happen to notice that I have not contributed (or signed in) for a while, could you contact my wife, Jillane, to see what happened? It isn't likely that she would think to, or figure out how to, post something on FF, but there are a number of friends on there that might care to know.
I am not a thoughts and prayers guy so I haven't posted anything about this on the Forum, I prefer facts and science-based evidence. If Jillane confirms that I am no longer able to participate, I would appreciate it if you would let the Forum know.
Thanks,
Tom

Jillane came in Wednesday and said, "who is Bryan Henderson?". As soon as I started to tell her, she remembered, she was very appreciative of your text. When I told her why I had messaged, you she commented, "I'd have never thought of how to contact them (FF)." She is one of those people who generally won't answer the phone if she doesn't recognize the number - now she will know who it is.
The PET scan was noon on Tuesday, "no spread" results by 4pm. Wednesday afternoon my surgeon's scheduling person called to tell me that they had the surgery approved (insurance) and I am scheduled for Thursday, 12/9/21 @ 0730 hrs., two weeks from yesterday.
At this point there shouldn't be any special prep, maybe a colon-cleansing (I've done at least 8 of those in the past 15 years). When you have a colostomy, it is a bit different than normal prep.
The elements in this surgery are all things the various surgeons have done previously, perhaps hundreds of times. I think the combination in a single patient, and my irradiated tissue, are what make it challenging and for an extended recovery time. While discussing the recovery and potential for complications, nothing has ever been mentioned about non-survival. It is just my practical nature that tries to consider the potentialities (I am 70 with a cancer/irradiation/chemo history). My primary surgeon mentioned that being able to wrestle big logs at my age, would work in my favor (remaining active into retirement), although he also cautioned that I won't be able to continue doing that after the surgery.
I don't intend to post anything about the surgery beforehand but, if something very unexpected, were to happen and I was disabled or did not survive, then I would appreciate you contacting Jillane and posting it then.
Although I may be in-patient for a week or so, I fully intend to be on-line, if not commenting by 12/11 or 12, and all of this may have been moot. [I may still have a folder on my computer of law enforcement alternative action plans that were never implemented 12+ years ago.]
I really appreciate that you would consider accepting this request from me, hopefully you won't need to do anything.
Take care,
Tom
i hope this is making sense, it did not seem so big, until this evening.

Thanks for checking in, I'm doing as well as could be expected, waiting until Thursday morning, check-in at 0530 hrs. Not going out much, managing my leg bag, perhaps Taco Tuesday tonight.
Did my last milling job of the year last Saturday, 12/04, milled out some elm and walnut cookies; 24/4, 16/4, and 12/4, for one of my custom furniture guys. Custom Furniture KC ? Furniture with a Story (http://www.customfurniturekc.com/)
Boy thats a lot of suffering. Did he make it thru the final surgery?
I got the text Thursday that his surgery went well started at 9 am and ended at 6 pm, 6 units of blood. in the ICU on a vent but doing well. I got an update on Saturday while in Louisiana. "still in ICU on a vent, in pain, on track and doing well". Got this near the end of our scout meeting tonight. " CT shows a massive stroke on the right, and a small one on the left". "He is not in pain because brain is not functioning". "He wont wake up but will squeeze hand". "this was devastating, as the surgery was a complete success".
I was not sure how to convey this info, but thought his words in private show what a proud and self sufficient man he is. he did not want to burden his wife, or trouble other members for even a thought or prayer if not needed. it is needed now, and I am trying to fulfil my duty to now share with all due respect. We were talking about the unintended damage from covid with scouts. I shared the text with them as it came in during the meeting. We decided to share our closing with the Lords prayer and Taps in honor of Tom. We hope he does well and recovers and survives, but it sounds tough. his wife asked me to share this now so he can benefit from Our community request from God. If nothing else, may he know we respect and admire him, and are hoping for the best what ever that may be.
he was in Law enforcement prior to retiring into sawing. he is an intelligent man happy to share with others. please join me in saying a prayer of hope and peace, and thinking of Tome the Sawyer and his family. I looked at his pictures and it looks like he met many on the forum. I may try to add links to those listed. my goal was to get this on real time. Thinking and praying for our friend Tom.
Mike he is alive and in the ICU. I did not ask a lot of detailed questions of his wife, but sense that it is bad. I will update as we go. his wife agreed we should ask for prayer at this time and I will update concerned and caring members as I get news.

Thank you for posting this doc.
Tom sent me a pm quite a few years back and told me his story of fighting colon cancer when I had posted about my colon cancer issues. He gave me so much encouragement and the will to press forward. I owe a huge thank you to that great man for that.
This really saddens me.

I have no update this eve. but, opted not to inquire. I will update as soon as I hear anything. thank you all, this means a lot to his wife, I am sure.
I texted with Jillane. He had some purposeful movement and was able to pull his feeding tube out overnight. I would like to interpret that, as there is still some fight left. So far, he is holding his own. The stroke is still massive and of great concern. Thanks to everyone for your sincere comments.
I have no doubt there is fight left in him. He's a tough bird with a strong spirit. Just gotta fight back one hour at a time. Good to hear some encouraging news even if it's small. Lets keep praying.
Prayers sent to Tom and a very strong FAMILY. Very hard on everyone.
This was posted while I was on the road so I am just reading it. We first met Tom and Jillian at the Chili Chili and immediately developed a friendship. Thank you doc henderson for keeping us informed.
Our Prayers are for Comfort and Healing Grace for Tom and for Strength for Jillian and the Family.
I never met Tom but we PM several times. His willingness to share his business card and pamphlet really helped me get started. Prayers to he and his family. Thanks for taking time to keep us in the loop Doc.
Doc,
Thank you for posting this and keeping us all in the loop. We don't need to know Tom or Jillian to feel compassionate toward them or to pray for them and on their behalf. This thread was almost more than I could read, it breaks my heart. I think the basic nature of all of us is to want to help, to make things better in any way possible but we can certainly all pray for the peace of God for Tom and his family.
I'm sorry to hear this. I don't hang out much around the milling sections here, but I had some interaction with Tom via pm. He's a good guy, and I'm wishing him the best.
Doc, thanks for sharing; I've added Tom to the prayer list.
He and Jillane stopped by the farm and shared a meal with us a number of years back. He's a great guy and I pray that he recovers completely and quickly.
Scott
on behalf of the forum, I had sandwiches and cookies delivered for the nurses and the waiting area persons, on behalf of Toms family. the ICU charge nurse said they were having a busy bad day and really appreciated it. a girls gotta eat. not sure the families in the waiting room will be as hungry, but they will know we care and are thinking about them.
Much appreciated I'm sure and thank you for doing that.
Doc, that was very thoughtful of you. I'm sure the folks working there appreciate it, and the family's of the loved ones too
good on ya doc.
Yes, this is heavy news, and thanks for keeping us updated.
Doc, thanks so much for doing that!
I've been busy lately and am just seeing this thread. Anyone that has spent any time on the forum "knows" Tom the Sawyer. I have always respected the info he shared. I'm praying for him and his family and hoping for the best. Thanks for the updates , Doc.
You're the best doc !
Many thanks Doc, from way over here. :)
Hoping for a great recovery for Tom.
Thanks Doc Henderson for your time and thoughtfulness.
Prayers from PA, I just read through this and it's hard to hear about a good person suffering. Thanks doc for keeping the FF family in the loop.
My prayers go out to Tom. Thanks Doc for bringing this
Wishing all the best, 2 years ago I got to meet Tom and got a tour of his place,.
Great person, had a great time visiting.
Another voice from Canada; Tom was at one of Jakes 'Projects' when we first met.
A man of strength and quiet confidence, he shared freely of his knowledge. I hope that we can all muster the same grace and clear thinking in our waning years. God speed Tom!
Thanks Doc, you are an example to us all.
Never met Tom ,but we are praying for him. Thanks Doc for the updates.
Just seeing this now. Hoping for the best. Wishing Tom and his family can find strength and comfort.
Thanks Doc for all you've done.
I did text this afternoon. The family is hanging in there, he is still hold on. they are looking for a rehab center for him to go too. hard to know for sure what the future holds. thanks everyone. the family's hearts are warmed reading the comments, and it means a lot now.
Well this sounds like an important incremental step in the right direction. If anybody can make the best of this, I'll bet Tom can. Thinking warm thoughts for continued progress.
Thanks for the info- Doc pc_smiley
A great other doc (vet) on the forum, suggested they could help if he wound up at Madona in @Nebraska (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=45256) . I passed this on to the family, and later received a text that Tom's wife and children discussed it and they hope to stay closer to home in KC, but they thanked us for the offer of support.
Madonna rehabilitation hospital is a great place. I understand the family wanting him to stay closer to home. If he does happen to end up at Madonna and the family needs anything please reach out to me as I live in the area. Prayers continuing for Tom and his family. Thanks Doc for the updates.
they are looking for a next place, but for now they remain in the hospital. Sounds like a long recovery but I guess that is something. @Jim_Rogers (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=95) had requested an address for cards and such so they can be in the room physically. nice idea, and the family agrees.

My "Tom the Sawyer" story is that back years ago, he did a job for the University of Kansas Professor Matt Burke.
He milled some urban trees into timbers for the professor's class to use to do some timber framing.
During their conversations, the professor asked if he knew anyone who could help him teach his students "timber framing".
Tom told him of me, from my posting here on this forum. Having never met me.
The professor hired me to come to KU and teach.
During my first of two visits there, Tom came by the college.
And we made an arrangement for him to pick me up and take me to his house/sawmill site to visit and see his operation.
I went there with Tom and viewed his set up. As well as having dinner with him and his wife.
Afterwards, he drove me back to my guest quarters at KU.
I had a very nice visit with him and his wife.
Jim Rogers
It may be a while, and his wife will let me know if he is planning to go to a rehab facility. I think they will do that (forward the mail) . I know they have a patient satisfaction public relations department. If it is about to change I will let you all know. good point Jeff.
I can't speak for all hospitals, but the hospital I worked at would forward mail to the discharged patient's home address. That was one of my duties as a greeter, look up the address and write them on the envelopes.

I'm just catching up on this thread. Thanks Doc for all you have done. You are as thoughtful as I one day hope to be.
Whenever Tom the Sawyer posted something it was time to read and read it carefully. He knew his stuff and had a good handle on the business side of things. Very smart and clear in his writing here. Praying for Tom that he has a full recovery.

I heard from Jillane today. Tom made it to a rehab skilled nursing center for one day but had an unresponsive episode and is back in the hospital. God Speed.

I just saw this post - sorry to be late. Tom was in NC several years go and stopped by to visit the sawyers in the area. He is a very interesting and knowledgeable person. I was particularly impressed with his log-loading ability onto his trailer as shown on an FF post. I snapped a picture of him standing in front of my barn but cannot find it. I will keep looking because I think he would enjoy seeing it. I am holding him in my prayers.
Doc any update on Tom ? I guess no new is good news. Stell ben praying for him and

thanks, I will check in. I have been making an effort to not be a nuisance assuming Jillane will let us know if something changes. It has been a while.
She posted on facebook yesterday.

New to the forum, but have read of bunch of his postings. Life is hard. Guys like Tom make it easier. God Bless.
Doc thanks for the update. Continuing the prayers for Tom.
Any update on Tom? I was thinking of him and wondering how he is faring.
I will check in. It had been slow going so I am trying to not be a nuisance, but it has been a while. thanks.
His swallowing is getting better. He has lost a lot of weight. the L side that is paralyzed from the stroke is also in pain. his difficulty sitting up, is making PT a no go. His wife Jillane feels his care is good at the private care center.
I have asked for the new address so we can send cards and such if wanted.
Thanks for the update Doc.
f/u questions. his comprehension and speech are doing pretty good. cannot use his phone and has some memory trouble. Jillane says she is eating and sleeping better, which as you can imagine, has been an issue with all the stress.

Doc Thanks for the update. He is still in my prayers. Will get another card in the mail.
Got a nice update from Jillane, Tom has been moved to room 202. He now has a roommate. thinking long term. I asked for and got a good pic of Tom in his heyday. I may try to make a plaque we can all sign at the sawing project and return it too Tom for his room.

Could we do a picture of a group of everyone at the project? Would that be to detailed to laser?
fortunately, the guys in the forum are pretty simple... :) good thought. lets do it. you know you do not know till you try. It is a plan. Thanks Jeff.
I will try to prep the wood and bring it to sign and do the pic after. or may do one to sign and add the pic in as well. It is always good after a catastrophic medical illness, for the folks to see and know you were a bright and shining star before. I may include his law enforcement accomplishments as well. Thanks Jeff.
Thanks for the update. I will send a card as I can not make the Project.
Excellent idea, I am looking forward to putting my X on the plaque. I am very glad he is on the upward curve.
we have been talking about our support for @Tom the Sawyer (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=9572) on other threads, such as the sawing project 2022. here is a pic of the plaque we all signed at the project recently, held by Tom in his skilled nursing facility after his stroke.

That's really great!
Doc: did you take a picture of the back? with all the names of everyone who signed it?

I did not but here is Tom holding it, with the back showing.
I never saw the plaque nor had an opportunity to sign it. :-X
Quote from: Magicman on April 15, 2022, 08:28:55 PMI never saw the plaque nor had an opportunity to sign it.
MM, Doc got it out and announced it early Friday, I think before you got there. It was in Jake's office/kiln shop for signatures.
Thanks, I wish some reminders had been announced for those arriving later Friday and even Saturday. ::)
my personal apologies MM. not intentional, and I did a few reminders, but must not have been in the crowd you were in. I should have read the names and done an inventory. I am sorry. I will resend this thread to Jillane, and they can read it over, and he will know of your sentiments. Maybe soon he can navigate the forum again. I was sleeping today, and they called, and he sounded good on the message he left. Jillane said they both cried a little. Lynn, I am sure when they read this, they will be reminded of your concern for them.
A good job!!!!
thumbs-up Excellent idea.
I am super pleased to hear Tom is doing so well! The plaque looks great and I hope he gets joy from it, sorry I couldn't be there to add my signature.
Hoping and praying for the best for Tom!
No apology necessary doc, as I know/knew that it was not intentional, just an oversight.
Tom has what really matters and that is Prayers for Healing Grace.
That's great to see and I do hope he can get back on and chat with us again.
FWIW I had a plaque presented to me upon retirement with many signatures. Sadly the "permanent" marker that was used faded out after a few years. It was on the wall and not in direct sunlight. I wonder if the writing could be coated with something to help it hold up over the years. So sad to see the names disappear.
I do coat over the signatures with the same poly after it has set a bit. I did not do it this time, as I felt time was of the essance.
Great idea and glad to see Tom with the plaque. My thoughts are with Tom.
new address for Tom.

Jillane has to furnish a nail, and the plaque will hang in his room.
thanks for posting that new address.

got a nice update from Jillane the other day. He is doing well at Baldwin. He is up to 190 pounds from 162. They take good care of him. He likes the food and has made some friends. He has an electric wheelchair and can roam the halls on his own. He needs help getting in and out of the wheelchair and bed. His L leg is weak, but he can stand by a support. His L side still has pain. He spends his days in the wheelchair and recliner, not the bed. so overall doing better. He answers his phone most of the time.

Thank you so much for the update, Doc. He looks great in that picture👍
UPDATE: I was concerned when I got out of a late 4 hour long board meeting and saw I had a text from Jillane. It was good. Tom still is off balance and uses a motorized wheelchair. he is slow to answer getting his phone out of a pouch, but is speaking well, remembers people, and enjoys talking on the phone. his wife Jillane is there most days from 10 am to 1 pm. If you choose to call, she can help him with his phone. she is not there on Wednesdays. He has made the decision to sell his mill. they have a ramp installed at there home so he can come home for visits. His rehab facility is in a town next to Lawrence, home of KU. they are looking for a handicap van.

he is up to 190# and she said she could not get him to smile. What a long road. What insight he must of had to ask someone to be prepared if something did not go as planned.
He lives at Baldwin Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, 1223 Orchard Lane room 13. Baldwin City, Ks 66006.
If you know Tom you can call. same number. If you know him and do not have the number, please PM me and I will give it out in a more discrete way.
Thanks Doc, for the update. Been praying for Tom and Jillane. Glad he is keeping his weight up.
I get pleasure from eating and hope Tom does too. Keep getting better.
Sounds Good , will keep Tom and his Family in my Thoughts and Prayers

Well Tom, you've certainly had a rough road to ride on. Good that you are gaining ground. Take care and stay strong. smiley_thumbsup
Update: Tom had a grandmal seizure a week or so back. I did find someone looking for a sawmill from Manhattan, Ks. He knows my good friend from college who is a chiropractor in Manhattan. a contractor so hopefully a good guy. and Tom had a home visit.

Buddy Winslow Hogard is Toms best friend!
Tom has an intern John that will help show the mill and other equipment for sale
Good to see that Tom got to go home even if only to visit. Your a good friend Doc.
Good for Tom. Glad he got to go home for a spell.
I've just recently started looking at the general board and came across this thread. It was a tough read, I never met Tom, but have enjoyed his posts. It is good to know that he's doing well! He's definitely been down a rough road and is one tough dude! Will be praying for continued improvement.
@doc henderson (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=41041) doc, any updates with Tom? Thanks
I will check in today. thanks for the prompt. I had been thinking about him as well. He gave me pointer before the fist sawing project I then attended in GA. That is where I first met him a few years back.
I texted with Jillane. Tom is doing relatively well. He is able to spend time at home. He is still getting restorative therapy. He still lives in a care facility. He has put on weight and is up to 209 pounds. he got a new recliner that fits his 6 foot 3 frame and is in a private room. Timber King picked up the mill to sell for them. He still has a forklift, and flatbed dump truck to sell. He spent time in his home for the holidays. they are going out to lunch each week, unless it is too cold.

Thanks for the update.

he is doing overall well. Had covid for a bit in December. Jillane says the quarantine was worse than the illness. Only answers his phone for a few known folks. cannot work his tablet, so has not got back on the forum. he went to his home for about 5 hours on Christmas and Thanksgiving. She says he is still very proud of the plaque we made, signed and sent to him. He shows it to every new nurse that comes in his room. He has quit PT as he did not feel it was helping. Jillane is doing OK and still lives in their home, that is a geometric dome. She wishes a Happy New Year to everyone here on Toms behalf.
Thanks for the update
I wish Tom well in the New Year!!!!
Thank You doc, and I send Well Wishes for a :new_year: to both Tom and Jillane.
Doc Thanks for the update. Keeping both of them in our prayers.
Thank you doc for the update on Tom.
Brent
Great news Tom is doing good. He looks good in the photo and sending best wishes to tom and his wife.
Great to see him doing well. Thanks for the update.
Had been wondering about Tom. Thanks for the update.
Best wishes for the new year to Tom and Jillane.
I sent a link to this thread, so hopefully Jillane can bring it up for Tom to go over the entire thread.
Nice of you guys to honor the man as you have.
well, it is funny you say that, Mike. I just got a text from Jillane. she had planned to go after work on thursday. she decided to leave work today to review the past posts on the thread. to this point he has seen none of it as he has difficulty after the stroke navigating electronics. Report of two humans with man tears in their eyes that are very much appreciative of all the thoughts and prayers and well wishes.
Jillane's text. "Alrighty,... bawling here! I couldn't wait until Thursday. Had to come down after work to read these to him. He teared up too. Much appreciated. more than we can ever thank you for, and of course thank them all for us!"
just over 2 years (December 13, 2021) and almost 15,000 reads, and 195 posts. Boys and girls, you all made an old sawyer and his wife really happy today, and they deserve it.
Best wishes to you Jillane and Tom.

Tom is a wonderful guy, my hat is off to everone that keeps us updated on how hes doing. It's just proves how much we care about our forestry family members.
I got a like on this thread and it reminded me to check in. I texted Tom's wife Jillane and she sent an update and approved of sharing it with this family.
"Tom just got rid of a severe UTI and is now doing much better. His weight dipped to 212. He is back up to 220. His back gets so bad he just can't eat. I took him to Popeyes and to see the movie Horizon, which was 3 hours long. He was glad to be back to his recliner. He gets very good care in Baldwin, Ks and the doctor there sees him every week. He still has trouble answering his phone. His daughter and I have our own ring tones and he will usually answer. He never could figure out the tablet. I still go out every day but Wednesday. Take care and again thanks for checking in."
I told Jillane that if his friends on the forum make comments, I would send her a link so she can help him look through the messages and well wishes. Doc.
Hi Tom, Best wishes and glad you got out to see a movie. Regards Stephen1
Hi Tom,
I know things aren't the same as they used to be, but keep them gals busy. Good to get out with them once in awhile.

Tom says Hello! latest and greatest pic.
Well hello back to you Tom!!!!
Well Tom has gone to a better place. He passed late last night. His wife said he was exhausted and had stopped eating much in the past several months. He was in Hospice and passed peacefully. Had to be tough going from a busy proud man to not having much hope for a substantial recovery. Godspeed.
Sad news for sure.
Do you have an address for us to use to send her a sympathy card?
PM me if you wish.
Jim Rogers
Rest in Peace Tom The Sawyer.
Sad news. He was a great guy and I had lots of respect for him. Rest in peace.
I have asked for an address for this purpose and will add info about a poss. funeral or celebration of life. He is former law enforcement so will see what comes next. I sent a link to this thread to update Jillane. The comments and support have been great, and I know once she got him online so he could read them all. It has meant a lot to them both. I will see if his wife wants the address public or more so PMs to those who want it.
I know it was a long hard struggle for Tom. Condolences to family.
Condolences and prayers sent to his family and friends. Always enjoyed his knowledgeable and insightful posts on any given topic. May he rest in peace.
Always sad to hear when one of the Forum members passes, rest in peace Tom. Thank you Doc for all you've done with this topic thread and keeping in touch with the family.
Rest in peace, Tom the Sawyer
Tom was a stand up guy. I'm proud to say I knew him. RIP Tom and my condolences to the family.
Condolences for all who mourn this good man's passing.
Tom's posts on picking up logs with an arch mounted to a trailer made a huge impression on me. Practical, simple and sharing good information.
I learned a lot from his posts, and regret seeing this notice of his passing and not meeting him at The Projects in Georgia.
Condolences to his wife, family and friends.
Sad to hear this.
@tree farmer you must be reviewing the whole thread. thanks.
Sending condolences to the family. RIP Tom.
RIP Tom
I always enjoyed reading Toms posts and sorry I never met him.
RIP Tom
Rest in Peace Tom. He and I had a nice visit at the Chilly Chili.
I sent a PM to those who have commented so far with and address for the family. If you pass it on, be sure you are familiar with the recipient. this is to protect the family. it should not be posted in the thread here. God bless you all. In review I see I missed a couple. I will add.
Sorry to hear of his death. Praying for his family.
Thanks
@Sixacresand, I will send out another round of the family address for any interested.
Thanks Doc.

Thomas A. Hogard Obituary March 18, 2025 - Overland Park Funeral Chapel (https://www.overlandparkchapel.com/obituaries/thomas-hogard)
the obit was not posted entirely yet, but many good pics of him when he was younger, (like we all were at one time). the link should also access the info when it is up, and you could leave a note to the family here as well.
Rip Mr Tom, over the years you've added a lot of knowledge to The Forestry Forum, for use by sawyers worldwide!
Condolence to all.
Thank you doc. Sad news indeed. He helped me out in ways that are tough for me to explain.
R.I.P. Tom

I kinda liked this line.
You never saw Tom without a measuring tape of some kind
Rest gently with the Angels Tom,

Truly a man of sage advice. I always found that if Tom said it, you could bank on it.
While I enjoy Doc's posts, I have been dreading this thread's outcome for some time. He will be missed.
Sad news indeed. He will be sorely missed. RIP Tom.
Sad news! He will be missed.
Prayers are sent with sympathy to his family and a slow hand salute is given for his career as a police officer and first responder.
