What Forestry Forum members do you all know near you? Kansas is not a huge forestry area, but we have lots of woodworkers and a few logger/sawyers. In the middle of another thread, another member and I realized we live only 6 miles apart. I have got aquatinted with @farmfromkansas (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=36643) and a few others but never met. I got to meet, tour the property and see a Walnut log of his Neighbor. Please meet @Osage (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=58852)

@Tom the Sawyer (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=9572) and I met on the forum and in person at the 2019 (I think) Sawing project in Georgia @customsawyer (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1861)

The functions have been great to get to know others that we talk to on a daily basis here on the forum.
I've met 2 in my area. One I met through the forum (Gearbox) now I can't get rid of the guy😂😂 another I met working next to his place and realized he was a Forum member (DeepWoods)
This past weekend I traveled to a timber framing event in VA.
On my way I stopped by scsmith42 place to visit him. He took a picture of us in his shop with is camera which had a timer on it. He's supposed to post that picture.
But while I was there, I saw his next victim on the blocks to be slabbed up:
of all the logs in his yard, this is one of the small ones.
On my way home from the weekend event in Lexington, VA, I stopped by a job site and met up with @DonP:
Don's on the left, me on the right, in front of the historic farm house that he's been working on for some time.
He showed me some of his work to restore the foundation under this house:

He, in my opinion, is doing a great job at it.
Jim Rogers
If anyone in the north central North Carolina region wants to show off their setup, let me know! I could off-bearer for a couple hours.
This is a kool thread, I love meeting new ppl, especially with similar interests. Of course, I can come off as a bad word I cannot type on the forum. But I try not to :)
I've met several members. I went to visit Southside and Wudman at Southside's mill a while back and PatrickNC came by our business and got a tour here. RWTF, aka Rupert, all the way from the UK stopped in and visited at one of my semi-stationary milling sites. Of course Joe Whitley the Wood-mizer dealer here in NC is a member as well.
Several are within two or three hours but we haven't met yet. Samandothers, SeaLark37, DonP, scsmith, Jim_Rogers, and apparently IndiLina among others are all not too far away.
Looking forward to meeting members at the Sawing Project Friday and Saturday.
Besides meeting and talking to him at two Pig Roasts, I had the honor of running into @Ron Scott (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=2) in Cadillac at the Wex. I know others are around here, and I may have seen them at Lutke's- but we have not been formally introduced.
Great Thread, Doc.....
The only member I met so far was 4x4 and I went to him on my way to camp up north. The second time I stopped he was very busy loading trucks so no time. It is often like that here so I understand. Members are welcome here but you are on your own if I am burning fuel or helping someone.
Now I've never met @Magicman (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=10011) , but I've met his Sister, even though I didn't know it at the time. We had talked on another forum about her trip to NZ, and I gave her some tips and said she was welcome to call in if she was passing this way, She did, and mentioned how her Brother was into sawmilling as well.
It wasn't until she got home and mentioned to MM about meeting this guy called Ian in NZ that they put 2 and 2 together.
So you never know who you will run into.
Wow, I've had that happen in country but never across the world, that is too cool :).
Jim, we need to do a pic from a higher angle, we're all beard :D
I met Tom the Sawyer, SCSmith and a number of members at a couple of Harry Watt's seminars a few years ago but largely I'm a hermit.
Crusarius, we worked for someone years ago, high maintenance trust child. During one conversation she proudly mentioned that she had been diagnosed with 27 different personalities. I replied I just had the 2 and I tried real hard not to let #2 out very often :D.
I got to meet Ray aka thecfarm over at the hardware store where he works.
Probably the best hardware store within 30 miles any direction. They had a nice of supply trees and shrubs
when I was there last summer too.
He set me up with some culvert he had on sale and now my
property is accessible year round for all of $120. No more mud hole.
Real nice guy and lives just over the hill from here. Thanks Ray !
Stop in to the Paris Farmers union in Jay if you are passing through and say hi to Ray.
Of course I've met Doc and Old Greenhorn and Brent(Doubletreebelgians) at the roast, plus many more this past summer. You know who you are. It was an honor to meet all of them. Then this January I was standing in line to pick up some of my auction wins in St Louis and got to talking to the guy in line behind me. Turns out he is @UncleMoustache (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=52997)
Met follow forum admin Ron Scott because of the forum. Turns out he may have bow hunted on my property years back (unbeknown to me). :D His mother lived less than a mile from me, and his uncle was a firefighter on our department.
The other craziest meeting, was a trip into Canada years ago for a Forestry Equipment show with Jeff. The first person we see when we entered the gate wasn't a Canadian, but a forum member from New Zeeland. ;D
I've met hundreds of members over the years and hope to meet many more.
I've PM a few that are near me but only met one (Billy) but can't remember his FF handle. He is rarely on here and just happened on my cabin build a couple years ago. Great guy - bought a few cedar logs from him to complete my deck and he sawed up some cedar fence boards (~700 bd-ft) for my niece's place down in Sacramento.
Haven't met any members near me. The only one I have met was because of a fifty wedding anniversary party that was almost five hundred miles from home in UncleMoustache's home town. A buddy of mine had moved down their some years before. We rolled into town and I happen to see a older four door pickup that he Josh had posted pictures of on a different forum. Come to find out he lived down the street from my buddy and his wife and he came to the anniversary party. Had a nice visit with Josh and his wife. I hope one of these years to make it to the pig roast.
There are a lot of sawmill owners in my area.If you have ever flown over West Virginia you won't see much except trees .I don't guess many are on this forum which is a shame because of the knowledge to be gained here is priceless. If any of you guys are ever close by look me up. I'll tell you all I know in about 5 minutes
Yeah, we have lots of mobile sawmill owners in my neck of the woods. Their signs dot the roadsides. You can search for folks nearby by using the Members selection off of the main menu, then search for members.

You don't have pictures so you can't prove you know me .
Yesterday, I had the good fortune of seeing @Ron Scott (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=2) at a Juried Art show in which I was set up to display my Art. We knew we would be challenged regarding the veracity of this claim, so I snapped a quick pic. Those clouds over Ron's head quickly blew a Rain shower in, and he was trapped in my booth for a while. I was able to pick his brain about a number of current issues I'm dealing with in my Wood-related projects, and he also made some suggestions for Art pieces I should try. I still marvel at the patience and generosity of our more experienced FF Members, and their willingness to share their knowledge.
Unfortunately, the rain had a detrimental effect on my sales, but the day was a success because of our chance meeting.

I don't know, that looks like one of those "I saw a celebrity" photos taken with hat, sunglasses, hoodie on from 50' away with a potato phone. :D
I'm glad there are members that consider Ron "Celebrity", but to some of us that get to rub elbows with VIPs, it's just casual happenstance.....
If there are any more questions regarding the integrity of those of us that were there, please limit them to the only person deserving of this scrutiny- me. :D
The rain delay made for a good visit and a review of Olcowhand's skilled metal artwork.
Well, I had a visitor at work today. A nice surprise. I was sorry I was not at home to show them around.

A member I really wanted to meet. any guesses?
Bindian?
Well they sure ain't Magic Man. ;D
I was going to guess Bindian too, because I thought she had mentioned having a daughter and granddaughter.
'tis her, fur sure. Pretty lady.

MagicMan was nice enough to invite my wife and I over to visit with him and his wife Pat earlier this year. We had a good visit and he showed me his mill and how it works. Then they fed us lunch. His is still the only mill I've seen in person except for one I'm "attempting" to build. Great people. I don't know of any other members in this area.
It was a very nice visit but all that I had handy to saw was some rotten ERC. ::)
I thought you all might be able to guess with nearly no clues. She drove and hour out of her way, and it was nice to meet her family on the way to SD. i have been working so much that her time passing by landed in the middle of a workday. no sawmill tour. Brandi, Rebecca and Chloe.
Doc,I was going to take a guess but after looking at a map I saw that Kansas is a pretty long ways from Texas.I don't get out much :laugh:I can't get anyone to drive 10 minutes out of their way to stop and see me.
Well we had a 10 minute visit, and it isn't like they then turned around and went home. nice family and FF member on vacation. 8)
And... I got actual hugs from @Bindian (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=17364) 8)

A member I really wanted to meet. any guesses?
My guess is me. Thanks for posting Doc! Our car broke it's shifter cable in the Black Hills parked at Cosmos Mystery Area. Go figure that one out!
We had to rent a one way rental, stay an extra day, and get a transport guy to haul the car home after being fixed. 3$$$ I was not planning on spending. We had to come home because Sturgis was starting and hotels were all booked.
We got to go see Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial, Bear Country, Candyland, Cosmos and some deep cave I had to be escorted out half way in. My daughter and Grand daughter went on down 250 feet. 79 degrees outside. Heavy sweater needed underground. .
I have been wanting to go see the Crazy Horse Memorial for 30 years. I hope to go again. It is still not complete. It is bigger than Mt. Rushmore in every area.
We drove home yesterday from OKC through 106 degree heat. We were detoured twice off of I-35 for wrecked. We hit Dallas at rush hour.....that place is a mess. We rented a Jeep Grand Cherokee full time 4x4 with all the bells and do dads. I fell in love with it's big screen back up camera.
Love meeting Doc and he is way nicer than he is here. He is a real hoot!
How would it be possible for anyone to be nicer than I am here? :snowball: :) Not everyone gets me :), but glad you do @Bindian (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=17364) . sorry for your trouble but glad you made it home safely. Doc.
Doc,
We came home on a wing and lots and lots of prayers.
Memories of coasting the dead class A motorhome from the Mt Rushmore parking lot, down to Rapid City, across the road and bumped up right into a spot at a campground not a mile from a NAPA. They had a new alternator the next day and off we went. We called stuff like that trail magic. I think the first time I saw Crazy Horse was 51 years ago... I don't guess I've seen it in 20. They did some night blasts that were revealing his face then.
Well, Bindian, maybe the next step is to meet WV😂
Quote from: barbender on August 02, 2023, 09:54:42 PMWell, Bindian, maybe the next step is to meet WV😂
That would be a big barn blowout meeting him.

The bus driver that took us to the base of the mountain said they quit blasting in 2015. They are using diamond embedded cables now that loop around some pulleys (and of course motors) and cut the rock like a chain saw.
I hope to go back some day. Maybe next year, as there are numerous things to see in the sacred Black Hills.
Since Doc mentioned me here, I guess I will post a photo of the Keystone Wye 3 Arch Wooden Laminated Bridge near Kestone, SD.
And that exposed wooden bridge is 56 years old. Dad switched to glulams about the time that bridge was built. You were about 5 minutes from one of our house builds there. I think we built 7 in the Hills and thought about staying, really liked the people, but not the winter.
When they were building they were hauling the arches upside down strapped to an independent rear axle dolly. I think they were around 90'. One of the trucks flipped, I mean flipped, and ruined 3 arches which then had to be remade slowing everything to a crawl for awhile.
Brandy, I see you caught a helo in the background. you just cannot get away from them huh?
Nope! I'm going back and take a helicopter ride around Crazy Horse.
Quote from: Don P on August 04, 2023, 10:21:49 PMOne of the trucks flipped, I mean flipped, and ruined 3 arches which then had to be remade slowing everything to a crawl for awhile.
Hahaha. The free tourist guide magazine said 6 arches were made, but 3 didn't pass structural tests.
should have read, "no longer" meet structural tests. :) :) :)

I looked up pics of that wreck online. They had those arches loaded like a "smile", with the ends pretty high up in the air. The truck was going around a sharp curve when it rolled, so I'm thinking high center of gravity was definitely a factor.
They had dedicated trucks where I worked that did bridge beams (like 100' long beams), when I drove flatbed. Those guys said they'd have a predetermined route (with daytime only permits), and were routed to avoid tight corners as much as possible. There were times when they had to go on a "corkscrew" on ramp, and those were the scariest. :o
was preparing an order for cotton picker spindle cleaner and had a nice phone call with
@busenitzcww to see if he wanted a jug, as the shipping is 99 bucks no matter how much you order. he did not but we had a great call. he live about an hour away. I got four 5-gallon pails.
