A friend gave me some oak logs for craftwork. I don't have leaves to ID. Just end grain, bark, and some buds on the logs.

Not saying it is, but maybe chestnut oak.
Where are all you gurus?
Was the bark wet in your first photo?
My "wild guess" is Black Oak?
The end of a Black Oak looks like Red Oak and the bark looks chunky.

I have lots of red, black, white and chestnut oak on our place. I "look" sort of chunky myself too. :D
With the tree cookie it looks like chestnut oak to me.
