I wonder who did what and when necessitating the directions "For Oral Use Only"?

At least it's Berry and not Drano flavored.

My doc told me in 10 years that will become an annual thing, yikes  electricuted-smiley

Just to sort of feel like I'm part of 'The Club' - I am scheduled for next Wednesday - first one on the docket apparently too..
Hope the Doc is an early riser with steady hands!   :D
It's not the procedure - but the prep that I dread!

Actually it was for a gut CT scan this morning.  I have had a mighty sore lower gut since Monday so I went to the Dr. Wednesday, drank it this morning, got scanned, and now I wait....??  Not that I want it but I am hoping for Diverticulitis which was his first thought.  He said that it could even be gall bladder, so we will see.

Thanks for the well wishes and even the less than well wishes.  :)  :D

I'll direct you low end guys to this topic:  Colonscopy (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?topic=59671.msg870695#msg870695)

Be glad they are not all doing your procedure.  drink barium and get a colonoscopy! :o :o :o  8) 8) 8)  :snowball: :snowball: :snowball:
It must taste like berries and be really good...  Berrie ummmm.   It is the contrast for x-rays, not a laxative.  :)  Left lower quadrant diverticulitis usually, upper mid abd. gallbladder.
Godspeed sir!

Well, I'm sure not going to be one of those 'low end' guys, and I don't wanna 'divert' this thread.
Some people have 'the gall' when they keep wandering way the heck off topic. 😁
Best wishes MM, hope you get things sorted out soon and get yourself back to fighting trim!

What is an expected layup time for Lynn? Suppose it depends on the surgery needed to do the job at hand. Recall 70 years ago, such surgery was done with a pretty large opening. Likely not these days.

Should ask (but won't) my grand daughter who is in 3rd year med school and doing monthly "clinicals" at different locations in the midwest. Getting some real practical and hands-on experiences that I hear tell about. Was in an ER last month, and told to go ahead with a toe amputation and do it herself.  :o :o

Yeah, I've got a scar from that ~50 years ago. Now it's keyhole surgery and usually only overnight in hospital. But that's for the Average 14 year old, seems to take a bit longer to bounce back as we get less young.

It is a common surgery.  I do not want to jinx anyone by predicting.  There is always potential for things to get complicated.  Dr. Bob is a surgeon, so he would know better.

That seems a little odd a student in a hospital doing a amputation by herself 🙄
Title: Re: So Excited !!!
Post by: doc henderson on January 07, 2023, 05:30:35 AM
do it by herself is a relative statement.  Her supervisor told her to go ahead.  In med school training it is "see one, do one, teach one" for many things.  Most people requiring a digit to be amputated, have already done 90% of the "work" and just need the floppy rest of it to be off.  the rank goes med student 3rd, then 4th, then intern, then resident junior, senior, then attending.  After working a rotation your uppers know what you can do.  It was prob. not a revision (ortho or hand surgeon, Podiatrist, trauma doc) but just cutting the last thread of skin.  medics do them in the field, and paramedics trained in search and rescue.  I am sure it was fine!  Prob. one of the most exciting things she has done so far, and more to come.   8)

Sorry.  Been on the road all day.

If the appendicitis is straightforward....meaning that there is no rupture or abdominal contamination, the recovery can be pretty quick. For a young patient, who undergoes a minimally invasive procedure, they could be home the next day.  For us old goats, with potentially a more open procedure, he could be a few more days in hospital.  He'll be sore and moving gingerly for a week.

Post by: Magicman on January 08, 2023, 04:08:59 PM
OK Guys, at least I now know who my friends are.  :D

I am back at home so maybe I can sorta tell how this unexpected episode unfolded:  A couple of months ago I had an instance when my lower gut hurt but it went away so I dismissed it.  There was no looseness in the BM which sorta surprised me ??

Monday I got home about 1:00 and fixed myself a plate for lunch; small helping of white beans, small helping of black eyed peas, half of a baked sweet potato, slice of ham, and slice of cornbread.  I named it all off to sorta follow my thought process.  This was a very small plate of lunch.  About 2:30 I got a fairly fierce pain across my abdomen and my thought was that the beans, peas, & tater were having a conflict and making gas.  I drank a good slug of Coke hoping to make enough bubbles to burp it up.  Nothing happened so I sent a Rolaid down there with some water.  Still no burp but the pain was getting less.

Tuesday the pain was still there if I pushed in and nothing changed much during the day.

Wednesday it was still there so I called for a Dr appointment.  He suspected diverticulitis, but said that it could be appendix or even gall bladder.  The first CT scan that was available was Friday morning.  Friday afternoon the Radiologist called and said that I had acute appendicitis and to go to the hospital ER.  The Surgeon and Anesthesiologists came in to discuss surgery and when I told  Anesthesiologists that I had eaten lunch he immediately said it had to be 8 hours so the surgery was scheduled for Saturday.  The Surgeon was shocked at my age!

The surgery went well but the appendix was a story of it's own.  That thing had been growing unattended for 79½ years.   :o

The entire appendix should be small and smooth skinned as seen attached to the instrument above.

Mine was huge and had grown quite lumpy in it's old age.  The surgeon had to enlarge his belly button incision in order to drag it out.  It is also probably 4-5 times longer than it should have been.  :o  It has been sent to pathology.

I am sore big time and the Dr said nothing for 2 weeks and then he would discuss what I could do later.  I'll sent a text to my customers and discuss February-March.

Just heal up and follow orders which we know you can do. Which reminds me. I wish you guys would stop egging him on every time something like this happens. When are you going to figure out that he always rises to the occasion and outdoes whatever it was he done did before?
You can't beat the guy at a game he invented and spent between 7 and 8 decades perfecting. Geez, just admit defeat already.

Ugh, this is going downhill.........

My daughter had stomach pains on a trip 12 years ago with me. Took her to the ER, they said it was a UTI, gave her antibiotics and pain meds. Two days later, back to the ER, appendix had ruptured. Immediate surgery, a few days in intensive care, then a couple weeks to recover.

Glad yours was not as severe! Get well soon!

I've forgotten when, it may have been during the service. They discovered my Dad doesn't have one and it was never removed. He grew up in hard times, the best they figured is he made it through a really bad bellyache as a boy. Trivia that's taking the place of someone's phone number, I think that is what got Houdini

Yes @doctorb (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=10176) this is my concern now because obviously this ain't normal.  Understandably I have been doing much searching and reading.  If it is cancerous it's very rare and there are several different types so now I wait.  One good thing is that the surgeon said that it was "dangling in the breeze" and not attached to any surrounding tissue.

Actually it was hemorrhoids  :D.

The surgeon said no riding so the thought of just sitting here for two weeks don't sit too well with me.  I sent a message to my "whole house" framing lumber customer that is/was scheduled for January and rescheduled for February.  The others are no rush anyway.

Lynn-  I always have some concern for patients that get things at a time in life when it's not expected.  Yes, appendicitis can occur at any time, but it certainly is less common as we age.  It is most likely that you have had a chronic, recurring problem over the years which you probably just "pushed through". This could lead to an enlarged appendix.  You are correct, there is such a thing as cancer of the appendix, and it is exceedingly rare.  My bet is that the path report will come back with a lot of chronic inflammation and fibrosis (scaring), and no evidence of anything untoward.  BTW, the pathological evaluation of this tissue is probably done by now.  You were undoubtedly told that you would get the result at your first follow-up with your surgeon.  If you call the pathology department, they may have a mechanism by which you can see it sooner.  On the other hand, your doctor's office might be able to get this info for you.

Thank You for that response and you are correct, in that due to my nature, I would tend to "push through".  My nature is also to "lay it out" because if there is any way that my woes can be helpful anyone else, I am fair game.

The surgeon told me that I would get a call if there was a problem and if there was not, he would review everything with me on the 24th.

I am still quite sore but steadily improving.  I would still hate to think about coughing or sneezing.  :o

That always made me mad when I'd call for a report and they'd tell me that. I figured "Yeah, either there was no problem or you lost my paperwork." I never understood why they could not give good news over the phone. ::)

I am still quite sore but steadily improving.  I would still hate to think about coughing or sneezing.  (https://forestryforum.com/board/Smileys/default/shocked.gif)

Sounds kind of like a broken rib to me. :D My semi-scientific research indicates it takes 4 weeks from the time you break ribs till you can sneeze. ;)

Magic, I would make you very poor company right now. My wife has suffered a cracked rib twice- once from a fall, and once from coughing really hard when she was pregnant (the Dr said that pregnancy weakens the bones🤷‍♂️). Anyways, she would get upset at me because I would make her laugh, which really hurt. And I usually wasn't even trying. Just the things I say and do around her makes her laugh hard enough to be painful in that situation. I did see her laughing, with tears streaming down her cheeks from the pain. Hurt so good, I guess😂

This is the 4th day post surgery so understandably I have much less soreness, but I still don't want to cough.  :o

This sitting around reminds me why I continue to saw and will as long as I have a brain and one foot will go in front of the other.  Sitting is for chickens and ducks and I neither cluck nor quack.

there was an expedition to Antarctica.  one of the explorers got appendicitis.  the good news was one of the team was a doctor.  sadly, he was the one that got it.  they had to take it out under local anesthesia, and use books and direction from the doc to one of the regular guys.  It is not rocket science... just medical science!   :D :D :D

Reminds me of the joke about the guy who got drunk and fell on the front steps and broke the flask in his back pocket and cut himself. He knew his wife would be mad so he sneaked in, backed up to the bathroom mirror and bandaged his injured anatomy then quietly sneaked into bed. The next morning he woke up with a bad hangover and his wife screaming "You've been drinking again after you promised not to." He came in and contritely confessed but asked how she knew. She just pointed to the bathroom mirror that was covered in medical tape. ::)

Now I'm not taking a shot at your doc, but I kinda disagree with that approach, which I have witnessed many times over the years.
Test results get faxed from the hospital/lab (or emailed/made available) if the doc's office is connected via EMR.  That's all great.  These results often get flagged in The doc's office computer, or the fax just sits in an "In Box" awaiting scanning of filing.  So one can't be sure that these results that are constantly bombarding a doc's office get scrutinized as carefully as they should.  I'm not suggesting that you don't quietly rehab at home and find out this result on your first postop visit, but I can absolutely assure you that there are times when the first time the doc really connects these results to you is later, when you're standing right in front of him.  It's not optimal but it is the real world.  The EMR makes this better than the old "call the lab and let me check" system, but it's not 100% infallible.
Get better!

I was going to say the same thing.  What if it's not serious, but they need to refer you to a specialist, are they going to wait until you show up to discuss the options?  Or a quick phone call and the appointment is already in the works.

I always call them, if nothing else to make sure they got the results and have read them.  My doctor has a web portal where my test and lab results get posted as soon as they receive them.  I can log in and view them instantly, and more than once I've read them days before the office ever called to let me know the results.  They say the same thing, "if they are bad we will let you know" but why wait to tell me if they are good?  Are they too bust to make the phone call?  They are never too busy to take my credit card, and I paid for the tests, so I want to know what they say when they come in.  I also prefer to actually read the test results, it sometimes take me some time to decipher the nomenclature, but to me, it's more informative than the Dr. saying "It's fine, no problem."

Spot on Doc.   I once had an appointment with my doc and she was going over my blood work and was very concerned and so was I because it was bad in several ways.  We had been discussing it for about 10 minutes when she saw something in it that tipped her off that she was looking at  the wrong file.
And, back before I was diagnosed diabetic  my blood work showed that I was indeed diabetic but slightly and the doc wanted another check so I went back and they drew another test and I was told I'd be called if it had not improved, or whatever they were checking for.   Never got called.  Six months later at another appointment I was informed I was diabetic and had been.  They THOUGHT they told me.  ::) :D
I dropped 30 pounds and changed my eating and that improved the problem but geeze louise  it makes ya wonder.
As for the last, I agree, get better Lynn, real quick.

I was told years ago by the nurse at my DR. Office of 12 doctors, ultimately it is your health so make sure you know what is going on. call and make sure , get a 2nd opinion or 3rd, especially when it comes to surgery. A surgeon can do the surgery but it is up to you to do the rehab to make sure the surgery worked.

MM, it's really good to hear that you're getting better everyday, keep up the good work!
It's been said that humor is the best medicine, so here goes. . . .
A very large, 6 foot six, 480 pound man presents at his doctors office with severe abdominal pain. The doctor examines his patient and goes back to his desk and is pondering his findings.
The patient asks anxiously "so, Doc, is it my Appendix?"
The doc says "no, I don't think so, it's more likely to be your Table of Contents".
.
Way to go Magic, you've taken care of yourself and now your speedy recovery is your reward. 👍

Glad to hear you're coming along, MM👍

As far as those gnarly medical pictures go- in my different careers I've had to have a lot of different training. First Aid, OSHA, Logsafe to name a few. I don't hate it and always try to learn as much as I can, but the one part I dread is the trainers always feel the need to share pictures of accident scenes. The CPR/First Aid trainers will go on about different injuries they have responded to.

I've been on the scene of several bad accidents and emergency situations over the years. Bloody messes and I am basically unfazed at the moment, I kind of get tunnel vision I guess and just try to get people help. But something about sitting in those classes and describing injuries, looking at pictures of injuries, I start to get really squirmy. I usually end up getting up and leaving the room before we make it to lunch.

Pictures on here don't bother me, I can scroll past (although putting Magic's toe pictures in the Restricted area may be a good idea😁)

I still have my parts.  My brother was always coming down with tonsillitis.  They finally took them out when he was in 9th or 10th grade!

When I was in my late 30's I woke up early with a bad gut ache.  Figured it was gas but it just got progressively worse.  I stretched and when I pointed my toes it felt like someone stabbed me.  So I crawled out of bed and called the advice nurse.  Described the pain and she said to lay down and point my toes.  I said *heck* no!  Not doing that again!  Told me to come down to the ER.  Woke my wife up, packed up the kid and down we go.  They poked and prodded.  Don't remember if they took an MRI or anything.  But it went away and they sent me home.

From: Appendix | Definition, Location, Function, & Facts | Britannica (https://www.britannica.com/science/appendix)

"While the specific functions of the human appendix remain unclear, there is general agreement among scientists that the appendix is gradually disappearing from the human species over evolutionary time."

In MM's case the appendicitis was a slow evolution.

we have different qualities to each of us.  the reason for the average age being low like 14 years, is that you may have a bad one, (prone to obstruction and infection) or not.  It does serve in immune function but not missed if gone.  lots of lymphocytes and occ. the spot where a cancer such as lymphoma starts.  when it is inflamed after infection, it may be the source of intussusception in kids.  I had one kid in Hays who had his appendix out over the weekend and they found a very aggressive cancer (leukemia poorly differentiated) , and we had to get him to KU as the tumor load could double every 6 hours.  The surgeon had called the oncologist, and the mom wanted to be discharged back to western Ks waiting on dad who drove a semi over the road.  I got a call from the oncologist (he was my attending in school) who said he cannot wait, where the hell is this kid, fly him if you have to.  It can stutter for a while, and if missed acutely, it can rupture then you have stool organisms like e-coli in the pristine smooth sterile part of the abdomen, instead of the yukky inside of the bowels.
