Title: "What Did You Do Yesterday", Pics and video's please.
Post by: weimedog on February 06, 2023, 12:51:17 PM
Weather warmed up and I took a few project saws out to play. DIDN'T Intend to take on this project , was just going to do cookies. Fate intervened. :) Have FOUR Projects that need to be run:

394 to 395 conversion. I ran this saw logging last fall successfully. BUT had a hell of a time starting it so the mod is drilling a larger hole in it's decomp. Need to test that next video.

A pair of 572 "Bones" to running projects, this one I DID get into the video. A good runner. Basically squish set to .022", a Lil' Red Barn Popup, and a muffler mod. Has tuned into a work ready saw faster than most projects. Great saw and very repeatable and useful build concept.

550 First Gen saw. It's goad was to take "Bones" to running and once debugged to a "grenade" saw :)  THIS made the video as it's running and a few little things before tearing into it to turn it into a grendade saw :)

Clone g372xt....funny progression. Early on ditched the AM tank handle as OEM is the best option , even used and cracked was better than what came with that saw. SAME with the gaskets, ignition, and bar oil pump. AND after a few months the AM crank crapped. SO this saw has the g372xt cases, cylinder, intake parts inc. carb, muffler ( Modded ) and air filter. Oh yeah side cover. EVERY thing else are bits and pieces from dead early gen 372 X-torq's. Piston, Ignition, Crank, Oil pump, handle bar & PTO side cover. All OEM. IT is in the early stages of "debug" but runs really strong. Just stalls at idle as those early ones did. :)

If this post was yesterday I could have had a photo. Dismantled two 372's for parts. One was run over by a skidder, other one was seized. had parts strung all over the bench. All in a box now. Got a bunch of goodies from them.

What if, heaven forbid, it wasn't chainsaw related?  Still want photos?  We all get our daily chainsaw fix right!

What interesting thing you up to today. I scored a 181SE and another 480 today.

Wow I like the 181 saws.  But where are your photos?  You have been on a roll with these Husqvarna saw finds.  I reupholstered two zr 600 seats, put a new #50 drive chain on a John Deere model 49 snowthrower that is attached to an old 322.   Just maintenance on my stuff.  Did reload some 44-40 and moved firewood to restock my rack.

Why not post that stuff?

Todays find. 181 and a 480. The 181 had a missing starter rope so couldn't really check compression or spark. Met the guy in the parking lot at the grocery store so offered based on that. The 480 checked out good with compression and spark. $80 for both. The 181 is great. Put a starter rope in when I got home and crossed my fingers. Good compression and blue spark. It's all ther but a few minor things. This is the third one I came upon.

The 480 has an interesting full wrap on it. It has me puzzled a bit as the starter recoil and flywheel have a three pawl set up. I have three other 480's and two 380's and they all have 2 pawl set ups. The starter housing is the same from outside looking at it but is slightly different with the plastic spacer under it. Hmmm.

That is an interesting full wrap, is that "factory" or possibly from elsewhere? Looks to be well executed and also looks as if the bar nuts are accessible unlike the full wraps on ... say a 572 or 562 :)

Interesting also the history on that brand, they had piston port vertical layout cylinders since the 50's. Thing the A77 was the first to use the cylinder that's on the 480. I know the L77 has that basic top end as well. Interesting to me is how light and compact the A & L77 are, almost modern power to weigh. the 280,380, and 480 evolutions? Wonder how much is actually different across those years.

The 576 has been used a lot lately so I put it on the bench and took the covers off and cleaned everything out. Ground the bar rails and added a new rim and since everything else was up to snuff I spun up a new Carlton chain. After that my first gen 550 got the same treatment Sorry I took no pics of run of the mill servicing but no matter as I no longer post pics on this site any way.

They gained weight across the years just like we did. 480 seems unnecessarily heavy to me compared to the 77's and even the 280.

Won't help the 480. But I need to burn some calories along with burning some 2 stroke.  :D

The full wrap is legit from what I see. It's the second one I've found on a 480. One has some cushion wrapped around it.
The starter pawl thing is interesting though. Must have been some change in design along the way. As mentioned it has three pawls vs two on my other three 480's, flywheel looks different too.
The serial tag is unique from the others too having the black and silver. Oh well, always some new twists to figure out :D.

We have been getting new snow all week.  So on one of the John Deere 318's I use at the shop to move snow I put a used Audi seat motor on the discharge chute to control discharge height.  Been fun, but I enjoy snow and winter.
