Title: Sorce for cheap timber screws.
Post by: Joe Hillmann on August 18, 2023, 11:59:51 AM
I recently found out about a source for cheap, long screws.  And thought it may be worth sharing here.

When commercial roofing companies re slope flat roofs they remove thousands and thousands of long screws anywhere from 8 inches to 16 inches that just get thrown away.

If you give a commercial roofing company a call and ask they may be willing to set them aside for you.  I just got 32,000 mostly 12 inch  screws for $100.  Which is probably several lifetimes of building pole buildings and log structures for myself.

Are there different shear and holding requirements for timber vs flat roof screws?

Most likely.  It depends on how you use them.  I wouldn't hesitate to use them any place a pole barn spike could be used.  There are some areas where I would much rather use a proper timber screw.

I have been playing with them and proper timber screws to compare them,  in both cases they pull the joint tight and my drill starts to smoke before I risk stripping them or breaking them.

I think I would prefer to look for good quality, long lasting screws that will hold for the long term. I've learned my lesson finding cheap EDITED BY ADMIN just snaps off while driving, and the ones that make it corrode in the wood and don't hold anything after 5 years.
