Title: Which Gearmatic winch do have
Post by: jerrymidd on October 04, 2024, 07:32:48 PM
Hi All,
I just picked up a Garrett Tree farmer I think model 10 with a Gearmatic winch. I have a few questions which winch is it, and how does it work? It has 2 master cylinders one for in and one for out when you engage the PTO, how do you make it go free spool to pull out. The previous owner said it was stuck in the in mode and the sliders are right at the winch so I am scared to engage the PTO for fear of breaking something.
Any help would be great.

I can't help you with model.
If you look at your last pic, the line going to the centre of the cover, that is to your clutch, ("in mode".)
When you apply pressure to that line it activates the clutch to winch in.
The other line goes to that little cylinder on top right of winch in same pic. That one operates the brake. When you apply fluid to that one it releases the brake.
The brake is automatically applied by spring pressure.
It looks to me maybe your line to clutch has been modified with a "live swivel"? Thats a mod that some do to prevent fluid leaks.
There are videos online showing how the Gearmatic works, they are simple winches to work on. You will probably have to take that end cover off to free things up. These winches don't like sitting around, it causes lots of problems, which you are about to experience. When they are working well they are a good winch, but have caused many to question life choices when they don't work well.

I sold my TJ. It was to big for my intended use. But the coolness of it made it hard for me to sell. lol. I watched this little Garrett all summer on MP, could not take seeing it on there any more so I went and bought it. It will be the perfect size for my firewood gathering.

Thanks for the info. I will make sure to work on it in the morning when I have a fresh mind. Lol.

Can't you just take the line off and then it's fine if it's spooling in? If it's like the gearomatic 19 you can take the outside cover off on the band side and reconnect the line and as long as it's not under load you might be able to diagnose it a little bit.

I don;t know if you have found your answers yet as I havent logged on here for a while, if not it's a 8A, problem is most likely either the cylinder on top of the winch or the cylinder on the back of the control is stuck  if not that the brake band is stuck. to disengage the brake pull the lever in the direction of the line going to the winch,if there is hard resistance  check those cylinders first, working right the lever should pull all the way back .  The brake band without pulling the side cover off first try losing the tension adjuster, it's under the right side, you will see a hollow cylinder about 2 inches wide with 2 slots in it, make your self a tool to fit it and loosen t, if it moves loosen it  and tie the line to a tree and will break the rust, if it adjuster doesn't move you may have to pull sth side cover and soak it with penetrating oil, wintergreen oil from the Drug Store is the best penetrating oil you will find you  you would be smart to put kit;s in the winch control, pay attention because  both ends are different and do the brake cylinder also. Lots of Anti Seize on the Brake Band adjuster..
