Have been following this young lad in Canada building a timber frame home, and thought a recent video on his channel where he is doing a practice run preparing for making the different angle cuts on the roof trusses would be of interest, as I found it quite interesting.

beenthere - thank you for pointing out these videos. I smile when I watch them, because he is so young, enthusiastic and stereotypically rural Canada.
I have to guess that the work that he's doing gets a lot of input from an older generation in the family. Which is great, because it shows what you can do by combining experience and wisdom with youth and enthusiasm.
I've watched most, if not all, of his videos, starting with his wolf and coyote trapping days and being alone in the Saskatchewan wilderness off-grid.
Early on, he dreamed of building this log house and I thought he was doomed for failure, but would learn the hard way that he could not do it.
Never even an inkling that he had a mentor in the family or outside the family. The tractor with loader has been a "loaner" best I can decipher from his videos.
The one uncomfortable problem I have with this lad is his language. But his discussions about philosophy and life are pretty impressive, which leads me to think he is a self-taught log builder along with extensive reading and gathering information to develop his skills for gathering, preparing, and cutting the logs for his log house build.
There are many on this forum who exhibit similar skills, including but not limited to our Boss, Jeff. Have an idea, jump on it, and get it done while learning along the way.
I would question the depth of the notch he cut into the bottom chord of the truss. Not much wood left below it.

I was wondering that too, when I first looked at it I was thinking the bottom of the post would be shaped to fit the bottom cord.

Talking to the camera as if the 'boys' were right there with him. I can relate from when I built my log cabin, talking to myself, getting excited when a new technic worked, reading and buying books off of eBay as that was the 1st foray into the land of tech,(before tube) I would buy used books by B Allen Mackie, on log home building on eBay, not relising at 1st, that the same book had 13 editions and I was ordering them in different orders of printing. some of the technics had changed as the author found better ways to do something. I can look at my wall notches and see 4 different technics , from strictly chain sawing, then the chainsaw and axe, then just an axe and chisel, and then the grinder with a sanding disk.
Watching John build his cabin in the mountains has been a great inspiration to me.
Another video of this young fellow in Canada working alone on his timber frame for the gable end truss structure. Seems to have some real motivation and drive to figure out his cuts and assembly in winter conditions.
I'm impressed.
