30° here this morning and stars out. See frost in the gravel and grass with the yard light on. Rain coming this afternoon here then snow squalls into Thursday. Around 36° for a high.
60° and 43% RH in the shop, no fire there since yesterday morning. Once I got the fire going for an hr this morning I threw in a square piece of spruce and let it spark and grunt over that. :D
New month, so cleaned the flu in the house. Just fine soot raining down into the pale. ;)

As predicted 38° here, and yes, I touched the kindling off this morning and have a nice flicker. The forecast says that we will have a fire for the next 10 days. Yikes !!!

This week I came across a YouTube channel predicting a Blizzard for the East Coast then he said from January 7th to the 10th . . so I did some googling and no one else was calling for a Blizzard
Then I watched Ryan Hall YouTube channel and he said it's to early to call for a Blizzard that far in advance
Generally the local forecast is precise for 3 days ahead of time. . . it was a Clickbait thumbnail to generate more views ffcheesy

How is it that the weathermen have so much more technology, knowledge, and experience at there finger tips now than when I was younger, BUT, now they can't get the forecast right!

It hit a proposed long cold spell for us this morning. I'm guessing it won't get past 35 for the next few weeks and we are supposed to get the starts of maybe a foot of snow Sunday morning. We'll see how it goes. It was 60ish a few days ago.
"Weather underground" gets the weather quite right-on for me. I'm amazed that they do so well on the next ten days out.
Yup, that's what I use too. I've found their radar to be spot on more often than not when I can look at my location versus places nearby enough for me to see.
From my perspective it's been a 50/50 proposition. The temperature guesses are way off, especially the overnight lows. The daily highs are not too bad of a guess most of the time. I've seen forecasted weather change 4 x within a week and they usually get it worked out the day before. ffcheesy Today's constant wet snow was suppose to be just squalls. It's not adding up to much, but it's steady. Temperature is starting to fall, so I would be surprised to see more than the 1" they predicted by tomorrow. But I Just looked again at the forecast and now says heavy snow, so not even a good forecast for 24 hrs. I guess it all depends on when you catch the forecast, while your into it or 3 days before. It's a heck of a lot easier when it's happening already. :D :D Weekend shows lows near 5°F. I bet it don't go below 12°. Shows minus weather in mid January, I wouldn't count on that either.

Well, the 'heavy snow' turned to light snow within an hr of that last post and we never got even an inch. I can walk in casual shoes to the shop and not cover my toes. And it's 22°, not 11°. :uhoh: :uhoh: This 22° is suppose to be the high for the day and dropping below 20°. A little breezy out there. I'll probably push the scoop around after daylight to get that off before it packs down. ffwave
Was 58° and 43% RH in the shop this morning. Probably 85° in there now. Yesterday I had to open the door and windows to cut some small pieces of wood and drill some holes. Even then it was still in the 70's in there. That chunk of spruce really heated things up. :D
I have 26° and no above freezing temps for the next 10 days and no storms either.
We are back to making ice.

Chilly this morning, temp in the low 20s F with blowing snow--gusts of 30+ mph. But the sun--though very low on the horizon--is shining!
We got maybe an inch of snow on the grass over night, but real light and fluffy, enough that I used the leaf blower to blow off the car this morning instead of the usual brush or scraper.
A chilly 38°'s this morning but warming into the low 60°'s. Next week, is forecast for the low 20°'s and maybe a touch of (white) moisture. :shocked2:

Finally!!! We're getting some snow in NWMT!! There's about 10" on the flats and they say a few more coming tonight. It's 31 and slick as snot when we fed cows tonight! I wasn't sure I'd get to even put the snow blower ON this year! We're a couple inches ahead in the moisture department, just no snow yet.

I'm surprised, Montana is usually colder than here. Well winter is only a couple weeks old. We have had some mild days, but we've had some cold ones to, colder than all last winter in fact. By the 15th, looks like -20 weather if you can trust the guessers, I don't put much stock in guessing that far out, but that is a normal mid winter temp if it happens. Haven't seen that cold since 2008 and we had a lot more snow at this time back then, which was normal. But I have seen mild winters over 40 years ago. Down around 12°F this morning, but they forecast 4° for here. I would imagine in low places it's colder than here. I think it will go down that cold tonight, it's been there already this winter.
Shop was 56° and 35% RH this morning. No wood in the stove all afternoon or night yesterday. But a dry 56° feels a lot different than a high humidity 56°. In fact I could work just fine in the shop with a dry 56° and not be cold at all.

Plug the tractor in for a couple hours and that started like the 4th of July.
Put my chaps in the back door of the OWB so those are nice and warm and filled up the bar and chain oil on the saw with oil that is warm from the front door of the OWB.
It's 7:00 pm up here now and it's still 12° like this morning. And still snow squalls as I look out the window with the yard light on. Weather app says it's 6°, their thermometer must be down on a beaver pond. :D
Lunchtime, and it's 12C and overcast here. Probably sounds quite pleasant, except it's the middle of Summer, and there is fresh snow up on the Mountain this morning. That's about 10 miles from home, so not feeling the Summer vibe... :wacky:

We are supposed to get a fairly rare 8-12 inch snow today. Unfortunately when I got up it had barely dusted us so far so hopefully it is just a little delayed. May sound weird to some but a like to get a couple of good snows storms a winter to fully enjoy the 4 seasons. 2-3 storms is fine in Jan and Feb then Im good for spring to be here. This will be the first storm since I retired so was hoping to just sit back and enjoy with absolutely nothing to do but watch the Packer game and then Illinois basketball later.
We have continued to move south from Ill/Wi border to southern illinois over the years so I do miss getting a periodic BIG snow to have some fun in. Nothing better than a drive/walk around the country after a big snow. Little traffic or sound just nature.
Swampdonkey, it's been a nice, open winter here. We had no snow before last week. I was working in the meadow with the excavator until just the other day. Seems we get one of these every 10 or so years. I'll take it! Last year on the 13th of January, we saw -62 on the thermometer..... don't need that again!

Had a nice winter day yesterday. Ground frozen and no snow. Now under a winter storm warning and getting some snow. Expecting freezing rain later and then more snow. Below freezing temperatures are forecast for all next week. I've got plenty of wood and put the blade on my tractor yesterday so should be fine. Will be a miracle if the power stays on. I have a welder I can use for power but it drinks the gas.
had the forks on so after the track loader warmed up, I put the bucket on, but it had snow packed on the mounting plate. It would not latch so had to hit the important spots with a handheld Mapp gas Bernzomatic torch.
We might have an 1" of snow here after days of squalls, if you stretch the tape a little.

Snowed around 8" or so here, still going but mostly blowing and about 25 degrees. Backhoe made it a time and a half up the driveway, then stalled out, so it's stuck, but not in the way. I'll try some fuel additives later, if I can get to the store, in case I've got frozen lines or something. It's got non-gel stuff but no non-freeze stuff in it.
Low of 17 this morning and supposedly headed up to 28, we'll see. The is no snow in the forecast but I am looking at the radar and see that storm the gifted Austin and others is headed our way. The forecast here says no snow, and maybe it will slide just to our south or dry up before it arrives, but right now it looks like e may get a little of it. At least the winds are under 5mph for now.

Freezing rain last night on top of snow. Many power outages but amazingly mine stayed on. Now getting more snow and the wind is picking up. I'm debating on whether to get the tractor out and clean off my driveway before we get much more or wait. Usually better to get it off before it gets to deep. Only going to get colder for the rest of the week. I've got 1000' of driveway which is mostly on a hill so tractor works good going down but coming back up is sometimes a problem.
27 Deg over cast with steady 6 mph breeze. Still not feeling 100% after NYC especially after gong to the cold windy Patriots game yesterday. I keep looking out thinking I need to get moving but one more day will be worth it.
Temp just kept slowly dropping all day long. down to 17 now and solid overcast when the sun went down. Got the shop up to 65 today after a few days of warming fires. I think I'll plan a shop day for tomorrow. Kind of long range planning for me, usually I decide in the morning. ffcheesy But I am tired of cold feet and finger at the mill. I haven't worked int he shop to 'do' anything since before Christmas. Not sure what I will find, but there is plenty of choices. There is supposed to be some sunshine in the coming days which we haven't seen in a week pretty much.
Spent a couple hours cleaning most of the snow off my driveway and by the time I was finished my fingers were numb. Knew that it wasn't finished snowing but if I let it get very deep I can't tell where the driveway is exactly and I didn't want to run in the ditch or over the hill. I have a blade on the back of my tractor and I push snow going backwards so I don't tear my gravel up to bad. Got a couple more inches so I'll have to go back tomorrow but it won't be as bad. I don't really need to go anywhere but you never know when something might happen and I would have to be able to get out.

This was a very nice light fluffy snow for us. I didn't do much shoveling until this morning and it moved nicely.
I have turf tires on the tractor (and it's gasoline) but I'm wondering with the backhoe trouble I seem to have, if I should get some chains for it, put on the blade and park it in the garage for the winter. Seems like if I can get it started it's likely to keep going and be much easier to move if it doesn't keep going. I like the angle on the blade too, for snow moving.

Well another cool day here again today, high of 28 and a low if 14, bu the wind, it was a whippin' all day! Gusts of 20+ here and there means it wicks the heat off the shop building pretty quick. But I have been keeping the thermal mass up the last week, if not really 'heating the shop' and so today it was pretty easy to get it up to a nice 65° working temp. No issues. Down in the teens again tonight, and another shop day tomorrow. I might get back to the mill on Friday when it warms a tad.

Do you think it's wise to run wood with shellac on it through a planer or will it gum the rollers? :huh? Shellac doesn't seem to set hard like varnish. I think I have a jug of EZ strip some place in the shop. Better safe than sorry. I won't put any back on the wood I am removing it from, just rub some linseed oil on after I'm done machining. ffsmiley

Snowing again up here tonight. Have been trying to keep snow from getting to deep on my hill but being it's solid ice underneath the snow it's hard to work with. I keep a few tons of limestone chips in a pile which I can sprinkle on the ice if it would quit snowing for a little bit. I'm a little gun shy after wrecking my car on this hill last year. Those hilly driveways are nice in summer and fall, tricky stuff in winter. You guys have more snow than we do, We have maybe 2" here. The 4-lane highway has no snow banks at all. Less snow out closer to the river, maybe 1" if you stretch the tape. It's been plenty cold here though, but the last two days was in the 30's. I think that is over with now though. But not severe cold either. I still would not want to spend a night in a walled tent in it.
24° here at this early hour and the wind finally stopped howling. Man, it was 88° in the shop, the fire was out pretty much and I had to open the windows to do some sanding on a couple of maple sticks. I hooked the sander up to my Festool vacuum. Had to get a new Dewalt 1/4 sheet sander. I like those better than an orbital for sanding sticks.

Another 4" of wet snow last night and the power just went off. Cleaned the snow off my welder and hooked it up.Now to get out and clean the hill off again. This is supposed to be the end of the heavy snow for a few days but not the cold weather so might as well get at it.
22° this morning. Weather man called for sun and 30°. I can't see either one of them happening here. In fact, I would say snow squalls will be moving in today and for several days again. Kind of looks like something happening at a distance. It was a full moon, but it was overcast, the yard was still not dark like a cave though.

We hit 33 yesterday for a high in the afternoon. I got the track loader and got all the ice I could and then salt. Most of the drive is black pavement and it melts easy with sun being absorbed by the mass. now cold again for a few under 30. both my wife and daughter have had falls going to the mall that was not adequately cleared.

18° out there this morning. Still looks squally. You'd think we lived on a huge lake. Closest lake to us is 10 miles off to the south, Williamstown Lake. Not very many lakes at all in this county.

Not much snow here. The field is white, but just barely and that was from a small storm on Sat.
The Androscoggin River has froze over, been that way for about a week now, at least.
Last year it only froze over for no more then 3 days and then it would warm up and rain.
It was 7° this morning at three am when the phone rang. I was pretty cold by the time we were done. Supposed to get to the mid to upper 30's today.
I think we will see some of Al's cold tomorrow morning. Then a thaw coming Friday and Saturday, in the low 30's. Then drop even colder on Monday than it's been.

The needle never budged all day, stayed on 18°. Dropping now though. More squalls today. Saw some snow buntings eating weeds (seeds) in a field and a goshawk was hunting for grouse. It crossed the road and darted into the firs. Then it came out and it came flying down the road at me until he focused in on what he was looking at. ffcheesy I've seen others hunt in the exact same spot and I do see grouse there. One day a few years ago I saw one up in a fir tree with a grouse in his claws, same place. So the kill was pretty fresh.
Also saw a coyote in a field but over on another road about 4 miles from here.
No relief here. I've had one day here when the ground was frozen with no snow on it. Cold here with more snow heading here Sunday. Supposed to be even colder next week. Stove has been eating the wood. I feel like a engineer on a steam train 🚂
15° here and still squally this morning. Houlton, Maine is 30 miles south of here and they were predicting 0 to 5° this morning. Quite a bit warmer than that here. I think the constant cloud cover keeps it from getting real cold here.

The photo shows a normal working day with bit of crosswind. Today, all you can see is the utility poles, everything else is white on white.
If you can't see where the road is, you could already be in the ditch.

We started getting some sun here by 10:00 am, brightest day we've had in 2 weeks. Still lots of cloud cover though. Not crystal clear by any stretch. 25° here now.
They are now putting out an advisory that we may get up to 10" of snow Sunday night into Monday.
Warmed a tad today up to freezing for 5 minutes. They say we have 3-6" of white stuff coming Sunday into early Monday. Should be maybe 35 tomorrow and we have a couple loads of firewood to get out and some special boards to mill. The deep freeze is coming Monday for several days, so we'd also like to get some stuff milled up to use in shop work through the really cold days for Bill's guys. We want to build up some kind of rack to hold 1/3 cord firewood bags while we fill them off the processor and a receiver box for sawdust coming off the mill blower just to keep the sawdust dry. So I am going to push it a little for a couple of days, but I have a couple of books to read on those really cold days after I do my plowing. ffcheesy
Nice day here for a change. Sun came out and got up to 40 . Still not enough warm weather to melt the ice on the road going out the hollow. I put wood ashes on my driveway and have been keeping the worst of the snow off of it so it's melted off pretty good. Supposed to rain tomorrow and then snow Sunday before going into a deep freeze next week.Rain on top of ice is going to make it really slick for awhile.
Bill, now that you have a planer, you have a new resource. When the ice gets bad here I have been known to throw those planer chips out on the ice from traction for feet and tires. They seem to disappear in the spring and if they get tracked in the house are better than ashes. What happens is the sun warms that top layer of ice during the day and at night it freezes the chips into it and works pretty well. Down at the sawmill I use chainsaw chips, they work better than sawdust and provide grip. I do know tomorrow I will have my yax trax on while working at the processors. The ice isn't bad, but that plastic matt under the grizzly bars is slicker than goose guts. ffcheesy
Thanks Tom, I'll give that a try. One thing for sure is the planer puts out a lot of wood chips and between the house and the barn where I keep my tractor it's slick as glass. I've got several boards I need to plane tomorrow anyway before the cold spell comes Sunday. Falling down seems to hurt a lot more than it used to. I've been saving large bags from the feed store where my wife gets her bird seed. Now I'll put them to good use by using them to put my shavings in.

I just planted some seeds in the grow tent this morning, radish, lettuce, basil, rosemary, and onions. Onions and rosemary take a long time to grow from seed. I set those outdoors in spring. I eat everything else out of the tent. The earwigs outside in summer ruin any lettuce you try to grow. Keeping a low fire to feed heat into the grow tent with the furnace fan on manual.

35 and I can see the moon, rain last night.
Well yesterday the high was 35 and the low was 24, pretty fair working conditions. It started snowing around noon and persisted most of the afternoon, but very little took hold, maybe 3/8". It was elevation dependent and just 50' lower in altitude from our road was mostly just slush. 100' lower was rain, but our road was white and needed some attention.
The forecast yesterday said we would get 4-8" tonight, but try as I might I could see no systems that looked to have to potential to set up for a storm affecting us. But the radar doesn't tell all, so maybe. But this morning they have 'refined' the forecast and now say 2-4". I do see a system headed our way that might do this. Supposed to start late this afternoon and end around midnight. So tomorrow morning we will see what we get. Then the cold starts to slide in, 10° tomorrow morning and 3° for Tuesday morning, staying cold and dry all week. It's not supposed to go above freezing until next Sunday.
We shall see.
The fog has lifted, and the sun is coming out. I have 34°. and some sun until about noon

Once I got to shovelling this morning I could see that barely an inch stuck, deeper spots was wind driven, and not all that deep. It's going to be mostly ice unless the warm day melts it down to gravel. There was some hints of sun here, but nothing of significance in that department. We had some fog, which is gone now.
We got 4 inches of snow last night after an all day rain yesterday. I had my driveway cleaned off pretty good except for a few patches of ice so after the snow slacked off about noon I got the tractor back out and tried to get the worst off again. Would have waited until tomorrow but it's supposed to be brutal cold tomorrow with a stiff wind and I think I would rather stay inside.
Just got home about an hour ago truck said -7°.....

We got about 4-5" out of this storm looks to all be fluffy stuff and I will have to do a good cleanup because none of this is melting off for a while. We won't see above freezing until Sunday. Clear skies make it colder, but at least, for now, there is no wind, that makes it mis4erable.

We got 5-6in starting around 7 last night, through this am. It drug so!e cold air in with it, 18 now
7F here and not supposed to warm up much more. Sunny skies though which makes me feel a little better. Going to have to work on my hill a little as we got another 1" of snow last night if my old tractor will start. Would like to go to the store after while although I don't have to.

Wind is picking up since the sun came up. It was calm and beautiful when I first went out at 7:30 or so, now 10mph is enough to make it a bit uncomfortable. It has made it up to a balmy 19°.
But that helps set up a weird phenomenon of conditions that only occurs here rarely. The Dike road that goes along the east end of the reservoir here runs north south. I pretty much have to use that road to get anywhere. Austin knows it. Anyway, the prevailing wind is from the west and between that road and the mountains is 20 miles of open reservoir. Lest year it never froze over at all, the year before just for a short time, but it is frozen closed now. When that happens and we get a dry powdery snow like yesterday, the wind from the west will blow snow down that 20 miles of ice and it runs up the berm then makes a vortex and drops on the west lane of the road. In 10 mph winds it's just annoying as the one lane gets more and more crowded out during the day, eventually needing plowing. At 20mph it becomes dangerous because visibility drops to zero and the drifts can be 3' deep in spots. If you are driving too fast you have no time to adjust when you come up on a drift. If you drive too slow and hit a drift, you are stuck. Over 25mph wind it becomes another world and the snow will pile up faster than a plow running back and forth on that one mile stretch can keep up with. I just went out for milk and with the 10mph wind we have now, it is at the annoying stage.
About 10 years ago we had a personal injury auto accident call right in the middle of the Dike in the middle of the day. It was a beautiful but cold day, not a cloud in the sky but the wind was at 25-35 mph. Turned out the visibility on that road was zero again and one driver headed south didn't have much of a lane left to work with and couldn't see the lines on the road. The other driver, headed north, just couldn't see anything but the guard rail right next to him and he just focused on that. He didn't see the southbound car half in his lane until 2 seconds before impact.
The reason I remember it was because I was driving the ambulance that day and the first due crew on scene shut the road down right away and let no other vehicles in, including our rigs and PD. With visibility at zero, windchill at 25 below and impossible working conditions, the safest thing to do was stuff the victims into the first due truck and get them out of there, so they delivered them to the ambulance. Then we could allow just the working crews to get in and do their thing. After cleanup, we shut the road down until the next day when they could clear the snow. It's a very weird set of conditions.
I came through there one morning about 3am returning with the Fire Engine and not only could I not see past the end of the hood, I lost total track of where I was along that road. Any additional lighting was counterproductive (blinding) and in fact I turned off the headlights and just used the running lights to show me the guard rail. I did flip on the emergency lights on the roof just so somebody MIGHT see me, but they were really annoying. I made to the end of the road at 5 MPH and I think it may have been the longest mile I ever drove. :wink_2:
Sometimes the weather can do weird things.
First year we moved into the new house was lots of snow. One lane up by here on the main road for 2 miles. It's a ridge here and fields either side for a mile. When the wind blows it blows and carries lots of snow. 12° here and wind driven squalls all day long, peeks of sun.
More like usual.... we hit -22 for a while this morning. Not that I really like it, but it's more usual. It looks like that's the end of below 0 for the foreseeable future in the forecast....we'll see.

I don't think we've had more than 3" of snow all month. We just get squalls, no big storms.
It was 54° and 30 % RH in the shop. No frost around the seal of the overhead door. That's a pretty good seal. But I'm thinking back at potato houses and them overhead doors. No way they don't frost because humidity is high in there so potatoes don't turn into raisins.

I slept in this morning because I had a disturbed night and because I could. Woken up by the neighbor, who has not yet cleared out his snow running around on his ATV or something doing donuts. Whatever.
-3 here this morning and we have +12 now. Looks like the snow won't be leaving for a few more days. This is the longest we've had snow on the ground for several years. Staying busy putting wood in the stove and keeping the driveway cleaned off.

15° this afternoon along with some squalls spitting some snow at us. :snowball:
Bone dry out there in the shop again and everything opened up. Drilled some, sanded some. The Festool vac is great on the 1/4 sheet sander. No dust flying through the air, just dry dry air. Sander has a hole punch plate to punch the sand paper so the vac can suction the dust. Dewalt brand. For this type of sanding I like those 1/4 sheet ones and not orbitals.

This our 2nd accumulation this year, this is not normal for Augusta, GA. Of course everything is shut down, these people around here have a problem driving in the sunshine.
Well take heart Arnold, that too shall pass pretty quickly. Your temps down there in general will make quick work of it. Up here, we had about 4" little inches on Sunday and it was enough that needed plowing Monday morning. Temp hasn't made it to 20 yet this week and here it is Wednesday now and my driveway and yard look as if I just finished plowing 5 minutes ago. No meltage whatsoever and I can still see my plow tire tracks as clear as a bell. The only 'improvement' is that the snow on some blacktop and slate softens in the sun then re-freezes into ice. It's annoying when it comes, but then melts away in a day or do. But when it comes, stays and only changes to ice, it's a bit different.
Just bring up some more wood. ffcheesy

This month, January has been the coldest we had for a while. Not many hours above freezing.
Not much melting going on.
First time I see the little brooks frozen around here in years. The beaver ponds have always froze and the main river. Ice in the main river has been a lot thicker ice than you might think to. When it goes out, even in those mild winters it's several feet thick on the head pond. Teens and twenties will still make ice, lots of it, just not as deep at -30, but still respectable.
8° this morning. We did hit into the 24° mark yesterday with the sun being out and no wind. Snow was melting on the steel roofing to. Was a nice winter day. So much for the weather guesser temps. ffsmiley

34 here but after being acclimated, I am outside in a heavy long sleeve Carhart. getting a cord of wood up to the house. to refill for the next cold snap. still piles of snow on the ground, and ice on the street where the trees provide shade.
What is it about the long sleeve carhartt? Man them things are warm. I think it's 50/50 cotton and polyester but I don't know materials, I just know that those shirts make me sweat.
Downright goofy here. It's 40 below for a few days, warms up slow for a couple days then out of the blue it's above freezing for a couple of days. Today it is up to +7C in the sun and by Thursday we are forecast for -30s again. I don't start up if its -25C or below anymore, until later in February when we get more daylight. Too much wear and tear and generator time for a short day's work. About 55 years in the Yukon, NWT, northern BC and Alberta so I'm getting used to cool weather but so many ups and downs are just weird.
Seesaw on the temps here too.
But for the most part it's at least 15 for a high.

Lots of wind here today, still howling, out of the SW and it did just touch 30° and fell back to the 20's. I had the big heavy wool coat on and wool hat with pull down tabs you can fasten under your chin, because I thought it was going to be a cold wind. Nope, and it was a bit on the warm side even in that wind. I was prepared for the arctic circle. ffcheesy
I came in from cutting some firewood and noticed how the wind was warmer too then a week ago.
Well we got blessed with a high of 38 today, but with a 20 mph wind it didn't feel warm doing outside chores. Temps will be declining in the coming days. Pretty easy to get the shop up to 60 for working on the wife's car today, so I'm grateful for that. The snow from a week ago is still laying around, but evaporating off the driveway and some other surfaces. Ground is still froze good.
We've had snow on the ground for 22 days straight but it's slowly warming up. Bad thing is mud will replace the snow. I don't like working outside in either.

Temp is not gonna rise today, high today was 35 at midnight. We've some good wind, averaging around 20-25 now. We had a heck of a squall line come through with near whiteout conditions for a half hour or so. Dropped only 1/2" and gone now. Maybe a littel more coming, but not much. The wind is the big detriment today. Sunny right now....sort of. :wink_2:

Still snow on the ground here on the cold side of the hill but it got up to 50 and felt like a heat wave. Got out and washed my truck and put it up for awhile. Hopefully I can drive the car for awhile. It's a lot easier to park at the store and easier on gas.

I feel much better today, but when I cough that causes some pain from the throwing up, I did the other night. That is hard on the body. But at least it was not coming out at both ends at the same time. I can't remember the last time I have felt like this and called out for work.

Our 3 plus week of dry has finally ended. About 4 days ago the prediction was 4 days of light rain, very high snow.
Fast forward today rain started early will continue through Sunday morning. Next storm is colder with rain through Thursday with a couple feet of snow up above 5,000'. Another storm coming in Thursday night. Should get one quarter of our annual precip in the next 7 days.
That video has it about right. We never followed their forecasting at all around here. Most of the time you couldn't tell if it was for Halifax, NS or Fredericton or even Edmonston, NB, but you knew it wasn't our forecast. The weather changes 50 miles north of Fredericton, many times 70 miles, we're 100 miles from Fredericton or Edmonston. ffcheesy ffcheesy

I am 'working' this weekend at "The Hoot" doing EMS for the festival. Normally I stay in residence, but as I get older I am coaming home to sleep in my own bed at night and go back in the morning. I just got home and hour ago (12:30am) and Leaving the property I never got over 8mph, once I hit the town road I couldn't exceed 15 MPH, and on the county road I could almost get up to 20mph. Freezing rain all afternoon and evening, the roads are 'not so good'. Everybody cautioned me about leaving and offered me places to sleep. But I know these roads and just took my time. I lost it a few times, but at 15mph it is much easier to recover than at 40. :wink_2: Yeah, 70 would be nice, but the ice sculptor that is working tomorrow would not like it. I talked to him before I left and he was smiling because it shou not got over 25° tomorrow. He always makes something really nice and pretty big (outside) which takes him about 4-5 hours to carve. Sunday afternoon we put it in the freezer then bring it out for the summer Hoot in August and stand it in front of the Saturday night campfire and watch it melt.
We don't mind the cold and even rely on it, but ice is something we never want.
Still 10° and I don't think the thermometer will move much away from that. :snowball:

What kind of trees you cutting in a swamp? Can't be oak and maple is it? Or are you crossing a swamp? I usually get close to 9 cords. I have 7 at the house and 1.5 at the shop for next winter. I burn wood 9 months. I been pulling a few maple from the woodshed that was cut in July, so I'll cut two or 3 buggy loads this spring to fill that up. Three 16" aspen will fill the void. :D

The tractor has no problem in the fields so now cutting firewood along the edge of one of the fields.

Well!!! Ol' man winter snuck in last night!!! A balmy -40 this morning, and we're at -7 already tonight. I'm glad we don't have any calves yet. It's supposed to be mid 30's again next week. It's been an awful nice open winter so far, and we really need one good cold snap, to help with bugs next summer, so I'm not gonna complain! I've got a nice warm paint booth to work in for a couple days. ffcool

Was working in the shop shaving down some sticks in the planer, then sanded them and rubbed some linseed oil on them. Hung them to dry behind the stove. Was around 80° when I left, but I bet it got to 90° because I added some wood to a bed of coals. And that would be a real dry heat, around 15%. So them sticks are cured I would think. ffcheesy Stars and moon out now. Suppose be sunny all day Wednesday. 10° here now.

Snowed all day yesterday and then turned to rain. Most of the snow is gone or will be today. Dreary weather. Makes a lot of mud . At least I don't have to plow snow off the driveway.
The highway was packed snow and at these cold temps that's like ice. Saw some cars off the road and where a 4x4 pickup must have went off and got back on. One lane was semi-clean, the pass lane was iffy. People think they can drive like summer with SUV's with All Season Radials and pickups with mud and snow tires, no studs. Never fails.

Freezing rain right now. I hate that stuff! :veryangry: 28 degrees when I got up this morning, 30 now. It snowed about half an inch last night, raining now and ice is forming on the trees and everywhere.
Through the night we got about 1 1/2 inch of snow, then stopped, woke up this morning (7:00) to freezing rain and then switched back to snow for about 45 minutes, now it's very light freezing rain again!
Hard for any weather guesser to hit this one right for us. We wound up between two systems moving ENE and got a piddly little 1/4" of snow out of it last night with temps in the higher 20's. This morning it totals maybe 1/2" but warmed up a little. Now we have a very fine rain coming down. You can't see it, you can only feel it, it's so fine. It's 33 now and basically we have 1/2" of white slop. Temp is supposed to hit 40 today. Because of the warmth, I thought I would go grab a couple more trees this morning, but that rain is discouraging. So this morning I am reading and will go out with my plow this afternoon to scrape the slop off before it re-freezes. After today it's supposed to drop back down and stay well below 30 for the next week or so with maybe some more snow in the forecast.

If we have more than 3" by dark, I might do a quick sweep to lighten the load tomorrow.

24 degrees now and heavy sleet. 4:30 yesterday afternoon the storm started with very light snow. This morning about 5" on the ground and the sleet is coming down hard with a stiff northeast wind. The sleet was stinging my face while walking out to the barn to check on the chickens and collect the eggs.
They are calling for rain and freezing rain most of the day with a high near 34. Then tonight high winds with possible gusts up to 50mph and tomorrow gusts up to 55mph.

Started yesterday around 2pm. We have about 6" of snow that came down since then with about 3/16 of crust on top and a nearly invisible mist/rain coming down now. The resultant combination is very dense and will make for tough plowing. The question is: wait until it's done, or plow it off now? If I plow now and more rain comes, it will put a fine glaze coat on everything I cleared. That's fine for a bar top, but not for a driveway. ffcheesy

I think this is the first winter living here since 2000 that the driveway has not melted. Been ice and snow all winter.

About 25C, and 90% humidity, with some light rain. Actually quite pleasant. Clouded over so temp and humidity wont drop much overnight.
But you see why we don't dry wood to 8% here, It's nice and warm but humid as heck.
11" so far, going by the pile between the porch and the wood pile and my 'dip stick'. That's not a drift, but straight down snow. You wouldn't know it looking at the steps, maybe 2" on them. Wind isn't much yet, but later today I think she's going to be a tundra snow blast. :snowball: :snowball:

Best we can dry wood out in the air under cover is 16% here. Gotta stack in a heated space to get 12% MC and constant heat, not up and down. In winter the flux is much narrower, but Sept to Nov it can be 80% RH when cooled down in a space and 20% when heated up. In winter 15-30% RH between heating and cooling.
I might have got 2 more inches of snow after I did the driveway last night.
I have 14° and only a high of 16 today and the wind will blow again.

What a Mess! Got driveway plowed late yesterday afternoon. I wanted to wait till the rain stopped before plowing so the driveway wouldn't ice up. Didn't work. Driveway is iced up and much of it is covered with drifting snow.
18 degrees now and the wind is howling and the snow is blowing. I was outside a few minutes this morning and was very happy to get back in the house. The wind sure does make the fires burn fast! The woodstoves are cranking!

well it finally stopped raining well after dark last evening but the wind picked up and did a good job of blow drying the driveway. I thought we were in pretty good shape. But overnight that wind really picked up and some of the gusts woke me up. This morning I see a million chunks of ice, blown off the trees littering the driveway and frozen in place. I don't see any trees down, but I hear a of of FD calls on the radio in surrounding areas. Power is on, so all good. We are going to stay in this condition, more or less until Saturday. Ice everywhere.
Still snowing a fine snow here, and wind picking up. I'm going to do some snow blowing in a few minutes after the bread is cooked. ffsmiley
I never got the blower out yet. My cousin pushed the bulk of the snow out and widened out the mouth of both entrances. I'm waiting for this wild wind to end before I even bother. :uhoh: :uhoh: :snowball: Snowing is about done, even had some sun in the windows.

Well, we wound up with about a foot more of snow over the weekend. I've been blowing snow all afternoon. Got most of it done, but blew the chute off the blower just before I got done. Moved all the cows into the calving pasture in front of the house, as we started calving on the 14th. A cow that was born on Valentine's day 6 years ago, walked over to the same tree that she was born under and had a nice big heifer calf on her birthday!
It was up to 28 today, and supposed to top out in the 40's by midweek, so I'm trying to get all the snow blown to a spot of good drainage. Right now, it's over my knees, so looks like a mess coming!!

Well, I got the drive way all cleared this morning. Still blowing a bit out there, but not in the drive way much. Looks like we might get to 12°.
Road from Mars Hill to Fort Fairfield, Route 1A was closed today. Was drifted over. On the other side of us, on the 560, a snow plow was off the road in a snow drift yesterday. On the high end of the road on the north end, there's barely a tree on either side of the road up there. All open potato fields. Pretty much like that up by me. Once you leave the cedar swamp down the road from here, you're in a whole new world. Neighbor had to get his blower to make a path in front of his wife's Suburban to get back home. No idea what that woman was on the road for on a holiday and in a blizzard to boot. Them SUV's ain't what you think they are. :D

OK, now you're killing me. Best thing about our weather was that it hit 26 at the heat of the day and the wind stayed (mostly) under 20mph. But we have ice everywhere and walking can be hazardous. Of course, the bugs are not really bothersome.
We reached 24° here and I just checked and it's still that at 7:00 pm. Going to see some 30's next week by Tuesday afternoon.

We hit (does some maths) ~82F a few days back, and tropical humidity (it rained).
Only got to 77F today, so just pleasant, and low 70s forecast for the next few days.
At least we got a couple of days of light warm rain (~1.5"), which the local farmers were starting to need.
70's weather is nice working weather in summer. Once you adjust to the humidity after a long winter of dry heat, it becomes tolerable. First part of our summer wasn't that hot, and we had lots of rain. But August got dry late in the month and all we had until about Christmas was mist when it rained. That doesn't soak in. An hour of dry sun and you have sand again.

8° here this morning. On the whole I'd rather be in Costa Rica too, but I have a lot of logs to harvest and now is the time it needs to get done. You guys have a great visit down there and don't waste a minute of it.
Clear blue skies, headed for low 20's today, low wind forecast, it's a near perfect work day ahead but I could do without the ice that is everywhere and an inch thick in my woodyard. Only 10% of my logs cut so far.

Well, we went for a drive and went down a dirt road they plow. Well, it was getting quite muddy on that road. Never would of believed it was that warm to turn that dirt road to mud. Came home and looked at the thermometer, 32° today. There is a stiff NW breeze to. Plow has been on the road moving drifts.

Could see a great big bright star, Venus, last night in the west. Jupiter is suppose to be visible to, but it was supposedly straight over head, and me in my slippers was not walking down the driveway in snow to see it. :D

Tuesday-Thursday is suppose to be like spring, rain Tuesday. Then temp drops Friday again. We don't get much melting until mid March here. Could be 40 degrees for 3 days and hardly notice a drop in snow. That's because mostly there is no sun out on them warm days. If there was sun out with mild the snow drops noticeably.

Was 40 when I crawled in bed about midnight, 38 when I got up at 5:30am and right now, 53 showing. It started raining at about 3:30am. It's a mess right now..you wont get in to our place without 4x4. Supposed to be this way all week and then get warmer by the weekend, so hopefully it'll drain off a bit. Our snow has gone from above my knees to just above my ankles in a couple days. Someone said they saw a Robin about 25 miles from here, so maybe things will continue. Road load limits go on here March 1, so everyone is getting busy, moving machinery home and shutting jobs down.

Yeah, there is the rub! I was thinking the same thing today. The issue here is the ground is really frozen pretty deep right now and what melts on top (and I have puddles all over now) can't soak in. So it will re-freeze in a nice clean slick sheet when the temps drop. Even on the lawn it is barely soaking down.
Of course, one the ground thaws, the it can soak down and make better mud. Now that I wrote that, I am not sure which is better. :uhoh:
Terrible SW wind tonight, so if it does rain some the snow will settle a bit. Depends on the rain, if it is just misty, or the heavy kind. :wink_2:

Melting a little bit around bare gravel here, but snow banks aren't melting, but snow is getting packy. No running water, so not much for any melting except on roofs. The snow slid of the shop last night.
Well for the first time in a long time, it did not freeze last night. Low was 35° and it's 41 now. Wind is calm, that's nice! and it melted all day yesterday, but the ground won't let the water soak in much...yet. Solid overcast for today with a 40% chance of some precip in the afternoon. Could it be an earlier season change? One thing I notice is some sap run in the trees I'm cutting.

It hit 52° today! ffcool The radar has shown rain over us for the past 5 hours but none is hitting the ground. Dew point is way too low for that. It just finally passed us anyway. Today I stopped wearing the lined pants that have been part of my 'uniform' for the past 3 months. Back to double font logger jeans. I took the hoodie out of the lineup yesterday too. I was even thinking of switching to t-shirt instead of long sleeves, but it will cool a tad tomorrow, so I hold the line on that one for now. :wink_2:\
Some of the water is soaking in, but not enough. The frost level is down at around 1-2" so just mud on top. Still, the ice is receding so that's good. Ice with a coating of water is pretty tricky. It's also challenging getting the buggy through the woods in that corn snow. Steering is more of a 'suggestion' rather than a direction. Bumped a few trees today when the buggy had a different idea of which way to go. 4WD was just a little helpful. There were a couple of times I thought I would get to see how well that winch works. ffcheesy

Just had my heavy cotton button up shirt today and no coat. I think we got to 44° here. The driveway gravel is mostly exposed now, will be all melted by morning I suspect. Never had any ice on it except freezing and thawing the last 2 days, so didn't take much to melt. Those bare spots in the field, that the wind created during them storms, really show today. But they never had more than a skim of snow on them. Not much rain expected, highest probability around midnight. Still 40° here tonight.
Not going to stay mild long up here, be cold again by the weekend for 2 or 3 days, highs in teens, and then warming through next week, rain mid week.
My buggy doesn't come out until May. :D

Tuesday night at 11 pm I left home (NC) to travel to MA on a business trip. Got there around 1:30pm Wednesday afternoon.
Got up Thursday morning to 1" of snow on the van. I had to use my snow brush. First time in three years for that.
Drove to Fredericksburg, VA to meet customer. Rained until mid CT. Then just cloudy all the way to VA.
From VA home got rained on several times.
I got home at 10pm, long drive up and back over 1600 miles.

I have a couple of boxed sets of SNL in the early years. Some of those guys crossed over from SCTV, but I don't think Akroyd was ever on SCTV, and Candy wasn't on SNL either as a cast member. Martin Short had one season. Rick Moranis, John Candy and Eugene Levy were just guests and Levy only appeared when his son was invited on in 2021. They're all Canadian comics. Temp dipped to 14° here by daylight. No wind. Got the drive way cleared and a fire on in the shop. Cleaned furnace and pipes in the house yesterday, wouldn't fill a cup full of soot. Clean, hot burning, aspen and fir wood. I have a morning fire in the furnace, but nothing will be added for 8-9 hrs. ffsmiley

Silly warm in SW Yukon Territory for about a week now, which in one way was good for me to complete some driveline repairs. 0 F right now and forecast to get a little above freezing today. Similar temps expected for a couple of days then slowly turning back towards cooler and more normal. March definitely came in like a lamb!

Then wet for the next 3 days. Fine by me, helps the melting. Might see the gravel again by Friday. Then colder. Doesn't look like much sap weather here for 2 weeks. We never tapped here until mid - late March in my younger days. I'm in no hurry for heat and flies. I hope this cold winter sets back the horse flies, been bad last two summers. It has been quite a dry summer. March is the start of fall. (autumn) Tonight is 20 Celsius (68F) & 70 percent humidity. It was up to 81.5F (27.5C) this afternoon.
Lots of chirpy insects at night, some finding their way indoors.

My cousins in North Eastern Australia could be in for rough days ahead. Tropical Cyclone (Hurricane) Alfred is approaching land as a likely category 2 storm. Up to 20+ inches of rain possible. One cousin who lives up a mountain has been cut off (bridges washed away before) for days previously in other storms.
I watched a video (filmed end of January)of some mountain bikers in the Southern Mountains doing a 690 mile trek, they got snow burnt (sun reflecting off snow) and wind burnt in the middle of summer, when it usually is just dust and calm.
I have -2 this morning and lots of sun coming.
Get by tomorrow and the next 10 days will be above freezing except for Sunday.
I will see how that comes out.
Sunny start today, still 3° , no wind and we can see around the yard here from 6:30 am until 7:00 pm, but sunrise and sunset is a bit narrower window, 7:07 am and 6:15 pm.

17° here now, not gonna break the freezing mark today or tonight. Clear skies and winds supposed to stay under 10mph. I would prefer to skip this day but I have about 130 more logs to cut before next Tuesday and I have to put the push on. Warming a bit after tomorrow morning but Wednesday looks to be a total rainout. AT least the ground has stiffened back up, it was getting sloppy and slick on top.

Looks like that front is sliding north as fast as it is moving east. You might get lucky and only whipped by the tail of the storm, but that doesn't look like fun either. North of you will get clobbered, it's an ugly system. Best of luck, keep your heads low.
Solid overcast here, but warming. Its 32 now and headed higher. But none of the partial sun they promised. The rain is coming, hopefully holds off until I get out of the woods. Occasional light wind and so far the dew point is pretty low, but that will change. It is what it is. I have a deadline to make, gotta get at it.
I take back my last post. Looks like you could really get clobbered Lynn. Tie down everything that isn't nailed in place and bring the small kids and animals inside. Best of luck with this one.

Supposed to be partly sunny here today, then they changed it to mostly cloudy, which apparently means 2.5 minutes of sunshine for the day. It did warm up, but it did not feel like it very much. 43 here now, which is nice. I watched the rain pass right over us for the last hour or two, but none made it to the ground.
Tomorrow is going to be a rainout thanks to that system that others are enjoying as I type this. :wink_2:

Awhile ago the drive way was bare to gravel. Now, it's 32° here, snow and the wind is kicking up and suppose to blow hard tonight and tomorrow. Cold weekend to. Mild all next week though.

Yesterday's forecast for snow kind of petered out and we got a little wind and a dusting (less than 1") of snow.
During that thawing period we just got over with, we lost over half of our snowpack.

Getting more grass here everyday, no precip in the near forecast for a week or so. Today looked pretty through the window, but work out side and with that wind, it was not pleasant. I unloaded my truck this morning and the snow was blowing around, just flurries, but still that wind brought the conditions down quite a bit. Wind chills around 15° and I decided to blow it off. Hard to work in the woods and drop trees when there are winds up to 40mph. High temp hit 40 but it never felt like it with a max wind of 43mph and average of over 20mph. Hoping (REALLY HOPING) tomorrow is a better day.

Well it wasn't too cold out today with a low of 25 and a high of 35. After and overcast start and some snow showers, the sky turned blue and the wind was back up to 30mph by 8am. This is getting old and I have to get logs cut.
I had a couple of trees that could go anywhere and not hurt much, but they would both be a lot of work if they went the wrong way, so I figured I would get hose, they were 1/2 mile apart. Of course the wind was coming from the desired direction of fall for both trees and helped me to hang both of them up. The first tree I had to carry the logs 100' to the toolcat because of access and the second one I could drag the stem a bit and cut right by the forks. Only 20 logs, but with this wind, that is a victory. The weather is not helping me much this week at all.
Funny thing. I had been cutting in the first area last week and had no trouble finding my way in, but there was snow then. Now it's gone and I had to re-scout the entire area to find my tree and figure a path into it.
I have 3 marked trees left and all 3 of them are near a shed (6-12' away) and a pool (15'away) and they all have to fall against the prevailing wind so I may have to wait. I jut don't feel THAT lucky. ffcheesy

Well things had been drying up and melting off this past week but the last two nights have been cold. The swamp where I work has refrozen and when I drove in this morning it was talking ...a LOT! Cracking and popping like mad as sections refroze and moved. It did hit 42 today for a little while but never really felt much like it. Steady breeze 12-15 and very damp. I got so cold on my morning walk scouting trees that I never warmed up the rest of the day. I might be getting something or just overtired from the past week's work. I should have gone back out and cut later today, but I just blew it off as a "Sunday". Sometimes I do that and can double my output the following day because I feel better.
Anyway, for the next several days it should stay above freezing and tomorrow especially looks very good, bright sun, warmer temps, and low winds. I may even pack a lunch, but if I get a lot of logs I will have to come home and unload before going back, so...
Either way, weather be darned, I have to keep on it.
Got warm enough today to wash the salt off the car and while I was at it I cleaned up the SxS. Supposed to be nice here for the next week with highs in the seventies. Probably have to let the stove go out which won't hurt my feelings. Got daffodils and crocuses blooming. Spring is on the way. Hallelujah!
I won't see a daffodil until sometime in May. ffcheesy The first flower I see around here is colts foot, the snow will still be melting when they bloom in the ditches. It is usually in April. I would think if anyone was going to tap maples up here, it would be this week. 30° to 54° for highs up and down day to day. Fri-Sunday it's not even going to freeze at night.

Yesterday was a beauty! Low wind, blue skies and temps is the high 60's. I actually sat in the yard and read my book while I waited for my log pick up to arrive. Nearly let the woodstove go out totally, but then saw the overnight lows and restarted it last night. Still clear today but 20° colder and more windy. I went and dropped a couple more trees, but again, the wind was against my fall line so I waited until it died for a minute then chased in the final cut. Got lucky twice. ffcheesy But the wind still makes it not totally pleasant to be out there today.

Much damage in South Central Mississippi from the many tornadoes that are continually traveling through. Sorta like a freight train, one after the other. I have not heard of any personal injuries. I am now seeing damage in the East Central part of the state.

That type of weather scares me, I'll take blizzards over that any day!
There are virtually no basements nor actual storms shelters here. Our water table is such that moisture/water intrusion would be guaranteed.
Our safety place is our bathroom shower which ain't safe but it's what we have. It's in the interior of our brick home and has another bath behind it.

Wind and dust storms in Kansas causing several 50 to 70 car pile-up and some deaths. Tornadoes ect. We were in Stillwater and had to evacuate due to fire. had to take back roads to get into town to eat, then slept in the cars till about 1 am to go back to our friend home. they were spared, but we lost a lot of time to help get their new to them home in order.

Mid 80s here today but a little cold spell tomorrow. Still got a little bit of wood on the porch and once I burn it I plan to quit for the year unless we have a emergency.
We are on the southern end, so cold and windy. concrete is damp but no real precipitation.
Well The other doctor who lives in town got to the clinic. I can't.... The office is on the very North end of town.
He got there about 8:30 to quick treat the sick dog and just get us to tomorrow. In the time it took to look the dog over and give it some meds to stop the vomiting. The high line that runs east west down the street towards a sub station went down. Trapping him the clients and the dog in the clinic. So I called in to public power to report the stranding and get someone to close the highway down as the lines are down across the road. This is going to be a moderate mess.

Been waiting for Purolator, said Wednesday couldn't deliver because of bad weather, was sunny and no wind all day long, 50°. Then said natural disaster at the end of the day. No floods near here, one 20 miles south on a route they'd not be travelling to get to me. I'm up high and dry and so isn't the highway. Said loaded for delivery this morning, no one showed all day and at this hour, 4:30 pm, ain't going to be no truck come here. They usually are no later than 3:00 pm at the most. It's not anything I'm in a hurry for, just a syrup decanter, no big deal. But I'd like to know where any flood, or hurricanes or tornadoes, or fires ever touch down between here and Florenceville, 10 miles away. No report of anything and River Watch never called anything. Who knows, they might be 125 miles south of here in Jemseg where it probably is flooding over the road, but odd they say they are in Florenceville. ffcheesy ffcheesy ffcheesy

It was a weather day.
Had rain in the morning, then the temp dropped, and it started to snow. Snowed for about an hour. Did not get much in town, but 10 minutes away more then an inch. My fields are all white. Then after the snow the sun tried to come out, but failed. Then the wind came up.
Yeah we have not quite an inch here of new snow, but will be in the 50's today and that will melt it. ffcheesy It's going to be a cooler week than it has been the last 2 weeks. 27° here this morning, sunny and headed for the 50's today. Maybe some rain in the evening. Had enough rain a couple of days ago to keep me home, yesterday it blowed so hard there was no way I was going out to cut. it ranged between 20 and 35MPH all day long and the temp maxed out at around 45. The wind chill made it unpleasant at least. The section I am working in now is on top of a knoll, so it catches the wind fairly well coming across a mostly open 10 acre swamp/marsh.
So far today it's fairly calm and partly sunny, but the gusts are supposed to return in an hour or two. I'll give it a shot though.

Our weather has been all over the place. We were in the 50's for a day or two, then a couple days ago, we woke up to 3" of snow. It's been snowing and raining since. Last night it started warming up, and was up to 44 and raining when I got up at 5:30. Supposed to hit 60 by Wednesday. Typical March...it's gonna change every 15 minutes!
Woke up to a very mild dusting this morning, very mild, and it turned to rain. Low so far today is 31 and the high is 35. Rainy, dank, damp, and not pleasant at all. Rain should stop in a few minutes according to the radar. Expected to go down in the mid 30's every night for the next 10 days or so and only hitting 50 once or twice. Spring is slow coming for sure, by my account.

Purolator has a parcel of mine, the local delivery guy has put off delivery for 4 business days now. Keeps saying weather delay every day it's on the truck for delivery. I wonder how many days they play that game? That light dry snow right now never stopped FedEX from coming. LOL

Barely an inch of snow here. Never snowed for much duration and was light dry stuff. Melting now, 35°. Road is bare. I went up to the woodlot with the buggy early and cut some firewood this morning. Had to hook the winch on to a tree, because I hit a deep spot that was hard on the way in, coming out the wheels were off the dirt and spinning in snow. Then I noticed the winch's positive wire not hooked back up. Wedged it in under the starter wire, made good enough contact to run the winch in and out. I thought something malfunctioned at first try, click...click. Hmm. Anyway, looked under the seat and seen what was up. Well, I'm here to tell about it. :thumbsup:

I had 30° here just before daylight and it was 40° at noon. I think it will climb another 5° by 5:00 pm. Was nice and clear here in the morning, but there was a fog just before daylight. All clouded over here now.
I cut firewood this morning again. I thin as well, so the wood doesn't add up as fast when you're cutting junk out of the way or spruce poles for corduroy. A lot of the times I have to buck the aspen vertically, big limbs will grab 6 spruce trees when you snip if free of the stump. Doesn't make any difference and it really doesn't seem to hurt them spruce anyway. Black spruce is tough, pretty much the toughed softwood there is. :D

clear skies here today for 500 miles in every direction, but that danged wind is back up averaging 15 mph and I am getting tired of having a cold neck. More snow flurries last night. The low today was 29 and it's 35 now. Burt when that wind blows it makes it uncomfortable. Since my dermatitis (wood allergy) is getting really bad, I think I'll take today off and let it calm down while I work on fixing a chainsaw in the shop.

I'm planning on smoking a rack of ribs between rain squalls tomorrow, so I'm sure it'll be windy, it seems every time I fire up the grill it's windy, kind of sick of it, like it sounds Tom is as well. I could move the grill to the backyard where most of the wind is blocked but there's not a great spot for it there.
I guess we're going to get a wintery mix over the upcoming weekend, rain, snow, and ice!

Sunny and 23° here at nearly noon. Some nice day out there. The buggy road on top of the hard crust this morning, places 12" of snow in the woods road. I was cutting wood in some lower ground and no bare spots in there. But up hill and out near the road where I thinned some is less snow around. Sun from the south hits harder on a rise there and melts the snow quicker. No melting today I don't think.
Claiming to be 78 degrees right now. It's quite lovely. So far we aren't getting any rain. I was serious about smoking ribs and it gets windy. I am and it is.
We've got a good amount of green fuzz on some plants, mostly the honeysuckle.

We went for a short rides and the roads are all dry and this was alot of back roads. I was surprised to see the roads dry in just a short time. But it was a fine snow too. But it was below freezing the whole storm.

The freezing rain finally ended. Still running a generator from Saturday night. total devastation. At least an 1" of ice on everything from Saturday to Sunday afternoon. It looks like a war zone around here. Power lines down, trees and branches, especially pine down every where. it above freezing this morning and the ice is gone. We might get power back tonight, but I'm betting not until Thursday.

Freezing rain/ice storms are an underrated phenomena, we don't see them often but the amount of damage that setting that much frozen water on everything is pretty astounding.

3 solid days of gray drizzly damp weather gave me no interest in getting out. This morning we have the same as Ray, add a degree or two and our snow is 10 days gone. But the humidity at 7:30am is 25% lower than it has been for 3 days. Should be a pretty day, but only topping out mid 40's and of course, the wind is forecast to come back up into the 25mph range again. Tomorrow will be even cooler, then clouding back up in the afternoon and going back into the damp rainy stuff for a few more days. If this is spring, it surely is getting a slow start.

Woke up to a little windy, and chilly. Supposed to get up to 80 degrees tonight around 7p, then a couple hours later we are supposed to get rough storms 70+ mph winds are being called for. Then 5 days of rain, they expect 6-8" by Sunday. Pretty sure I won't be mowing for a bit yet. The yard already has puddles, I have a feeling the back yard will be good and flooded. Let's see how my creek bridge does and the barn... Some time I need to go out and dig a slightly deeper channel in the creek, there are a couple spots where the water comes up over the bank and will run through the yard instead of following the creek (which is pretty small anyway and often dry). I've created a small ponding area in front of the culverts at the bridge and so far that has done pretty well to help regulate the flow a bit. If I'm smart I get out tonight and scoop out the build up in front of the culvert pipes, let's see if I remember.

We had 30° at around 2:00 pm, I thought the woods road would still be froze. I went to the woodlot and the road was soft with that bright sun out. Then by 5:00 pm it was 39°. didn't quite hit 40°. :sunny:

Pretty good storm around 11p last night, by flashlight the backyard looks a bit puddly but not underwater. I did get out to clear the culvert pipes last night but I couldn't really tell if I made it better or worse.
I originally covered both pipes with screen (4" x2" holes in the screen) thinking it'd keep logs/sticks from jamming up in there. One of the screens quickly went away to be with other screens, in nature, but the other still has a screen that was quite clogged with smaller than index finger material. I'll have to get in there and cut it off sometime.
Up to 44 degrees here this morning, but we had some pretty intense downpours during the night!

Roads was fine when I went to work at 6:30 and then the roads cooled off from the snow or the temp changed, and the roads got bad in just minutes. By 7:15 the roads were white.
Things are drying out, but I still can't go in the woods with my tractor.
Of our 5 solid days of rain 3 have gone by rainy but not complete blowouts. The creek is up and running hard, mostly runoff from the big empty field across the way, but it hasn't started flowing across the yard yet. Just random puddles, instead of one massive puddle. I heard that it's supposed to get down into the 20's Tuesday...
Showers here this afternoon. Was a little bit sunny when I left for some pine boards, showered all the way home. smiley_thumbsdown

Thursday morning saw us with a downright blizzard. We wound up with about 4" of snow and a cold, hard wind until about 3pm. Then just as quick as it got bad, it was clear and sunny again, and the melt started.
Friday we woke up to a balmy 10 degrees. Sure was pretty, but that was a little cooler than I like this time of year. Got up into the 50's again by early afternoon, and according to the weather guessers, that's kind of where it's going to be all week.

We have been benefiting from heavy South winds for the past couple of weeks. This pushed the storms further North and raised our daytime temperatures into the 80°'s. That will all change this weekend and we will see 40° Tuesday morning. Hopefully we will have more moderate Springtime weather after that. I should be back to sawing probably Tuesday.
Was 40's today, I can hear the wind ramping up again tonight for that rain approaching. Rain tonight and tomorrow. Who knows how much, could be a fine mist or something of substance. The ground still has a lot of frost here this year. Like walking on cement today and it was above freezing by mid morning.
I had a couple windows in the basement that never got trimmed out and I was waiting to get my shop built and be able to access my table saw and planer. Well today was the day to plane, cut, sand and finish the pine trim. Then I put it up this afternoon. Them carpenters are faster than me. First off the inside trim needs to be 1/2" thick and 1/4" recesses into the window. Now the shop windows were different, everything was 3/4" material as it comes from the store and the recess was 1/2" deep. Everybody is different. ffcheesy Plus shims you have to make for behind the pine trim. Nothing to shims, but if you haven't any, you gotta make some. It don't just appear in thin air. Ti---iii--iii--iii me...............is on my side. A job complete, looks nicer than the raw window with no trim. ;)

The older guys that used to get the weather forecast mostly right for us are either retired or gone elsewhere to better things. That Presque Isle station has now been taken over by a Bangor news and weather forecast in the mornings. The other bunch up there come on in the evening. I have not been impressed with their guesses. Ted Shapiro used to be weather man for Presque Isle and he did quite well, but there was some kind of shake up and he got replaced with a couple 'kids', and by the looks of'm they never seen much sun nor dirt under their nails. ffcheesy ffcheesy Ted has a Facebook fan page 'Tedintheclouds' and forecasts from there. We finally got our power back Saturday afternoon, 7 days no power. Ice and snow this morning again, lost our power around midnight with a huge wind blast as the storm front came in.
I'm glad I left the generator out still. Just had to start it and plug it in for my morning coffee!
Snowed all day and never did add up. Then at 5pm things changed. It really started to snow. The ground was white in 10 minutes in town.
I came home to bare fields, then 10 minutes later the fields are white.
Hasn't really done much of anything here, looks like snow off in the hills, but nothing has stuck here. So far just another bogus weather forecast. Got up to 40° here today. Might look entirely different in the morning. ffcheesy
Quit raining here and cooled down today. Lows in the 20's tonight so I decided to fire my stove back up. Not much wood on the porch so when it's gone I'm hoping to be done burning until next fall. Plan to clean out the stove and pipe and let it rest for a few months. Getting kinda tired of fooling with it anyway.

Over 13 hrs of daylight now, sun sets at 8:10 pm here and rises at 6:54 am. It did hit 40° around 4:00 pm with the sun shining hard in on the porch. I would say the actual was 37°, even though the sun does not shine on the thermometer, it is not a shade box, that reflective sun off the porch siding makes some heat. ;) 30° out there now and the sun is behind the hills.
This temp was in the company car in Mt Vernon.
Just about 15 minutes from home.

I want to stack some firewood and get the basement full, but have to go fetch my buggy this morning. I got a new tire and basic rim, you're looking at $500. I could buy two truck tires for that. These bike shops are like chainsaw shops, high markups. Yeah, you can buy them $150 ones and they might last a year if your lucky. I know a fella that bought some, the bike sat all winter in a garage, tires where all flat by spring. ffcheesy After 5 years my tires are still like new.

When I got back from fetching the buggie from the shop I did pile 200 cu feet of firewood in the basement after lunch. Another 400 cu feet to pile from last fall's wood, will likely have that stacked tomorrow, might finish it off Saturday, depends on my ambition. Then work some more on the 4 extra cords I want to cut and haul in over the next few days..

There's 100 cu feet in a rank. Not sure I can get it all because some is in ice on the ground. Won't be much left, but once I get the top wood off, the warm air and sun may just free it.
I think my cousin just bought a fully decked out Norwood, I never saw it, but I was invited to use it. :D I think he said it has a power feed and power up and down, maybe even the log turner. Fully hydraulic he said. Stand back and push buttons. :D

Saw two moose this morning. Was ribboning property lines and marked a couple trails to cut firewood from.
Woke up to everything being white again. Been snowing a few hours, but not sticking on the warmer roads. Just touched 32° for the low overnight, 34 now, and won't see 40° or any sunshine today. Looks like this system is just circling around us. Not real typical for mid April here. I hear increased accidents on the scanner and wires down. I'm quite sure that higher up in elevation they have a fair amount of snow building up. 500' can make a big difference here in these 'storms'.
One of my clients that picked up this week said they have had a day or two in the past few weeks that actually touched 80°. No such luck here, I think maybe we touched 70° one day and mid 60's for a few other days.

What a miserable day! We got an inch of rain/snow that lasted all day, 92% humidity, and winds between 15 and 20 mph. Temp topped at 39 during the day (high was 40 at midnight, then just fell off). Not nice at all. I got the temp int eh shop up to 70 at one point, but it wasn't enough. Hopefully tomorrow is better.

Been a miserable spring.
The last 4-5 years has spoiled us.
Now that I think on it, in the last 3 weekends, we have had 1/2 day that was workable. the rest is snotty, but today was just as uncomfortable as it gets for a shoulder season.
I don't remember seeing higher than 40° yesterday, had some showers mid day, but otherwise was mostly dry. Flagged my woods boundaries, flagged some trails and did some yard work in the morning. Damp with light showers in the middle of the day, then dry again in the late part of the day. Light showers or rain in the night, never heard any roaring down pours. Suppose to be wet all day here today, I here a light rain and wet snow mix. 34° now. A little bit of white on the ground. Looks wet off and on most of the week ahead. Have had a fire on here all month, but not all day long. I shall venture out across the drive way to build a smudge in the shop to keep the dampness away. ;)

Got up to 80F here today but we have had tornadoe watches and severe thunderstorm warnings all evening. Golf ball sized hail in some areas. We had small hail here but have seemed to have dodged the bullet this time. Tornadoes are almost unheard of around here but a few have hit in resent years. Hopefully not a sign of the future.
We've had tornadoes up here, but they are not too common. Never had any last year that I heard of. I remember one that hit a trailer home and there was nothing but insulation hanging in the bushes and the family was unharmed. It crossed two hydro power lines and never damaged them, went down through hardwoods and uprooted in it's path and was all done before it hit the river, that would be 2 miles from that trailer.
We have them occasionally, in fact I think they made a movie about it. But the wizard in that one was fake unlike our wizard on the forum WOC

The head ponds here are pretty much open water now. I see the osprey are back on there nesting poles. Lots of them poles around here. Eagles are never too hard to find either, saw one last week sitting on a pile of river ice that washed on shore.
A perfectly nasty nasty day. Temp high was 44° but the wind has not dropped below 20MPH all day, mostly up in the 30's range. Solid overcast with no more than 15 minutes of sun all day either. It felt, all day, like rain was coming, but it never did. Just not a nice day. I shut the house stove down more than a week ago, because of dwindling wood. Well with all my running around outside and laying on cold shop floors I just can't seem to warm up. SO I restarted the house stove. It will be a 'one and done' fire, but if I don't get my den, at least, back up to 75 for a little while I just won't warm up. I had a lousy night's sleep last night for other reasons, so tonight I really need a full night. This shoulder season seems like a long one this year.

Started the mill for the first time this year, I'm not open yet.
The mill fired up and ran just like when I turned it off last December 1. No jumping the batt, no bull, just ran like a champ.
It's supposed to be a nice temperature today and tomorrow, but I ain't got enough kites for the wind, which I'm getting tired of. I'd like to work on the raised bed tomorrow but I fear 30 mph winds may blow me away with them. We'll see how it goes, if I can get out I'll probably be in shorts!

Very nice day yesterday, temp hit 69° and sunny until late afternoon. But that wind is still persistent. A 30mph wind at 65° with bright sun and 40% humidity is still a whole lot better than a 30mph wind with 43°, solid overcast, and 90% humidity any day. :wink_2:

They forecast a 59° for today, 45° now. If it gets to that it will be late afternoon. Only 40's and 50's here in the long range. Which is fine, I don't like them freak high temps. If there is too many in a row some stuff will flower too early and get frost killed.
The way the temps are going this year, I don't see that happening.

I was in Pa one year and it was 90° one day and then they had a frost the next morning.
We went about an hour drive from here. Rained all the time we were there and 55.
Got about 16 minutes from the house and the road was dry and the sun was trying to come out. This is a back road that does not get much traffic. No way the cars dried the road out.
Then the temp went up almost 15° higher.
We only got to 48° here, 10° colder than predicted. I didn't think it would get up there without some sun. Been showery off and on all day, but mostly a humid muggy look more than anything. Hauled in 2 buggy loads of wood.
Was supposed to be a rain out here today but turned out nice enough to have an Easter party with the in-laws outside and I just got off the mower. It did rain some, and hard for a bit but not all day like "they" were calling for.
8:30pm it was just about 70.

I think we are turning the corner or at least not worrying about freeze ups for a while. Yesterday hit 85° briefly but it felt more like 75. I worked in the shop with the doors open and it took all day to get that up to 70. We just got a splash of rain at 6pm last evening at 6pm and the temp dropped 15° at the same time. Was 69 at 0pm last night.
This morning it's 48 and I got woken up by the wind again at 5:30, running about 30mph, so we'll have that again today I guess. The high for today won't quite make 60, so 25° cooler than yesterday. Lots of sunshine so far though. I might hook up my water pump today.

Brought in a buggy load of wood this morning, added capacity to the woodshed with some old wood in the refuse pile and a couple 2x4's. Never waste anything, comes in handy some day. hahahaha
Saw 1 deer up by the woodlot, 4 turkeys, 2 were roosting in old cedar snags, 2 out in a field, and a mallard duck was in the brook near those roosting turkeys. You wouldn't think those awkward turkeys could even fly. A wonder of nature.

Got the shop woodshed filled up for next winter, hauled in two trailer loads. Expanded capacity even more today. Should be 3 cord all together. I know each rank is ~100 cu feet. I had 100 cu feet already. And she's stuffed to the hilt.
Was a great day here too. A little above 60, there was some clouds but none that affected the sun in my area.
The clouds did move in around 4 and it's raining out now, just a shower, but off and on all night.
Well, Easter was basically 4 days rain. Ex tropical storm gradually dying out over NZ, Caused a bit of havoc up North with localised flooding and thunderstorms cutting power. And for some reason the power crews weren't keen on being up poles fixing faults when there was another line of thunderstorms incoming.
But pretty dull here. North of the Mt got drenched, but mostly just light rain at home. Been cool calm overcast today, ~90% humidity, but almost not quite raining. Wind should go South tomorrow, cooler, maybe a bit of snow up in the Mt, and then some nice fine / crisp Autumn days.
Good as we have a 3 day week to deliver all the online shopping from Easter. Friday is another holiday, ANZAC day, which is the Aus/NZ version of Veterans Day? Kinda dreading what will be in the depot when I get there tomorrow. :wacky: Luckily they are limited as to what the local truck can actually deliver to us in a day, If there is too much they may send a guy in a van later, but we are gone, and will deal with it tomorrow.
40° and light rain here this morning, not going to get much warmer. I noticed the fields were getting dry here in the sun and wind we've had. The road section that has had no snow on it for awhile was dry and hard. But further up where woods over shadows it it was still wet and sticky. Good thing about the buggy it does not make ruts. Been a couple pickups going up there and just rutting it. And these guys aren't hunting, just road rutters I call them. One nut case tried to cross a road full of snow on a hill, got stuck, and I seen his buddy arrive to pull him out. He went on over the hill, but little does he know the snow will be a lot deeper on the other end of that road in the shade of a spruce grove. Let'm sit there until May 15th to think it over. ffcheesy I don't know if he got through. We get lots of bone heads this time of year. :uhoh:
It's 40° now, went up a couple degrees since I've been up and has stopped raining.

I usually put it off as long as possible but I had to turn my ac unit on Easter Sunday. 80F upstairs made it a little to hot to sleep. Now it's grass cutting and dealing with a lot of pollen. Cleaned out the stove and will clean the pipe out when ever I get someone to help set up the ladder and hold it for me. Been getting very little build up since I insulated the pipe a couple years ago. I sure like these longer days.
I'm with you on the longer days! I agree that over the weekend was some warm sleeping weather too, too warm! My wife tends to close the window in the evenings now, because my dog likes to bark at the wind. She doesn't bark a lot (the dog, ha!) but it's at random times meaning 3 different times hours apart from each other which is annoying to try to sleep through. Barking dogs make me bonkers. I know they are doing their job but it's still annoying.

First night of the golf league tonight, it's supposed to get into the low 80's! And you can always count on a threat of rain on Thursday nights in south Dayton, Ohio. It's been better over the past couple years but my first 3 or 4 years of golf league there was at least a 50% chance of rain every single Thursday through the season.

55° here today, and I heard the frogs sing today in an ephemeral pool near where I cut firewood. There is still a little ice in it to. Still some snow on the ground in under my spruce/fir woods. I'm all done with firewood until this fall. I have all I need for this coming winter. The grass is greening up.
I heard the peepers in the brook last night. In a week we will hear them at the house.
I saw 70 today a lot.
I have not been way back in the woods, but I would think the ice-snow is all gone.

We had a rain duration of about 8 hrs here and it dropped around 6/10" of rain. Since then just clouds and fog, which looks like it will stick around today. And radar does indicate another round of rain today real soon. We can use all the rain we can get because in just a week the fields were drying out here and a grey burnt ashes look to it. It's not dry in the woods by any stretch, still snow melt feeding moisture.
40° this morning. Not going to get much warmer, maybe 45°. Monday and Tuesday looks warm and dry, 60's weather, but Wednesday is going to be windy and big cool down for the rest of the week, 40's and 50's but not freezing at night.

I did forget to mention the red maples are in bloom, lots of red to see. Been red for a few days now.
Our Red Maples budded out about 2 weeks ago. The blossoms are dropping off now as the leaves push out.
Red maples and sugar maples are not quite flowering here, but you can see buds swelling. In southern NB they would be flowering now.
The narcisis have been up for awhile, but not flowering yet. Same with trout lily, up but no flowers yet.
A little chilly yesterday and today until you get working. Sweats and a t-shirt are sufficient.

We hit our hi temp for the day of 55° at 9pm tonight. Not a pleasant day really, the winds held between 15 and 25mph all day with gusts over 30. I decided to stay in because it's Sunday, because my back hurts, because I don't have to go out, because I'm supposed to be retired, and because I can. ffcheesy

Transplanted 3 rhubarb buds into the garden from an old spot they were growing at for years. Rhubarb is just breaking ground here. Cleaned out the furnace flu in the house, all done burning until this September. Humidifier is cleaned up and packed away as well. ffsmiley

Tornado warning yesterday afternoon, wind came and took a few more trees down, probably were half broken from the ice storm. We lost power at dinner time, hooked up the generator again, it died just before I went to bed, engine was running but no electricity coming out. The power came back on about 3 am. I now have a new thing to fix! Maybe. I am the 3rd owner on this generator, I've had it 10 years, so maybe time to bite the bullet and get a new one, the new dual fuels, I set my generator up next to the big propane tank and I could plumb it in.
Stayed at 52° here all day, sunny and windy. I did manage to spread my manure and mulch for the gardens, berries and shrubs. I won't till for 2 more weeks.
The peppers all are up in the grow tent this week. I think there is only one cell that isn't up yet. :sunny: :thumbsup:

Those frogs was some loud yesterday up in the woods, I could here them over the motor noise on the buggy. One frog pond still had ice on the edge of a big field. I see some snow in the alders near my property line, but all snow is gone under the spruce now. I had a scoop full of ice/snow on a wet crossing on the corduroy poles. I don't see snow on Mars Hill anymore, I do see snow on Katahdin.
We are OK here with the weather. Bit of rain and breezy. But other places around the country are getting hammered. Wellington (where Lara is studying) is pretty much shut down due to wind. Airport is closed, and the ferries to the Sth Island aren't sailing. One wind gauge on the hill above the city recorded 150k gust (and then stopped :wacky: ). The wave buoy at the harbour entrance was measuring 11 metre (36 ft) waves, hence the ferry cancellations.
Further South Christchurch has heavy rain and flooding, and inland heavy snow. although that seems to be clearing this evening. The rain has moved Nth to Wellington, so they are still under storm warnings until the morning.

I have not been out by Long Lake or Trousers Lake in years, but was always ice in them lakes until June. In central NB those trout streams was ice cold in July. And around the lakes, if you was lucky the deer made paths. Anywhere it was spring fed along the bank of the lakes, it was like ice cubes and the bottoms where the springs came in was sandy and the vermiculite that weathered off the rocks looked like gold shining in the sun. But the lake bottoms was deep mud/sediment, shallow lakes. The trout congregated near them cold water springs. You could fish with a bare hook, anything that moved was hammered by a trout. The good old days.

Pretty morning here, early clouds cleared out before 8am then blue skies and it hit 76°. Stayed that way until 11:30 when it clouded over again. Rain began to raid at 1:30, the temp dropped over 10° in 20 minutes, the winds picked up, rai pelted, thunder and lightening. dropped 1/2" of precip in short order. Now we are in a dry pocket for a few hours before it starts for real. Forecast calls for rain everyday now until next Saturday.
Been raining here now for a couple hrs. The ground here has not been muddy from these little rains. I think they are all needed, was terrible dry last fall until almost Christmas. The wet places in the woods are not dried up, but the fields dry fast once the snow goes.

One Tom with 8 hens, 4 deer, 1 moose and 1 rabbit I saw on my buggy ride this morning. I walked upon the moose which was lying down a few feet from the edge of a field. I think momma told it to move on, probably had a new calf this spring by now.

We got 3/4" of rain yesterday mostly in the afternoon which was enough to overtop my rain barrel, which holds about 330 gallons. Knowing the rain was coming, over the last week I water blasted a couple of logs, washed down the mill and also blew all the mushroom log chips, bark, and residue out the the truck bed as well as washed all the winter mud off the truck. Still I didn't make much of a dent in the water supply, only using about 100 gallons. All filed up again now and we have 5 more days of rain coming. Hopefully this will be nothing like the epic rain we had 20 years and one month ago. I hope to never see that again. I just went and checked and 2 years later the USGS released a full report on that storm. Towns and villages were cut off for days and 23 million dollars in damage incurred. If your bored, you can read the report HERE (https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2007/1036/OFR2007-1036.pdf). Those were some very long days doing road closures and pumping basements with the FD. Never before had we seen major roadways under 6-8' of water like that, not to mention the roads and bridges washed away. Makes me shiver to think about what I saw. We were doing water rescues out in the middle of cornfields.
Ah but that's all history now. Just cloudy, damp, and cool for the next week with on an off rain. We only had 1/8" overnight and this system is poorly organized right now. Might see more heavier stuff this afternoon.

We've gotten 3.95" of rain since Saturday morning, the last of which fell at 3am this morning. The sun is shining now with blue skies but they have a little more rain in the afternoon forecast. Our creek is up at bank full and there is a lot of standing water in the swamp. Let's see how long this takes to dry out.
Had some rain in the night, not much. Was 56° this morning and foggy at the start. Never had more than a few sprinkles until noon and saw the sun in the afternoon where I was working.
Was eating lunch on the tailgate of the truck, and that young moose stepped out on the road and also a couple turkeys. I was later sitting on a stump and I heard one hen turkey come close by and cluck a time or two. A man could be eaten alive. ffcheesy ffcheesy

Same here. I just had to get something out of the truck and it is just gorgeous out even though it's still coming up through the mid 50's. Everything is soaked with dew. We have flood warnings for tomorrow again with up to another 2" of rain forecast and after the 4" we've already had, that's about enough for me.

'Twas lovely but breezy on the golf course last night, until around 645 or 7pm, then it was still nice out but freezing in my shorts and golf shirt.
It was a beautiful morning yesterday, but clouded up and just after noon we got a little rain, then a few hours later it really started and we ended the day with just over an inch... again. Been raining a good part of the night and we are at .62" now with a flood watch until tomorrow morning. I think we are close to 6 inches of rain in the past 7 days.

Not so nice here. It has rained solid since over night, over 2" so far today and we are at exactly 7.0" since Saturday.
About 3 days ago I cut a small trench by hand from the center of my swamp to help it bleed off into the creek. As of this morning it was still draining toward the creek, but all day the creek has been rising and by 4pm the creek was now backflowing through that cut into the swamp. The creek is getting to the point of going over it's banks. This will take a while to drain out, maybe a few weeks. But no worries, we have more rain coming in Tuesday. ffcheesy

Well, the rain moved in over night. It's 42° this morning and not going to get much warmer all day. Great for the frogs and grass seed, probably a few wet birds this morning though. Birds are singing as if it is a bright sunny day this morning. :wacky: Doesn't look like it is raining very hard here at the moment, almost none at all. Doesn't look to me to be much of a soaker so far. Barely a 1/4" so far.

We wound up with 2.26" of rain yesterday which petered out in the late evening. SO now over 7" in 7 days. Not much rain today as this very slow moving system is now showing some love to CFarm and SD. ffcheesy
But behind it there is cold movement and the winds are picking way up. Gusting just under 20mph and the temp is just at 51 now and not headed much higher. Mostly overcast, feels like a cold and windy October day.
As luck would have it, we leave for VT in a few minutes to attend a memorial service for my 1st cousin who passed back in January at 93. We will follow this front and likely catch up with the rain and stay in it until we turn around and head back home around 2-3pm. Might see some sun when we get home. Definitely not a pleasant day, but better than the last time we went over for a funeral and it was in the 20's with a 25mph steady wind on a hillside cemetery.

another beautiful sunny day, down to freezing last night, but going up to 15C or 60F today. Blackflies are out and hungry , it's screened bug jacket conditions. We can zip and unzip the head on these screened jackets, I wear out 1 every season. Put it on in the morning and take it off when the day is done.

I got the mower serviced and went mowing. Felt almost like I was riding a snow sled with a winter suit on. I had my overalls on from working on the mower and they stayed on. Wind is kinda cool. Suppose to see 55°, but I bet it will take all day. Sun is out anyway. 46° right now.

I was mowing the lawn once and some one said the same thing about it being wet. But I was working a 40 week and working the greenhouse-veggie business too. Mow when I can!!!

You still don't have to mow in the rain. Skip a day, skip a week, doesn't bother me none. I couldn't mow here on wet grass, all side hills. I'd need a 4-wheel drive tractor. ffcheesy ffcheesy

That's exactly what I have a full jacket made out of mesh screen and you zip your head in when the bugs are bad and out when they are buzzing your face. Keeps spraying deet to a minimum , I spray my ankles and wrists, and always rub a bit in behind my ears in the hair line.
Gnats are getting hungry now, I put on a skull cap that wicks. I pull over a bug net on my head and helmet on top. Keeps them from chewing me up. I wear long sleeve cotton shirt.

Full disclosure as I've not yet tried this but one of my sons puts a dryer sheet under his ball cap and says it works to keep the pesky gnats out of your eyes and nostrils when mowing. Anyone else heard this?

55° here on Monday. Today it hit 72° on the porch. Bug net works good for me, had it on today starting around noon. Sunny day.
Had a bright moon here all night, never set until close to 6:00 am.
I was enjoying my morning coffee around 5:00 am on the porch and before that was preparing lunch and starting a breakfast before heading to work. I leave for work just before 6:00 am.

We're supposed to get to 85 tomorrow, then back in the mid 70's for the next week or so. It's been on and off rainy here.

85° here now, suppose to be similar tomorrow with a possible shower late in the afternoon. Doesn't sound like a high probability. Windows are open here, it's a real dry heat. This is our driest time of year right now. Then first part of June will usually be wet and cooler.
Started out a sunny day here in eastern NC. I got some errands done, and set up a card table to pack up a boring machine to send to a customer in Maine. 35 minutes into the take down, I heard some thunder. Rushed and put everything away as to not get the machine, tools, and card table wet. And went in for lunch.
Rained for a while, and then the sun came back out. Got the packing done this second time I set everything up. And put away just before dinner. Radar shows a bit line of storms heading our way again this evening.
I've got one more errand to run and then I'm done for the night.

@doc henderson your mention of Skin So Soft quickly brought that smell, which my weird dog nose really dislikes, right back. The black fly season sounds miserable, but so does re-smelling SSS. Everyone at camp, when I was a kid, used it and just thinking about it makes me want to barf!

I got home today from work and I noticed my neck was all chewed up by them black flies. They musta got into my shirt collar and past the netting. Little black ballasts. ffcheesy
60° this morning, 85° now. Dry all day, no so called 'possible showers'. Was mostly sunny in the afternoon, but all sun this morning.
I had more sun then I expected.

Was in the mid 80's for golf last night but not as sweaty as I expected, thanks to clouds and some breeze. 'Twas quite warm in the house last night and this morning. Nothing like sweating in the shower. We have a whole house fan that no one but me will turn on and it does a great job at moving the heat out, but I got home too late to fire it up. Slept with no covering, which is unusual, but I'd rather not turn on the a/c yet.
We are on a boil advisory, what a pain in the butt that is. I take good water from the tap for granted, I'm finding.
Was 63° here this morning, and the moon was shining. I got down to work and it was foggy on the hills and there was a couple showers. Came home and the sun was still shining, some clouds, but 75°. Never had a drop of water up here.

Yes, rain here now. It has come down heavy at times and we've had lightning with it. :wacky: I'm interested to see if we get an actual inch + of rain, a real rain. Nice to have rain here, it's been dry. But this is usually dry here now, then June will be wet until the middle of the month. I've seen cold rain in June, tying ribbons on trees and my hands were freezing cold.

The bad stuff missed us but got the little town of Plevna about 40 minutes west. took out a house and debris was estimated to go 2 miles in the air.
Tornado outbreak tonight here in NW Arkansas. Multiple tornadoes hit. 23,000 without power. No damage to me but I'm running the generator so I can watch TV news.

Thermometer has been around 44° for the last 36 hrs. Nothing last night for rain. I hear a sprinkle this morning on the porch, but nothing to it.
At least we have no rain today.
45° and only about 10° warmer today and no sun.
There was a little bit of sun today in the afternoon. 55° I think. The woods was mostly dry from the wind out of the north. There was a shower or two early but you couldn't measure it. I think it's going to be the same Wednesday but not showers, peeks of sun. Black flies wakened up a little in the sun, but not bad.

After a night of hail, torrential rain, high winds, and a few pesky tornadoes these girls show up. Actually it's been about three days with bad conditions. I don't know how they survive. They were extra hungry and all seats filled at the feeder most of the day.
They show up at my feeder every year after flying from South American. I stand in awe of these tiny birds.
We have lots of them hummers, but they are not as sharing as yours Larry. One at a time at ours or they fight. One will stand guard at the honey pot and chase others off. I've seen 5 tag team it to distract the bully. ffcheesy ffcheesy
Like Jeff's forecast, just typical May up here. I don't put out plants in the garden here until mid June. Garden does better than those planted too early for the cold to turn sickly. ffcool Seeds don't germinate too good in cold wet ground. We won't warm up here until about next Tuesday.

Greensburg was totally wiped out about 10 years ago by a tornado and built back from scratch.
It's been cold and raw all week. I lit up the kitchen stove Monday and it's been running steady since then. Yesterday especially cold with a strong East wind. I lit up the basement stove at noon as the house was cooling down. I almost never run the basement stove in May! It is very unusual to have a several day cold spell this late in May.
Rain started about an hour ago, temp is 40. Warm in the house now with both stoves burning. They say 1-2 inches of rain before it's over tomorrow.
43 was the low last night here and the rain started around 2pm yesterday. It's 45 here now with a high predicted at 47°, the breeze will be steady out of the NE and rain off an on all day into tomorrow when it tapers or thins out. In short. it's not exactly pleasant. I spent a little time in the shop yesterday but it needed a drying fire to make it comfortable and I didn't feel like starting that mid-afternoon.
Today will be a different story. It's no going to break 60 until Sunday afternoon.
55 now with pred. 75 today. Rain and cooler weather mid 60s to 70s till the end of the month. more rain days than not.

60° days is cold to sit around the house in, even 70° is not all that hot. If you're working you're not cold. I can guarantee ya with them old kitchen wood stoves like my grandparents always had from Enterprise, there was a fire on in the mornings until the middle of June. My Grandmother had a cook stove.
I am sitting about 20 feet from one just like she had, Home Clarion.
The one in the old farm house has a crack in the oven.
Bought this one from a place in Maine that use to redo old stoves.
That is all she had to cook on. No electricity here until 1986.
In fact, that is all she had to heat that house with.
There is a big wood furnace in the basement, but I never saw her use it.

My grandmothers here had both wood and electric in my day. But mom's mother would still cook pies, bread, beans, cornbread and what not in the wood stove. She cooked a lot in sporting camps that grandfather ran, was always fresh bread and pies for those hunting or fishing. Most just came to eat, and hear old stories my grandfather would tell, didn't care if they got a deer, bear or a salmon. Even some were scared to death of a cub bear. ffcheesy ffcheesy ffcheesy ffcheesy My grandfather had some good laughs about that.
My grandparents here in Royalton built a new house in the 40's. Grandmother's brother wired the house. The know it all neighbor said, 'we'll never see power up this road'. Power was run up here the next year, even on the far end of the road which is now just farm road (was 4 houses up there). I still find the old electric wire on the ground in the old field beside the road once in awhile. The field had since grown up and was cut and now growing up again. I've cut about 60 cords of firewood out of there in the last 5-6 years. As the years pass by the trees get bigger. :sunny:

She lived on a dirt road, which is still dirt and, just about off another dirt road, that is not paved.
She always had a phone.
I don't even have cable here.
The only reason we have high speed internet is because of the state of Maine. The Governor wanted internet to all rural homes.
No cable here at all, all comes over internet on Sumsung TV and any apps on there. We get 5 over the air digital stations besides, which I never watch. No wired FiberOp internet either, never will be. I get mine off a tower by a local company. The tower has worked out fine for me. Can get 5G but I only use the basic package which is 2.4G. And those speeds are not steady, they control the speed based on traffic. Only other option is Starlink, brother uses that because he can't get tower reception.
Cold yesterday and this morning, I had a night off from golf and I wasn't upset about it at all, especially since it gave me the opportunity to have a very nice meal with several of my buddies that I don't get to see often.
Turned on the heat last night when I got home, boo. Was 41 on the way into work this morning. Supposed to hit mid 60s today, then be a beautiful 70 degree weekend! I'm excited, though it means weedeating and more weedeating and mowing.
We have about 3 acres of "lawn" minus the small pond and I knew when we were buying the place that weedeating would be pretty time consuming. Granted, I only weedeat maybe twice a year, but to do it well it's about 10 hours of it each time. I know it'd be less if I did it more often but uhg. I was debating last weekend if I'd rather weedeat or dig holes... I'm still not sure.
Temp is up to 42 degrees now, cloudy with a chance of light showers today. We had 2.1 inches of rain from yesterday and last night. Very little wind at the moment which is a huge improvement from the last few days. Both stoves burning now but maybe I can let the basement stove go out.
This is the start of the Memorial Day weekend and Memorial Day is supposed to be the start of summer!? :uhoh: :uhoh:

I have only found one tye of rain that falls harder than a Kansas rian storm, and that's getting caught above treeline in the Sangre De Cristo mountains in New Mexico. Dang that's a hard rain! It often turns to hail and that really hurts when there is no cover. OTOH one of my favorite songs of all time bears that same title. Something about these lyrics and the memories it dredges up just stirs my soul every time.
The weather here has been cold a crappy for 3 or 4 days now. Cold and rainy. I felt bad for the young folks just down our road having their wedding yesterday, and the party today, but the rain held off and the young folks were nothing but upbeat and grateful for the dryer conditions today. It sprinkled here and there and when the clouds socked in, the temp dropped, but then then sun would come out for a few minutes and warm folks up. Nobody that came to the party was inappropriately dressed for the weather, so mostly comfortable. Tomorrow hoping for more seasonal weather.

It was lovely enough yesterday afternoon that around 5pm I went out to the front porch to sit in the sun. My kids will occasionally move the backrest pillow to the arm rest and lay down and read out there. I was just enjoying soaking up the warmth of the sun enough that I took my shirt off and got a tan and a nap. I woke up around 745p, when the clouds rolled in and it started getting chilly. I don't take my shirt off often when I'm outside (big ol' beer belly and such) but I have to say it was beautiful.

56° here this morning. Rain is expected. Got to nearly 70° yesterday when we had periods of sun in the afternoon. We had showers after 11:00 am that came and went all afternoon, some heavy downpours. I did get some garden in yesterday morning, early: beats, dill, carrots, giant sunflowers, rosemary and basil plants, and put in one small row of yellow string beans. If it doesn't turn cold and real wet, the beans may do well. Otherwise, cold and wet will rot them as soon as they germinate. You take your chances putting them in before June 10th. ffcheesy I put down some textile and secured it with rocks to plant peppers and tomatoes in in June. I have tomatoes to pot over this weekend. :wink_2:

Yeah I saw it on the radar over your area, but can never tell what's reaching the ground. We are now at 1.6" and it's coming down goodly. SO much for my nearly drained and dried out swamp. I checked it yesterday and though I might be able to access it with my Mule again, but after this, it will be another several weeks at best.

Stopped raining around noon, we got home at 2 and I went out to finish working on the bushog. Got it done and went mowing. We use the bushog to mow the fields like a mower. The fields are wet. I was going down hill and I think I was spinning in the mud. ffcheesy

Neighbor's corn field finally came up Friday, was about 2 weeks germinating. I thought all the cold rain had rotted it. Not to worry, now I see the field is green with weeds to.
We had a second system that crawled up the coast and brought another 1/4" rain over night. Still drizzly out. Has not rained as hard as the first system.

Long range temps for June is 60's and 70's mostly, with the odd low 80's day. Also looks like lots of water all month. June is rarely a dry month up here. I remember going fishing with grandfather in remote areas of the province in June. It would be cold and wet without fail, cloudy with peeks of sun would be a good day. It resulted in a lot of driving and exploring and less fishing. That was a long time ago before climate became a topic of doom sayers. ffcheesy

We had rain, pretty much all week last week but it did not amount to much in the rain gauge. Then Friday night my daughter had a campout in the backyard and they got lucky as it stopped raining around 4pm. It's been pretty nice since and this week we're supposed to see low 80s today, high 80s tomorrow and Wednesday, then big rain Thursday. Golf will likely be canceled. My garden appears ready for warm weather.
Cloudy here all day, a couple showers to. Another day below 60°, and no black flies, but a few mosquitoes though, but not bad. The change of weather here seems to have killed off a lot of the black fly population for now. Was hardly a fly in the woods yesterday besides blow flies. We had 75°. :sunny: :thumbsup:
Clean bill of health here yesterday from the Oncology Doc following my quarterly cancer screening check up. Been a year since surgery.

Yesterday was a hot day, I saw 90 a lot, but it was dry until about 8 at night, then a quick thunder shower came through. The first one this season.
Looks to be 76 for a high today, clouds all day and maybe some more showers this afternoon.
We are getting smoke from the Canada fire. No blue sky.
It is raining. I have had sprinklers off for 2 weeks. the weather is nice for working other than water falling from the sky at times, mostly at night.
Here we go again! We are under a flood watch for today and tomorrow. 1-2 inches of rain today and 1/2-3/4 inches tonight. Temp is 68 now going up to low 80s. Yesterday hit 92. We just missed a thunder storm about a half hour ago. It was just north of us running along the Ma.-Nh. border. Lots of thunder.
We have had four days of no rain and things are drying out and I managed to plant most of my gardens and hope to finish today. Maybe I can if the rain holds off for awhile.

Actually been a pretty clear day here, just we didn't get over 10C. It's now down to 5 and dropping. Lots of fresh snow on the Mt, and they got the small club skifield open late this afternoon. With the cold set to stay for a couple of days they may get a couple of days skiing in.
Down South they have had a bit more. This pic came up on socials, supply truck heading into Milford Sound yesterday. That would be an interesting road to drive an H rated rig in that weather.

Don't think of a modern phone as just a phone. It's a pocket computer / camera / GPS / alarm clock. Lil's has an 8 core CPU, 1 tb of storage. and a 200mpix camera. Basically desktop PC specs. It also now has the ability to send txts via Starlink if it's out of cell coverage.
I go with the cheaper phones as that's all I actually need. I see the new model of mine is $NZ 229, with no carrier contract. Mines on a business contract, they would probably give me one if I sign up for another 12 months.

My town dodged a bullet yesterday. The forecast was for 1-2 inches of rain but we got none. Just to the north of us and just to the south of us there were bad storms. About 20 miles northwest of us the town of Orange closed down Main street because of flooding and they had hail the size of a quarter.
We did get a half inch of rain over night and expect more today but not much. It is not raining now, temp is 61 going up to 70.

Mine's lower mid range from what I can tell. Samsung Galaxy A36 5G 128 GB. 8-core CPU and long life battery, 45 W fast charging. Has eSim. Be here Tuesday. I know their top of the line is closer to CDN$2000, this is $600. I don't need anything high end. I have access to property maps, so now I can see them in GPS mode as I move. Has aerial photography. So better than Google, because the properties are all there. Need the app to install Starlink for finding the best location, according to their website. There's stuff I wouldn't do on them, like banking and online ordering.

I see some seeds breaking ground in the garden: beats, beans, sunflowers. Not much for carrots or dill yet, but I also transplanted some dill today that grew wild from one of the framed gardens, which will be more than enough for my needs. I read one time on the seed packaging that the dill doesn't transplant well. Always did here, maybe they need someone to show'm how. I bet they don't grow 6-7 feet tall in their garden eighter. ffcheesy

Was 65° here today, morning shower then dry until around 4:30 with more showers. Was nice day, but breezy. Those trees want to bend in the wrong direction when I snip'm off with the clearing saw. I saw a couple young moose this week along the highway fencing.
