I need some help, I can't seem to get my carburetor adjusted right, I can't get it to idle. Any ideas? Thanks
Does it idle too hi, or does it stall? How's the primer feel? Tell us a little more.
Oh sorry, yes it idles high then stalls.
Have you looked for air/vacuum leaks? Does it run and cut good at high speed? Is it only stalling out at idle speed or will it not stay running when accelerating.
Rock, folks can't help you with that little bit of info, there are a lot of variables. How old is the saw, how is the fuel line, what have you already done, how clean is the air filter, any other symptoms, and bad behavior leading up to this issue, how much use does the saw get?
Lots of details will help in figuring it out. So what's the history of your saw?
My 51 rancher had similar issues. I cleaned the air filter and they continued but splurging on a new air filter allowed me to get the carb set right. The old air filter looked fine and I cleaned it but evidently it wasn't clean enough.
Is that an autotune motor? I don't know, but I'm thinking maybe it's the husky version of a Jonsered 2252 ? Try winding it out to full throttle for a minute or two. Spike, correct me on this if I'm all wrong.
Not an AT saw. Jonsered version of the 455 is the 2255. (But there was a Jonsered 455 years ago) Sounds to me like it's sucking air somewhere or the screen in the carb is dirty. Fuel line or something with the primer 1st place to look. Does the primer feel normal and firm up after a couple pumps? Any gas on your thumb? I know that sounds silly, but it's the quickest way to isolate the primer. Does the fuel line fit tight on the carb nipple? That's also the 1st place to for cracks. Next place is where it passes through the fuel tank.
Apologies again for suggesting something so basic, but dump the fuel in a clean tray to inspect it. Will also give you a chance to inspect fuel filter and line inside the tank. Also gets rid of whatever debris might be in there. If you see a fair amount of it. There's a good chance a bunch of it is in the carb screen. And pulling the carb to check the screen ought to be done anyway.
If you've been frustrated trying to adjust this thing, settings could be way out of whack. So run them in gently. And back them out 1.5 turns each to reset your starting point.
Thanks for the input, the primer bulb is fine, I will get a new air filter this week and see if that helps. I felled 6 SYP with it today and got 18 nice logs with it and it runs and cuts great but refuses to idle. If the air filter doesn't help I will investige the carburetor. Thanks again for the help.
