Title: RHUBARB PIE
Post by: cutterboy on April 29, 2025, 07:07:37 PM
It isn't spring until I get my first taste of rhubarb pie.

My darling wife made this pie this morning and I had my first taste of the year at supper tonight. She gave me the choice of straight rhubarb or strawberry rhubarb. I like to have my first spring pie to be straight rhubarb and after that strawberry rhubarb is fine. And of course rhubarb from my own patch by the garden.

Boy o boy is that pie ever good!!!

REJOICE!!  SPRING IS HERE!!

My Grandmother made a fine Rhubarb Pie that I enjoyed when I was growing up.  My Mom never made one I reckon because we did not raise Rhubarb. ffcheesy

I bought a whole Rhubarb Pie at a campground somewhere in the Yukon on the way to Alaska, but it was no good.  I don't remember what was wrong with it, but it went out for a walk and never came back.  No good.   smiley_thumbsdown

My stepmother made killer rhubarb pies.
Seems early, what area is this?

Central Massachusetts. Two weeks ago my rhubarb poked up and now is eight inches tall. That is tall enough to cut six inch stalks and several of them will make a pie.

I'm jealous, can't remember the last real rhubarb pie I had.
Had a strawberry rhubarb in a restaurant not long ago but not fresh.

I had an aunt made rhubarb pies so sour you could hardly eat it.
One of us would distract her and the otherone would add sugar under the crust :snowball:

My rhubarb is up and already has a large seed stalk on it which I think is supposed to be broken off. I should probably do that. The seed stalk is hollow and can't be used. My wife used to make rhubarb pies but after having a stroke she doesn't cook any more. I guess I should learn how to make them but I'm pretty limited on my cooking ability.

Rhubarb is just breaking ground up here and I moved 3 more buds into the garden this spring from a spot it grew for 100 years on the north side of my spruce trees. Snow lays in there until later than other spots, blows in off the field. It melted out on the weekend. I make juice from it myself, looks like pink lemonade but better stuff. It does not have as much sugar as something like a can of Coke does. I like to taste the rhubarb, not sugar. Mother will make a pie and freeze for muffins or crumble in the winter. I try not to over harvest it, if you do the plant will go behind the next year and not yield much. Not everyone can make a good rhubarb pie, and also people have different tastes. Some folks up here eat it raw off the stalk.  ffcheesy

My rhubarb is up, but the leaves are still quite wrinkly, and the stems are only about 4-5 inches long, so I'll wait another week or so.

I was going to dig it up last fall to split the roots so I could double what I was getting, but got busy and never did it, maybe this fall!

My mother was conned into submitting a rhubarb pie in a contest.  Not wanting to win she intensionally left out a whole cup of sugar.  The judges must have been sick cause she won.

I much prefer rhubarb pie to have less sugar. Raw rhubarb is also what I like, so close to that in pie is a preference. My wife, bless her heart, had it down to perfection.

We've been eating rhubarb desert here for a week or so. Today I made two - one Litre jars of juice. A litre is a little bigger (5%) than a US quart.
