Title: Expired peanut oil.
Post by: CCCLLC on May 17, 2025, 01:32:06 PM
I've got 4.5 gallons  of expired/  unused peanut  oil. Thinking  of putting  it in the lubemizer.  Any reasons not to? Used some grape seed oil once at a large commercial  mill. Smelled good. Thanks

what is the expiration date, or is it rancid?  Most drugs as an example can go 3 years past the expiration.  one exception is tetracycline that can be harmful.  some drugs lose potency if old and especially if stored outside of usual home temperatures or in sunlight.  that is why some bottles are amber or even dark brown like albuterol.

direct answer, if you do not want to cook/eat it, give it a try if it is not too thick.  Now if you want to add it to fuel for a chain saw or bar oil tank, you may start a new oil war/debate.  and of course it would have ended up going back to food. ffsmiley   Most of the stuff we normally use is more of a cleaner/solvent so diesel works, but that oil may not be as good.  non petrol.  spindle cleaner and dawn soap are also more of a cleaner degreaser.

doc, could taking Tetracycline as a teen for acne have caused Melanoma in my 30's? I was already a redhead and sensitive to sunburn...just wondering out loud...thx

Oil will stick to the wood. Might make getting a perfect finish difficult unless you plane it a lot or plan to oil whatever it's made into.

I know it (normal tetracycline) can cause sun sensitivity with bad sunburn.  I think the old stuff is hard on the kidneys.  if you got many bad sunburns that can predispose you to melanoma, tetracycline or not.

In the pharmacy a large bulk pill bottle will have a real exp. date, but most pharmacies have a policy to call it a 1 year no matter what, because it may or may not be stored properly and this will reduce the potency faster.  If you get a 90-day supply, they see no reason to make it out to more than a year.  so, it is artificially shortened.  the biggest problem is it may become less potent.

Peanut oil I think would work. Would an emulsion of water, dishwashing liquid and the oil work?

The oils can't be be worse than diesel.

Appreciate  input. Think  I'll mix heavily  in diesel when needed in our pine. Spindle cleaner is my go to.

I can testify the effects of tetracyline can really make you have a bad day .I can count the times I've sunburned on one hand however after a doctor put me on it it went right in to sun poisoning .i fired him .
