Title: Semi Pseudo Retirement
Post by: doc henderson on May 18, 2025, 11:48:00 AM
Well, a few of us are moving on and so med. staff through us a party at Dr. Lairmore's winery.  He is a retired ortho doc and has the cnc I have shown here.  This is his winery, and he has a big telescope and does astro photography.  Dr. Slomka in originally from Poland and has just finished 25 years.  Dr. Degner is a pathologist and has worked here for 25 years.  So over 100 years of service in this pic.  This was for Amy and me, but lots of folks moving to the next stages.

folks here were mostly leadership.

The redheaded guy seated on the left, is Jeremy, and has been my lead scribe and just got accepted to medical school in Colorado.  He is prob. my 7th scribe that I wrote letters for that have gotten into med. school over the years.  I think all the girls on the right have had more wine, or at least know I was about to take a pic.

Me on the left, then Amy PA-C my lead APP also resigned, Dr. Slomka, Dr. Morris, Dr. Laubinger, Dr. Degner, Dr. Lairmore.

prob. a dozen very heartfelt speeches and some dad humor thrown in.  There were a few tears but we left those out of the pics.

Congrats on your retirement Doc!

Was just talking to a friend of mine today who is retiring from the IT field after many years. Make the most of your time and enjoy being able to do what you want to, not what you have to do.

More time for hobbies and travel.  will still work as few or many hours as I want and get full benefits.  they agreed after all my overtime shifts to take an average of 7 shifts a month to count as full time.  will see if it is a new medical assignment or go all in on working around the house.  I am part of search and rescue, and docs who care want me to work for them.  considering teaching at one of the medical schools.  Many things get left undone when you are working too much.  thanks. ffsmiley

Congratulations!
If I know you, we will soon be hearing that you signed up help on an Everest Expedition, or will sail the world, or solve some other of the world's problems.  Retirement is just a way to allow you to do more great things, I mean how many people's lives have you saved in your career and how many more can you still help?  So I expect you will not have your butt glued to the retirement recliner, but you will be full speed ahead, just in another direction.  GOOD FOR YOU!

Retirement was the one of the best things that can happened to a person, and I know you will have a ball with it.

Congratulations!  Well earned!

I've said it before - Retirement is an art.  There's all the financial stuff but using your time wisely, self care and care for others requires a creative touch.  When I retired I got all sorts of advice, "Don't do anything for a year."  "Get a routine established."   Blah blah blah.

Practice your art of living well - you do you!

BTW, our local doctor just retired.  There's a building and a pool of patients just waiting for the right person.  Just saying...kidding of course.

Congratulations

" Many things get left undone when you are working too much."

Don't expect to get caught up........ever.  I am realizing how much I let go while I was working.

there are some days I don't get much done, I am busy taking care of my dogs and myself.

As others have said, retirement is the best thing you can do for yourself. Enjoy it.

Well, you may be 'retiring' from your current workplace, but you'll always be Doc Henderson to us.
I found that my calendar filled up by itself when I worked. Now, you can choose what to put on that calendar.
Best wishes on whichever path you decide to go on.

Thanks all.  I am still working a few shifts, and also Chief of Staff till July 1.  I will still be on the board for at least 2 years as the post COS.  I certainly have flexibility to only work 1 shift a month if I want but will keep my skills up for the forum at least.   ffsmiley   You may have noticed some days I posted a lot and others I did not.  that would have matched my work schedule.  I am still a leader in the ED, but I do not make the schedule and am not the guy to fill in all the empty shifts.  I am taking a break from killing myself and will decide in months if I like not working or if I want to take a position teaching or working at the Children's Hospital again.  I could do urgent care, but I get bored there.  I appreciate the comments.  I did not think I would retire, but age is catching up with me as many of you all know.  I do have great hobbies and friends to attend to and am looking forward to that. :usa:

Work enough to assess what you might do otherwise.

I know from experience that one shift per week or month will suck you back in.  It happened to me and it has happened to Emily.

So hold the line on just how much you are willing to do.  They'll come to rely on you for more than you want.

That happened to me as a maintenance supervisor at manufacturing plant and when I was managing the wood products company.  What was supposed to be 24-30 hours grew to 50 per week. Had to quit cold turkey.

I am about to find out if this will be true for me. One more month of full time and I go to 3 days per week for one year, then full retirement. I've hired and trained replacements and am going to try to not allow myself to be sucked in. We will soon see how successful I am...

A little late to the party. Doc Congratulations on the retirement. It won't take long to not miss those night shifts. Pretty quick it will be eight years already since I was working in town. Its nice sleeping at night and not being on call or puling night shifts.

Congratulations Doc.  I missed your party because I practiced a week of retirement with Caveman, daughter, Aaron, and Cade doing a little fishing in GoA. I retired from working for a paycheck 43 years ago and went all in working for myself. I still work about everyday I am not doing something else. But I love the mill.  But I can take off whenever I want and leave Ian in full charge.  Next trip is NSS convention near Cobleskill New York, close to Howe Caverns.
Any FF near there, let me know, I can stop by.  Will be there over a week.
Doc, I think you will like working when you want to  and not working a job when you want to do something else.
I know you mentioned having a get together in Kansas.
That can take up a lot of time.  Ask Jake and Jeff.
I know you had a lot of fun in Costa Rica.  There is a lot more of that kind of stuff out there.
If you need someone to enjoy a trip with, give me a notice.
My next big trip is riding the Peace Trail in AZ with family and friends for several weeks  800 miles plus side trails is what they tell me.
As I say, life is a journey, enjoy the trip.
Again, congratulations on your semi retirement.

You are all correct.  I have been working physically and getting back into shape.  Medicine is a different kind of work, standing and sitting, and hopefully thinking.

I have been working on cleaning, organizing and insulating and sheet rocking the last of my shop.  got lots done with my buddy Dallas coming and diving in and dragging me along.  I will post pics in a bit.  the part that was not insulated on the inside between the studs, had 2 inches of foam on the outside with Drivit siding.  (fake stucco).  my wife is covering a paternity leave at a local clinic pharmacy.  She is also working on the landscape.  I would like to host an event when it does not take away from someone else, as soon as late this summer.  We have had several big birthday parties and family reunions every year for 17 years.  each with about 60 people.  I am trying to clean and organize the sawmill firewood area, and shop.  that will make it nicer.  In the past I worked and worked solving staffing and events like covid, and worse was post covid.

Thanks everyone.  I have been insulating and finally Sheetrocking the mechanical/welding/metal working part of the shop.  finished hanging the rock yesterday.  much is on wheels or pallets such as lots of metal.  it is 34 x 34 and still needs taped.  Jake you are welcome to start a fire at my sawmill anytime.  we have a firepit/combine wheel down there.   ffsmiley

Doc, you may have better results than I did but I haven't had very good luck with taping the sheet rock on my garage ceiling. After a few years the tape started coming loose. I haven't had any trouble with the tape coming loose on the walls. I thought maybe I did something wrong so a few years ago I retapped the ceiling and repainted it but now it's starting to come loose again. My buddies garage did the same thing. I used 1x4's to cover joints on addition I built and plan to do the same in main garage. I don't heat it all the time and I think that may be the problem. I did insulate it well and it always stays above freezing. Just something to think about as taping a ceiling isn't a easy job.

I guess the good thing about that semi-retirement is you don't HAVE to go in and work extra hours. Basically you are doing it was a favour to your employer. "Sorry I'm not available that day", is a perfectly good excuse. What are they going to do? Retire you again? ffcheesy

I'm officially 13 months from retirement, but only working part time. I've done ~18 years of "stay at home Dad", with part time IT work. Current boss (mail contractor) is probably going to retire and sell her contract this year. Depending on who takes over I will probably give it up, maybe after a transition period.

I'm just not up to full time IT support work any more. Too much like doctoring, but with machines. Give me a stack of mail and parcels, and a 50 mile drive to deliver them  ffsmiley

Bill, I have had the same problem in the shop, but I also take some time to get it finished.  I have been told to leave more mud under the tape and not pull it too dry with a knife.  also, a dust layer can be a problem, so wipe it with a sponge or damp mop to remove dust and moisten the paper to accept the mud.

I use self adhesive fiberglass open mesh tape when I do sheetrock, put on the joints dry as soon as the sheets are nailed/screwed down. Have had very good luck with it, going on 10 years on a storage building I built with no cracks or loose tape.

Paper joint tape is actually stronger than fiberglass mesh tape. I use regular paper tape on flat joints and the metal reinforced paper for corners. I find it makes a nice, crisp corner. It comes in a box that you can pull out what you need, cut to length and fold. This stuff -  BOEN - 2 in. x 100 ft. Metal Flex Corner Tape.
Title: Re: Semi Pseudo Retirement
Post by: doc henderson on June 02, 2025, 02:55:58 PM
I have and use the metal for outside corners.  I have used the fiberglass for cracks that keep coming back.  I had mostly used paper as well.  My left over 5-gallon pail of mud is sour with black spots. so, off to Lowes I go in a few.  also had a roll of the metal reinforced paper.  will have to look.
