Hey Sawyers. I befriended a nice older lady today. She sold me a load of mulch hay. Told me the story of her late husband who died a couple years ago. One of his hobbies was sawing. Had a nice sawshed with a mobile dimension mill sitting in it. She said the gas in it had gone bad and the mill vw motor is "dead".
I told her I might be able to help her find a home for it. So here I am. If you have any interest in a mobile dimension mill its located in Eastern Vermont. Not far off exit 13 on I 91
I can get more details upon request. It's under cover, the paint looked pretty good on it, I'm sure a good project for not much money.

You are right about that. Although I know of a few mobile dimension mills that were around here in the 90s. They are long gone now,.but from what I understand they are a really unique and effective way to break down a log. I really want to help this lady out. She has been up on her hill for 50 years and is now keeping the farm running by herself

Similar to the Peterson and Lucas swing blade mills, where the log is stationary and the circular saw blade moves along the log.

I looked at one once, it was an ex army 127. It had the smaller of the engine options but i can't remember the details. It was pretty rough cosmetically, took a bit to start, and then cut slow as a wet week. I assumed it was slow from a maintenance issue but it did cut, and the sizing was accurate enough.
However looking at the guys tube video I'd say the sawing speed was about the same and it was just lack of oompa loompa's on the hamster wheel. Those old vee dub motors might be indestructible but torque was never their forte and the extra help from the uprated motor would be useful. Mobile dimension are still in business and selling parts last time I checked.
I like twinsaws, the two I've owned have been money makers. They have limitations but if the job is dimension lumber IMHO they're hard to beat.

There was a MD mill at the Newark location that I did some work at. They used it to mainly make 4x6 stock for the pallet blocking market. It worked pretty good and had a pretty good production rate.
Max cut is a 4x12, without turning. They're designed to saw without turning. I think you would need to turn in order to saw bigger beams.
Several years ago Mobil Dimension was taken over by a young couple who aim to keep the parts and repairs flowing for the old mills and re-engineer and sell new improved mills.

One of my friends just bought a new production one a couple of years back.
Thank you chainsaw Louie for the you tube video link about MD new operation. I have always been fascinated by the MD sawmills and though I will likely never own one, it is great to see that they are back into production and even able to keep existing old units operating like original. Not many manufacturers making that claim these days. I hope someday to see one operating in person.
The only one I ever saw was at a show, if that counts.
That was many years ago, have not seen one since.
