I have been trying a few of the apps on the phone for tree ID lately. I have questioned the results of them several times. For example the same tree from 4 different directions was IDed as 3 types of tree. Several different bark patterns have come back as "Southern Red Oak" which I am guessing is the default for that's and Oak but I am not sure which one.
Just wondering what others opinions for the usefulness and accuracy of these apps are.
They are nice tools but tree ID can be challenging without other supporting clues.

These 7 leaves were all gathered from the same tree by a FF member in Delaware.

The undersides.
Where on the tree is also very important. "Shade" leaves on the bottom are often quite different, generally much larger. Also for example, lower Holly leaves have stickers whereas the top leaves are smooth without stickers.
I've only tried an app or two a couple times. I wasn't sure of the tree I was trying to ID but I was pretty sure the app was wrong, thus I've not used them much anymore. I'd love to see one the quality of Merlin the bird ID app.
Maybe when the bark on trees start to "bark", then the sound frequency signature can be used like the Merlin bird ID app (which is amazing) to our identifying benefit. ffcheesy ffcheesy
Haha! That would help beenthere!
I really like the VTree app
