Dennis has just been upgraded to a Cat 4 storm! :o :o Bets are better'n even that it will hit Florida. Just a few degrees of variation determines whether it hits the peninsula or the panhandle. We don't need this!
yup been watching that dan going to be an early and rough year their saying :-\
all you guys and gals try and be safe and if you need they'll be plenty of room from your northen friends ya'll know that. :)
Yeah Dan G, Been thinking all day about you and the others in this ones way... Stay as safe as you can...
The rest of us will keep yo'all in our payers, Jerry
Thanks guys! But ya don't hafta worry about ol' DanG. I know when to run, and which way. The big concern is for all them folks that THINK they have insurance. Them storms last season broke all the insurance companies, and there ain't nuthin' left to pay out. I'm lucky that I don't have anything worth insuring, so at least I ain't paying out anything. ;D ;D
Like my Aunt Evelyn said, "One thing about being pore, it's cheap." ;D
Hey get the "Hootie Mobile" under cover ! ;D
I think the Hootster will be good, Buck. I'm thinkin' of puttin' everything else under cover and puttin' the Hootiemobile on top! ;D :D :D :D
My county here ottertail county made the headlines of the weather a few weeks ago with 100mph winds for 10 minutes and made 3 foot swells on local lakes like one side was 3 foot higher while the other side of lake was 3 foot lower . I scored bigtime on logs and wood chips and firewood from tree services lookin for a place to dump but I cant even begin to imagine what it would be like to be in hurricane country and go through storms that last for days. When I see the weather channel and the talk of Dennis coming I just say holy smokes ! I heard everytime there is a hurricane there is also a baby boom ??? Get out ahead of time DanG and everyone else down there !

During the hurricane AND 9 months later! :o ;D
DanG it looks like it's headed straight at ya. We're all praying it loses it's power.
I read an interesting fact this morning on the weather channel....did you know that only three times in the past 100 years, has the coast been hit by a Category 3 (or better storm), in July? :P
They're starting early this year.
Just remember that you've got a friend in Pennsylvania if ya feel like taking a trip. :)
Biggest problem is, there's usually cold water out aways in the big ocean. That will sometimes break up a storm and push it NE.
THIS YEAR, the water is already HOT. ::) ::) ::) ::)
DanG,
According to the projected area I seen last night you are in the path of this thing, take care and dont wait to the last minute to leave.
GF
If the Gulf Stream is slowing down like they are saying then the heat has to get north some other way. Could that be causing more/bigger hurricanes ? ::) ::)
Well, things ain't lookin' any better this morning. If Dennis stays out in the Gulf, it'll be a Cat 5 by the time it gets up here. :o :o
Unless it hits right here, I'll stay put. If I hafta run, I won't know which way till the last minute. Not much I can do in the way of preparation. Just get the lawn chairs in, etc. Most stuff is just at the mercy of whatever comes along. Linda will be at work in a big safe building, so if I have to skedaddle, I'll probably team up with my parents. They'll be needing help, anyway. :)
Gee Dan I hope your luck from last year holds and all you get is some rain. Better lay in an ample supply of beer just in case it is worse ;)
Kepp your head down and skedaddle sooner than later if it comes to that.
Harold,
Go south young man!
DEEP South!
My opinion.
The people who say that the Gulf stream is slowing are the ones who have extrapolated a "fact" from a theory proposed by scientist studying the climate. It's not actually happening.... yet.... and may not. The theory is a big "if".
A hurricane exists because it gets its energy from heated water below. No heat, no hurricane. Because it removes this heat from the surface then the ocean will be cooler as it passes. It doesn't take the good old sun long to right things afterward though.
We have hot days and cool days, depending on a whole bunch of conditions at any one given time, but, the Gulf Stream depends on the thermohaline currents generated by the heated water cooling in the Arctic and falling to the bottom of the sea to return to the tropics. The demise of the Gulf Stream will depend more on desalination of the ocean and the affects that take place in the Arctic than from a "Breezy" day in the tropics. :)
Tom
I'm not sure that the Gulf Stream isn't slowing yet. Take a look at these links.
It is a fact that we are having more and bigger Hurricanes and as these storms are driven hot water in the tropics. 8)
Could it be that the Gulf stream isn't doing its job and taking the heat north? ::) ::)

We dont get them in NZ, C'mon down here, lots of room for nice folks.
Seriously though, take care and the Lord be with you.
If I had my shack done I could pick ya"ll up at the fargo north dakota airport and take ya fishin for dem DanG specks while the hurricane blows through down there! Specks & Taters for everyone , even hushpuppies now ! Oh boy !
My little brother just moved to Florida last year. He lives on a boat in the Tampa bay area (Tierra Verde), he doesn't even have a house (the boat IS a 50'er with 3 beds, 2 baths... but still). We are Illinois flatlanders. We have a tornado every once and awhile, but they come and go in a hurry. They either miss you completely or wreck everything you have in a few minute, out of the blue. I couldn't set and wait for a storm that is going to last for hours. He must love it down there, I'da turned tail last year, and this year isn't looking any better.
Just got the latest updates. The storm isn't as strong as expected, but still a big, bad one. Indications are that it will go well to the West of me, but I'm on the eastern edge of the possible track. TS force winds are predicted by midnight tonight along the coast.
My Brother-in-law in Pensacola just moved back into his house last week, and he has already evacuated. :'(
In the population centers along the coast, Pensacola, Panama City, and Destin, evacuation is in full swing. The roads will close when winds reach TS strength(39mph), because of all the bridges. If you aren't out by then, you're staying put! :o Linda came home from work at 8am and said I-10 eastbound is bumper to bumper. If I have to leave, that will NOT be my route. Gee, it's nice to know all the back roads. ;D
Daren, I'll bet your brother's boat is taking a licking about now...sure hope it keeps on ticking. Let us know how he comes out. Boats don't usually do too well in this kind of weather. Anything under 100' is in serious peril. The larger ones go to sea. That's much safer than being caught at dockside.
He took a job in the marina he lives in now, he stays right there and keeps an eye on everyone elses boat. I will call him after it cools down. He did run from one last year (don't remember which), they were calling for 12' surge so before he left he tied off high to the moorings. At the last minute it changed course and they had an 8' drop as it turned away. He had some tight ropes to say the least. He is a good captain and his boat is a solid old Hatteras. He stays up all night making sure other peoples smaller craft don't break free and hit him.
Its good to know that he's a seasoned skipper. :) Sounds like a good boat, too. When you posted about him, I was thinking, "Oh no! Another landlubber with a houseboat! :o" :D :D :D Even so, a 12' surge can put a 50' Hatteras right on top of your head! A crowded marina is no place to be under those conditions! He's probably ok on this one, as it got out to sea before it got too bad in Tampa.
We've had one little feeder band through here so far, then it cleared up. Very calm out right now. It is eerie to see the calm before the storm. As Woodbowl said in a PM to me earlier, "We're gonna have a new hair-do by this time tomorrow!" :D :D
I think it's monsoon weather here. :-\ (not that bad, just heavy showers) We need the rain though, ground is hard as cement and dry. And to think it only stopped raining 3 weeks ago. ::)
Just now getting the first rain from the storm. Been hot and partly cloudy here, all day. ::)
Keep yer hat pulled down tight, all youn's in the Path. I don't envy anyone of y'all. :o :(
Waaal now there DanG, me and CANTHOOK been putting Hurricane clips on his lumber shed all day and otherwise battening down the hatches, luffin the mainsail, trimmin the jib, preppin the sea anchor, and getting ready to man the bilge pump, and that's 30 miles inland. When I built my place I was aware of where I lived in relation to the hurricane belt and built accordingly. Partially in ground and in the deep woods that do well buffing the winds. We learned with Opal about emergency generators. I'm proud to say that my old Sears 5K supported 5 families to keep up freezers and pump water.
We're pretty secure here in Walton Co. and the flat-land furriners have done checked out. People bought up all the gas yesterday and seem to be as ready as they can.
Will advise as we can.
Back for a brief check-in between storm bands. The lightning isn't as bad as usual, but there's still plenty of it in the bands. Trying to protect the 'puter. :)
This storm has undergone a phenomenal transformation. The pressure in the eye dropped 11 millibars in less than an hour and a half! That is a record for intensification. The change won't be obvious by the wind velocity for several hours, according to the weather gurus. They are now predicting a cat 4 storm by landfall, which is still expected to be in the Pensacola/Mobile area.
Just got a bulletin that the first TS winds should be here in an hour to an hour and a half.
I have moved both vehicles out into the open, so if any trees fall they won't hit them. Now that I think about it, they are both clunkers, but are the ONLY things I have that are insured. ::) ??? Oh well, I might need'em. :D :D :D
I'll try to check in as opportunities present themselves. When I hear thunder, I'll unplug. If ya don't hear from me for 3 days, send a St. Bernard with a keg of Natural Light. ;D :D :D :D
Good ta hear from ya, Slabs. Put a couple of extra weights in the hem of yer kilt, would ya? I done put a extra dab of Gorilla Glue under me wig. ;D This here's gonna be a pretty good little puff! :o
Just in case y'all are interested, our TV station is on the internet. You can get all the latest at www.wmbb.com These folks do a great job of reporting and updating! 8) 8)
Hey DanG
We got a couple of TV stations in common too. My man is Jason Kelly over at Ch. 7
Yup, Jason is a good'un! I'm watching Amy Hoyt and Whassisname over on 13. That one just come's in better on my rabbit ears. ::) :D :D :D
Dang, We're starting to get some rain now. How bout' you? "Slabs" is about 50 miles from me to the west, your 50 miles from me to the east. Between the three of us, we got the hurricane covered. I don't know anybody out toward Mobile.---------Harold, what's the report down there? It doesn't look like your even gona' get your feathers ruffled.
Its pretty breezy and raining off and on at the moment. Y'all hang in there as we'll be thinkin about ya.
DanG... Are you sure you got enough gorilla glue??? :D :D :D
Sorry but I've not seen any St. Bernards come in for a bath so I won't be able to send ya the keg. :(
Talked to the little brother, he said it was not too bad where he is on the bay side. He went for a drive to the Gulf side and said the the sail masts of boats moored next to each other were banging together and one snapped while he was watching. He said this one doesn't bother him.
Hey Teri! How about a beagle with a 6-pack? ;D :D :D
Winds are now at 125mph, and the Hurricane Hunters say it may make it back to Cat4!
Local tv station was listing the proper shelters for various people to go to. Gen. public to this school, special needs folks to that church, etc. On the list, I saw that registered sexual predators were to seek shelter at the county jail! :D :D :D I know that weren't supposed to be funny, but DanGit, it struck me that way. Those folks think of everybody!
Too bad sometimes eh? :-\
It's official. Dennis is a Cat 4 storm! Winds are 135mph around the eye wall. Good news for me is, it is veering more westerly. That ain't good news to the folks to the west, though. I don't want to wish this SOB on anybody! Y'all need to say prayers for those folks. They're gonna have a rough time! :'( :'(
Maybe they are wanting to "gather em up" (the offenders) and accidently drop a hot wire in standing water.
;D
145 MPH winds. I can't even imagine that. My prayers are with ya'll.
Hey DanG, I'll see what I can do! :D :D :D
I just hope everybody makes out ok. It sure isn't fun from my experience last year.
Latest warnings show the DanG storm turning eastward :o :o :o
This is gonna tear up a whole lotta stuff.
Hope all the people out thatt way, get to some shelter, and all come out safe.
DanG, give us an update whenever ya can :(
G'morning. Not bad here right now. Light winds and rain. Storm is pretty well to the west of me. For some reason, this storm hasn't spawned the tornadoes that Ivan did. That was the biggest problem then.
sure glad you got that weather pc going dan ya'll be careful and safe now
got all of you in our prayrs thin mon. i an't got no beagle but i can send this here anckle bitter with a little nip if ya fet to dry ;D
Bidness is picking up here, but still not too bad. They have now advised us mobile home dwellers in our county to bail out. Can't do it, though. Worse to be on the road than to stay put.
Had a call from JeffB. He was on the road and saw a convoy of power trucks already headed this way. It was great to talk to ya Jeff, and I appreciate the call. :) Too bad yer crappy cellphone cut us off. I'm in a herrykane, and mine's working fine. ;D :D :D :D
TV station is getting emails from Iraq and Afganistan saying the soldiers there are watching the coverage on www.wmbb.com :) :)
Just got a call from the DanGster. 8) 8) He is doing well. Don't know about Woodbowl and Slabs. They are IN Harm's Way. :( :(
Hope you guys fair out well , Keep your head low and out of the wind ..
Glad to here that you are doing all wright so far .
Finally got my connection back. Phone lines went down several hours ago. The center of the storm has passed into Alabama, but it is still blowing pretty hard. We're getting about 25mph with higher gusts right now. Looks like more rain coming, too. Haven't heard from our Pensacola relatives, but they took a hard hit for sure. :o :o
We survived.............. 8)Got our hair parted on the other side but we survived. Even got lectricity and phone. Don't know about slabs yet. He's 50 miles to my west and about 60 miles from Pensacola. His wig probably ain't nowhere to be found. What we've got in my area is lots of water and more on the way. By the looks of the radar, DanG has a pile of water too. He's gona' have to roll his britches legs up just to see if the mills ok.-------The wind is still whippin' pretty hard even though Dennis is in Alabama. Thanks for all the prayers.
Glad to hear that you guys made it ok. Been wondering all day.
We be fine, Teri. Ya can cancel the beagle wit da sixpack. I was able to slog over ta tha shop and git tha 18pack I had stashed in tha beergerator. ;D
Found out Dennis did me a big favor. There was a big ol pecan tree right next to where we're gonna build the house, that was showing signs of being less than healthy. Notice, I said "was". ;D ;D Yup, it's on the ground, and the top is right about where our bedroom will be. I was dreading having to take that thing down, too. Started out there with the camera, but there's too much water on the ground. I'll get pics tomorrow.
Glad to hear y'all are ok, Woodbowl. Wish we could hear from Slabs. Things probably got pretty frisky over his way.
Well, now it looks like you guys' little storm is heading for the Hoosier State. We need the rain badly up here, but I have heard forecasts of up to 12" next week. :o I think we could handle 6 or 7 inches over three or more days, but I donno about any 12". Might get my feet wet even on top of this big hill!
Hi Yall
I'm proud to report that me and CANTHOOK got by without a scratch. Even though we were about 60 miles away on the bad side the most we can complain about is the trash in the yards. We were surprised as to how light the wind was and how little rain fell. Must have been in one of those voids between the bands. Soon as things dry out a little we'll be looking for ways to get into trouble again.
Hey Olen-Gordon said hi.
Glad to hear y'all made it through OK :)
I won't mind the rain you be sending up my way. We really need it.
Alright!!! 8) 8) 8)
ok i waited to make sure you all check in glad to see ya'll weatherd this one :)
Great to hear you all survived intact.
Hey slabs, good to hear yall made it through Dennis. We were beginning to wonder. It's real bad for folks to lose during a huricane. My buisness always picks up about 3 months afterward.
Well its FINALLY raining a little here. We have not had rain in almsot 7 weeks. Crops are pretty well lost but with Gods help we may salvage something if this huricane can dump several inches on us.
Initially they were saying upwards of 6 inches. Now there speculating 1/2 inch or so.
Glad everyone made it through the nasty stuff, now pray it dumps all that moisture on us. WE NEED IT!
Kirk,
Same here west of St. Louis. Mo. It is raining now. Not sure how much we will get.
Good to here all made it through the hurricane.
Ron
Well, POOT! >:( Here I thought I got away with no damage, then I found this today. 14" dbh yeller pine capsized upon my DanG power line. This thing ain't but about 40 feet from the house and we never heard a thing, nor did the power so much as belch. It snatched the weatherhead right off of my pole! Cost me DanG near thirteen bucks! I'm gonna call FEMA! >:(

Is that the dead pine we were looking at the other day? Seems like you got two dead pines that need to come down.
Naw, that was one of the "good" ones. I tried to post a second pic, but something happened to it. I'll try again. I think we had one of them little twisty-twirly things come through here. As I cruised the neighborhood, all the downed trees seem to be right in a row.
One of those pines must have impacted ya on the head.....why does your avatar say "Do NOT eat grits" ???
Hidden Dennis damage ::)
GOT IM :D :D :D :D
Roxie, you'll hafta read the "Grits cookoff" thread for that one. :D :D :D My position on this issue has changed.
Probably due to harrassment by the deep south folk. You guys only think you are southerners....
They's a differnce between Southerners and Furriners. ;D Besides, if you weren't a Furriner, you'd be a Yankee. I don't reckon you put any salt on any of that stuff you eat, do you? Oh yeah, you have somebody to do that for you. ::) ::)
I ain't sayin' nothin'. ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::).................. ;D
Nope...me neither... :-X :-X :-X .... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I hate to say it - but the salt clumps together down here due to the moisture. :'( I am actually learning to live without a salt shaker, which had been nearly a secondary appendage.
I am not a foreignor, DanG, just as much a citizen of the USA as you are. I am a foreignor here, but there, I am a member of the DEEP south. :D Unless something really strange happens - like I get thrown out the USA for giving gritty people a hard time...
Hey, I still make my own coffee! I am not totally decadent down here. ;)
The flip side - which FDH and tell you - I am chained to a computer during the week and then on the road visiting the fincas Friday and Saturday and also with visitors. They feed me like a prisoner - and are concerned I won't have enough strength to do all the work that piles on me if I am not fed.
I see the grits debate is spreading over the forum just like a batch of too watery grits spreads over your plate....
Okay - to show my honesty, etc, etc I will make a confession. My dear wife - who's family has been in Western NY for 350 years, informed me yesterday that GRITS will be on our shopping list for things to bring back to Costa Rica from the USA in October. Oh, the shame, the shame. :-[

;) I am in complete agreement with your new stand on grits eatin. Best they leave the good stuff for those with discriminating taste buds. :) Anyone who knows understands that eggs without grits is like Meatloaf without mashed taters, or spagetthi without the noodles, or a hot dog without kraut, or a burger without the bun......CAN you eat it? Yes. Do you WANT to? NO.
Grits are like a symphony....with the correct accompaniment, just a pure pleasure.
Hey Crtreedude! Why doncha poke a few holes in the ground down there? Ya might discover some more oil, then we won't hafta waste all tha Grits making alkyhaul. ;D :D :D
Y'all gotta come up with something. Grits is all I can afford ta eat, and if'n the price goes up, I may hafta resort to extreme measures, like sellin' my body or workin' or somethin' drastic like dat. :o ::)
You can eat the way the campesinos do down here - rice and beans with some fruit and fresh avocado.
No need for grits for fuel - we have palm oil - and they are researching turn it into Bio-Diesel.
Not much oil here except off shore. Back in the time of the Dinosaurs, there WASN'T a Costa Rica. This is young land - from one hill on the farm, on a clear day (yeah - right) you can see SEVEN active volcanoes.
Now, don't be doing anything radical like get a job or nothing....
But, perhaps you can sell your beard for a wig.... ;D
GET A JOB?? Perish the thought! Given the option, I'd rather WORK! :D :D :D
I guess ya never heard the old truism, "Once you cross the Ga-Fla line, the further South ya go, the further North ya get." :D :D
Y'all got enough palm trees down there to make a diff? :P There's a big demand for them around these parts. It seems everybody thinks ya gotta have palm trees so folks will know they're in Florida. The transplanted ones don't hold up very well in a Hurricane. The convoys of power trucks won't be off the road yet when the influx of trucks hauling palm trees will start. They'll stick'em in the ground and they'll blow over in the next storm. Apparently, they're more important than building materials, since folks can't get roofing shingles. They can get a palm tree, though! ??? ::)
I originally grew the beard for a transplant, but with the way it turned out I changed my mind. I'd look funny with an Afro! :o :D :D
Fred Dan might sell his body fer grits but i know there an't know way know how he'll git rid of the beard :D
We have tons of palm trees - where do you think the oil for your popcorn in the movie theaters comes from? We don't get hurricanes either - too close to the equator. In fact, we barely get anything more than a nice breeze.
Haven't been in a theater in prolly 15 years. Didn't eat the popcorn then. They don't even pop their own around here, anymore. ??? ::)
Did ya know ya could make Grits outta popcorn? ;D Don't need the palm oil for that, either. Then ya could sell the palm trees to the yuppies in Florida to plant beside the road, over and over and over! :D :D
DanG said,"I originally grew the beard for a transplant, but with the way it turned out I changed my mind. I'd look funny with an Afro! "

I dont agree Dan you are stylin ;)
It looks like that is where DanG put the popcorn....
Gee thanks, Buzz. I think I'll just keep the ol' polished dome look. :D :D :D
Besides, my face need the beard more than my head do. I've had the beard so long I don't even know how many chins I have. :o
Sorry, but I am won over once I saw THAT..........Ah now thats a bunch of hair.................

You ain't right, Buzz. Ya just ain't right! :D :D :D
Ya know, over the years I've heard a lot of guys complain that their wives "just don't understand." Well, I gotta tell ya that my wife understands...PERFECTLY! :-X She understand's that I'm sitting here on my butt, jaw-jacking with you lot of miscreants, when I'm supposed to be out there getting something done. I'm gonna go out there and move some stuff around with the Hootiemobile, so things will look different when she wakes up.(She's working nights) Of course, if I keep doing that too much, she's gonna start wondering why there's no money coming in. :P :-[
:D :D :D :D :D
Buzz.... I'm thinking you have waaayyyyy too much time on your hands!!
Teri
Dont make me dig up your pic...... ;)

I want to see Teri's pic, I want to see Teri's pic Buzz...........Show Teri's pic! 8) 8) I only saw her for 5 minutes at Harolds and already forgot what she looks like. ;D ;D ;D
Hey DanG
I think we do well with our native palmettos. Let the displaced members of the northern tribes have the transplanted palm trees. You can even eat the bud in the end of the palmetto if you're "REALLY" hungary. Tried it once at reserve sumer camp in the Ocala National Forest. Never been that hungary before or since.
Oh yeah! Swamp Cabbage! They ain't so bad if ya know how ta clean'em. Sorta like Mudfish.
