Title: Site Meter
Post by: Jeff on September 23, 2005, 02:36:37 PM
The Forestry Forum uses a free sevrice for keeping track of hits and things to the forum.  It has a new feature that takes the ISP information of the visitor and lets us know what town (approximately) the visitor is from. This records guests and members.  Its pretty wild to see how diverse we are. Here is a sampling of the last 100 (not counting the ones since I started this post) :) Is one of these you?? 8)

Some of these overlapped as I was gathering them and occur more then once, but it gives you an idea.

If I was to do this 12 hours from now, it would be very different.

My IP will likely translate to Edmundston, NB which is 1 hr and 45 mins away, north bound. I've seen the non-numeric ip address in irc and it always gets displayed that way with Edmundston in the ip (abreviated). ;)

Well I just tried it on irc and I get a different IP, I wonder when they made that change?

Anyone can look at the sitemeter. The link is at the bottom of the page. Any page.  Its in the blank white area just avove "Forestry Forum Rules and Disclaimer"

There is another new feature as well. A map like our members map, but it records the last 100 visitors and puts them on it, so guests are on there as well. Again, it just estimates locatiopn by ISP

There may not have been anyone from Lewiston, Idaho.  It lists my ISP at a town 100 miles away.

Unless you have another person posting from Costa Rica, I guess that one is me - but I am no where near Cartago - that would be 6 hours from here!

Oh well, usually people think I live on an Island in the Caribean...

Ya know, I was talking to family Labor Day weekend about wanting to move down there, and my Uncle spoke up and said I'd have to cross the Bermuda Triangle.
I said "huh"?
He said "ya gonna cross it".
I said "show me how".
He holds up his hand and says "here's Florida and ya go across it to this island here".
Me (with a smile on my face) "Mmmm Hmmm, you don't know where CR is do you"?
Him "yup, it's an island out in the..........".
I just cut him off and told him the truth.

Up until that point Fred, I thought you were joking on that fact, but now I belive ya! ;) ::)

Well... I am on an Island... it got that much right.
It just got the wrong island  :D
I'm guessing it would actually pick the registered office of your ISP in most cases.

I noticed a town about 30 miles away had some one on line as much as me, then it dawned on me that it probably is me! :D Must be as Ian says, that's where the ISp is origniating from.

Yep, the Island of Fred... But doesn't it say, No man is an island ???

I wouldn't mind owning an Island off the coast of Costa Rica though. Nah, I really like the mountains.
