Title: New Member On Deck
Post by: 3584ELK on November 05, 2005, 06:14:05 PM
Howdy everyone!

I am a country boy by birth, owned my own firewood business at age 16, and was a faller at 18.  I went on to a career in aviation.  However, I am back to cutting firewood for home use, and now own a Stihl 310 MS.  I have owned a Stihl 031, 045, 056 Super (my fav) and a an 041 Farm Boss (hated it).  I suppose I am here mostly to read about how things are done nowadays in the industry and pick up a few hints.  My family and I recently brought home a few pickup loads of 8-10" diameter poles.

Welcome 3584ELK.

You can certainly pick up good info here and possibly learn something too.  It's not all work here though.  Sit back and peruse  5 years of posts.  It's relaxing and fun.  :)

Answer me this.

How come so many folks are putting all of thosenumbers on their userID's now.   I've seen some that are nothing but a long string of numbers.    I figure that might be a birth date or something else you feel worth noting but never did figure out  the need to use so many numbers.  It would confuse me.  :D

Perhaps they don't want to be known to be associating with the likes of us?  ::)

Welcome!

Welcome!  You've landed on a fun place.  Here's a warning though:  if you want to get any work done ever again, then RUN FOR THE HILLS!   :D  This place tends to become a little addictive.   8)

Welcome 3584ELK
That 041 Farm Boss has been my most favorite saw. Bought in '75 and just keeps on runnin and runnin. I have a new MS361 and use it only because I feel I should use it with the anti-vibe and the safety brake. But for a running saw, and restarting it on idle when its already warm, it doesn't compare at all to the 041.  Never been a problem.  Guess they are not all the same.

I would say so.   Brings to mind 35 to about 49.  :D  You might stretch it into the 50's a little but you'll have to smile when you say it.  :D

Welcome Elk! That's a mighty big herd....over 3,000. Wow!  I suggest the best way to get started is to start reading the thread called "Funny Stories". It will give you a flavor of the Forum. We love to learn and have fun too.  I hope you like grits! 8)

The member ID has to do with hunting and shooting.  It is my favorite caliber for elk hunting, thus:  .358 4 (for) elk.  Yeah, I agree, it has to be something special to the user.  Additionally, I am signed up on all my other forums under this name and it is easier to remember one user id as opposed to several.

Well that's a good reason.  I didn't associate the number with a caliber.  :)

I don't know.   You gotta watch a fella real close when he's smart enough to talk two languages.  :D :P

Well, so much for you all trusting me - I know three languages. English, Spanish and I am fluent in Sign Language.

We won't talk about how many computer languages I know.

It's okay, you noticed that I didn't say I did any of the languages very well...

As I tell people here, I speak Spanish just fine, it is just that people have problems understanding me.  :D

I know what you mean.  I worked real hard to learn New Jersey when I was in the Navy.    Had a shipmate  from there and we were always talking "at" each other.  There was usually someone in the Division that would interpret when they saw that we were having problems.    I worked at it real hard

The problem was that, when I tried to talk New Jersey,  I confused him and the interpreter too.  :D

Why do you think FDH is so hard to understand? He has lived in NJ, AR and Florida. It all gets mixed up in there and strange phrases comes out...  :D

Post by: Fla._Deadheader on November 06, 2005, 11:24:27 AM

Being from "TRUE" American stock, I've had to try to communicate in several languages, myself. European "English", "Joisey" Yankee, "Hillbilly", Arkansas, and a mixed bag in Florida. NOW, you give me a hard time tryin to sypher Espanol. Maybe this esplanes why it gets jumble up, at my age, EH ??  Oh yeah, that's Canadian.  ;D ;D :D :D

:D :D :D :D You just think so. We will get Marcel to teach you his version of Canadian then you can hop over to Newfoundland.
Title: Re: New Member On Deck
Post by: Tom on November 06, 2005, 12:14:59 PM
I haven't studied Marcel's Canadian and don't think I would do a very good job with it.  We have, though, been training Marcell with "Mississippi", especially the Yazoo dialects.  He's understanding a pretty good bit of it now, I think.  :D :D

Well,  Tom,  I could teach you about half the spanish language (in one word) that you would need aboard ship to talk to those yankees :D :D :D

The SOKIA don't take in no 'pelota de m.........s'  :D :D :D

stop all this nonsense, please.

I come to the FF because I usually understand the language.
growing up in and  living in a country where you don't speak the language is a tough life. I know this from first hand experience, I have lived in California my whole life, and I don't speak Spanish.

This is about the best I could do at the moment.

Want you to cease spitting me above while you speak!  Have you a head has to make jump the manhole covers!  One rocked you too much close to the wall?  And the annual forum gathering is ' Boucherie' with the chart leave-to make soup of the day

deja vu all over again. :D

Reminds me of being back aboard ship.   Is this some kind of New Jersey? :P

Yeah, Florida is that way too, Solodan  :D

Voulez-vous cesser de me cracher dessus pendant que vous parlez!
'Would you stop spitting on me while you're talking!'

T'as une tête a faire sauter les plaques d'egouts!
'You've got a face that would blow off manhole covers'

On t'a bercé trop près du mur?
'As a child, was your cradle rocked too close to the wall?'

And the annual forum gathering is 'Boucherie' = Pig Roast

à la carte = each available separately

laissez-faire = leave it alone

soupe du jour = soup of the day

:D :D :D It was funny reading some of your interpretations :D :D ;D

A couple of months ago i made the 2hr drive to the valley to go to The Home Depot. I was completely lost once I got inside, everything was in spanish, I mean everything. every sign was written in spanish, with little English translations underneath. I thought perhaps I had been in the mountains for too long without T.V.

I swear, these threads have more curves than a fer-de-lance! I had to check up at the top and see what the original thread was about - after a while they all wander into various topics. Grits, snakes, oh, and even sometimes, wood!

Wood ???
What's wood?
Title: Re: New Member On Deck
Post by: SwampDonkey on November 06, 2005, 05:54:34 PM
How much wood would a woodchuck chuck
if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

A woodchuck would chuck all the wood
that a woodchuck could chuck
If a woodchuck could chuck wood.

But, a woodchuck can't chuck wood.
So a woodchuck wouldn't chuck wood.

;D

SwampDonkey,

Are you trying to tell us that a woodchuck is the official mascot? I thought it was the piggy of honot (i.e. the one served the first Saturday of August.)

Just trying to figure out what you all are trying to communicate down here...

\

My "go to" elk rifle started life as a Winchester Model 70 XTR Magnum in 7mm Rem. Mag.  After I wore the barrel out, I had it rebarreled to .358 Norma Magnum.  It now wears a synthetic stock, #4 Lilja fluted barrel, and a Bausch & LOmb 1.5x-6x scope.  It has shot groups as tiny as .423" at 100 yards and it knocks elk down like nothing else.

Welcome to the Forestry/ Food Forum there Elknumbers.

I am new here myself, so I really can't say to much, other than I spent entirely WAY to much time on here. Here in Maine there is a saying..."Gotta get it done before snow flies." Well snow has already fallen and I have not got anything done, well except for post a 100 plus replies here.

Welcome aboard in any case.
