Title: My newly built solar klin in Qatar
Post by: alsayyed on November 19, 2005, 06:41:06 PM
Finally I have finished building  air drying or   solar klin after two months of research and design. I have built the klin using 2x2 inch steel frame welded together. I have covered the steel frame with ½ marine play woods. The height roughly 9.3 feet and the length 10.3 feet and the width 9.7. For the ground left as it is sand I am not going to use concrete for the time being till I experiment with wood drying processes I wait for the result.
I did not follow the rules of longitude or altitude direction so I have faced one side to toward the west and the other side to the east. The sun rises from the east and  sunset to the west so I have plenty of sun from both direction. I have placed a sheet of plastic on the top and screwed the sheet to the wood as you can see on the picture. I have closed the door and left the door closed for 10 hours It is hot inside I can feel it and smell the heat and said to my self I wish I had some wood inside., so total cost of the this whole projects roughly   $ 500.
The most cost of this project is the marine wood it costs around $ 20.27 for the ½ inch.
I have ordered a new chainsaw but still waiting for the arrival. Once it arrives I will experiment by slicing the logs.

Having visited Qatar a couple of times, it would appear most of the Qatari national forest is in your back yard. What will you do for wood?

well next time you come, give me a call. i have this wood and I am trying to mill them and do lots of things with them. I have many projects done with these logs. But since I have built the Klin I will get good wood and no cracks anymore.
