Earlier this fall the company temporarily closed it's sawmills in Plaster Rock and Juniper (nicknamed Jupiter :D ). They've resumed operations today. May the sawdust fly. :)

Yes, JDI does have their own railroad and in most cases they bought it because of the forest lands, but also for cheaper transport. In the day, the railroad company got 1000 acres for every mile of rail they laid. Irving later got alot of that land for $0.50/acre when they purchased the rail road company (NB Railroad Co). Irving doesn't have any mills in Carleton and Victoria counties, but they do own small parcels of land here. Some of those were Dead River Company lands.
Fraser is selling off it's Freehold lands in NB, over 700,000 acres. The government is considering buying it.

I hope St Anne sells off some land, we have 140 acres of cutover land they own adjacent to our property, it was cut last winter during the bankruptcy and I have my doubts that is on record with the mill...

Where? Most all of it, mostly in Northern NB in Victoria, Madawaska, and York Counties.
They sold over 300,000 acres in Maine last year.
There answer is: they are using the revenue to upgrade their pulp/paper operations.
My answer is: It's cheeper for them to use crown wood, plus the government pays 80 % for their silviculture on crown.

I wish you luck. If your successful you may have some planting you can do and some future thinning, subsidized by the government silviculture program. It's rare that you'de get a chance to get ahold of industrial freehold. Even Irving has little parcels all over the place.
My friends grandfather backs on a little parcel of irving freehold, they gave him permission to give sleighrides through it during the winter. He heard it is scheduled to be clearcut this winter. :(
A few years back Crabbes bought a piece of freehold behind my uncles' and cousins' lots, from Frasers. It was around 600 acres, it's all a brush pile now. Can't figure why a softwood mill would buy a lot with mostly hardwood and poplar. Well now it's obvious, certainly wasn't for logs for the mill. That made alot of people upset. It also reduced the waterflow of Cockeron Brook (The Indian Brook) substantialy. >:(

Family and neighbors have spent alot of time on this trail along the brook. It has been widened (brushed) and now there is a small camp on the back of my cousin's lot. It was a logging road used in the 60's by the Ralph Sadler Lumber Co (still in business).
