Why does a Stihl 046 magnum and a MS460 have more power than a plain 046 the bore, stroke and rpm's are the same what the different ???
A couple years ago Stihl changed the way they named saws. They moved the 0 from the front to the back and then added 'MS' in front. So the 046 became the MS460. This applies to ALL of the Stihl saws. There is no other difference (besides typical minor upgrades from one model year to the next).
There are differences in porting and in the airfilter base, allowing more airflow.

I think that happened a year or two before the change in model number.
As I remember it the 046 went from 5.6 bhp to 6.0 bhp about in 1999, but I could be wrong of course.

Correct my friend.
What year did they stop making the o46 ???
About 2001 if memory serves.
I will take a look at the documentation I have, and come back to it.....
Correct again, my friend...if my memory serves. ::)

I purchased a used 046 and 5.6 or 6 bhp seamed like enough power either way and the saw was in good shape. The saw was to be ( a few ) years old this would puts it at present power level MS460. Is there a visable difference between the 5.6 and 6 bhp saw ???
the muffler, one was normal, one was dual port
