Title: Pig roast
Post by: highpockets on February 25, 2006, 09:25:11 PM
I can't get this pig roast thing off my mind.  We do them fairly often here in Louisiana. Of course it is based on who has a pig we can steal.     :D

I had ideas of trying to come.  Problem is, I don't know where is, when it is, and if I need to bring a hog?
My bride decided that we needed a travel trailer about three years ago. It has been out of the yard three times.  I kind of wanted to just take off and come that way but am not where or when. Thing is I am afraid that she will be back in school (teaches) during the time of the roast.

Who from down this way plans to go?

We technically had a first Forum get together without the pig in 2003. The only ones here the night before was Chet and Judy, Onewithwood and seems someone else. It was the 100th anniversary for Michigan Forestry and we used that for the first forum party.

I am assuming it is still at Higgins Lake on Aug 9th?  I don't have a calender that has the days numbered so it is easier to ask.  Actually I thought it was farther but looks like about 1220 miles the way the highway flies.   How much is diesel?

Joasis, I've been thinking about the same thing.  I was thinking about somewhere around Mena Ark or
Fort Smith.   I talked to Jacque ( my wife) and she said they would most likely have to start back to school somewhere around Aug 14th so I think Mich. may be out for me.   If she insist on me going without her,  well maybe we could work something out. How long can you be gone?

Speaking of hog cooking, I am going to get an 80 lb. pig in the morning.  Dressed and ready for the fire.

I would love to go, but I don't have that much time to commit. However, if you get the circle mill from Kevjay, I will make time to come and meet you guys when you set it up. We can always spare a weekend. Let me kow and we'll get together realy soon.

I have been batching it this weekend, and the pig sounds good.......maybe, just maybe...I will let my wife make it up to me when she gets back and cook and clean lots...for the mess I :D have been making....

Sounds  8) that you guys are already planning for the BIG PIGGY EVENT.....  I just wish that I could attend but I am not going to be financially availabe to make it to the event.  An income I have goes to living and towards my monthly therapies in BC.

Is there someone that would be willing to make and sell videos of the Piggy Roast 2006?  I would be more than willing to purchase a copy.  Sounds like it could be a very good fundraiser for the FF.  Copies could be made and sold especially to anyone of those who could not attend.  Heck I am sure that everyone would purchase atleast one copy. ;D ;D  Just a thought.....
Brad.

Last years video would have been of a bunch of guys running around in red  T shirts with a little dog not sure which way to go.   The little dog should be at this years Piggy Roast as well.

Yeah, except I think I need some eye drops to get the red out...  ::)

Perhaps Harold and I will be able to fly up there for the piggy roast - or perhaps come up with another plan.  ;)

It's hard for me to plan that far ahead but, Lord willin I would like to plan a vacation for me and the wife and make the next one. I don't have any idea what there is to do/see up there though.  ???
Not that it wouldn't be worth the trip just to meet you kind folks, but I'm just thinking we might as well make a mini-vacation out of it and see a part of the country neither of us have never seen.

We have a travel section where there has been several posts made on things of interest in Michigan. NORTHERN Michigan.  Nothing against Detroit, but thats a different world down there...

Have you ever Seen the Great Lakes?  I hadn't except for Great Lakes Training Center and an afternoon in the Loop at Chicago.

I got to see Superior and Lake Michigan and Lake Huron and the Mackinaw bridge.  That's a reason to go all by itself.   I got to see a water powered sawmill and an Indian Reservation intact with Casino.  :D  I got to eat in a quaint little town with a good restaurant that served a big hamburger.  I took side trips through cedar swamps, saw pure, clear, running water streams.  I saw trees that I couldn't recognize, I can now, mostly.   And,   I saw the SOO, souix, ...uh !   The Sault Ste. Marie and the Soo Locks, big ships and tugboats.

Man! There is lots to see.

Highpockets,
I think it is actually 1210 from your house to Harrison, Michigan, so that ought to save you a gallon of diesel. I don't know why your so concerned about the diesel, since you have that 250 gallons you bought when the price was over $3 a gallon. You can just put that to good use!!
Actually, the west side of Arkansas sounds better and better to me. Hopefully you can count me in if you decide on something around there.

Sandman,

You don't have to tell the world about that diesel. Actually it was $3.26.  I only use it on Sundays.

I think I flew over the great lakes on a cross country trainer once. We left out of Mobile, went to Sacramento, up to Portland, over to NYC, and back down to Mobile. I don't think that counts though, I bet I was asleep ;)
I knew a diver from "the soo". He was always talking about it. One day I  asked what this "soo" was. I finally figured out it was a "place". A real noun. :)
I also knew a guy from Wisconsin. Bein from Texas and young and dumb I  always heard it pronounced "west- cawn-sun". He was always correcting me. "It's proncounced Wiss-cann-sun Tex!" I learned alot while working for uncle sam and meeting all those different folks.

I would like to meet some more. No kidding, for a long time, I always imagined "all those people up north" were pretty much the same. Yankees. Well I have met alot of them recently because there are a whole bunch of them down here now. I ran into one yesterday at the chinese resturaunt after church. I said "Rich how long you been down here now?" He said ever since I mett your sorry butt in '85." I said "are you a nturalized Texan Yet?" He said "Hell no I'm a *DanG yankee and I'll aways be a DanGed yankee!"  :D
We are pretty good friens actually.
I think I forgot what I was trying to say.

We try not to discriminate against Yankees in Oklahoma, but we are considering making them get a  green card before they can enter the state. smiley_big_grin3

So Kev, are you going to sell the circle mill to Highpockets? I still haven't made it out to the big cedars yet...maybe this weekend... :D
