This is the float the diver takes, so I know when and where to drop the tongs, when he finds a log

My son, the diver, catching some WARM sun.

A nice (24") log coming up from the bottom. Notice the 10" of sand and mud on the log.

Good job, Jeff
WoW Yer way doen there. do you know fidel? ;) :-X
Not personal like. Been to Cuba, though !! Nice place if they would get some money and the economy going.
One of the most memorable vacations I had was a couple of summers ago when my father-in-law took my wife and I on a trip down the Oklawaha River from the dam to the St. John's river and back. We were in his pontoon boat and just idled along all day. I never did see any of those logs though. I reckon it was cause I was so busy looking at gators, birds, fish, turtles, wild lillies, wild hibiscus and marsh mallows. A vacation like that beats the heck out of paying to stand in line at the likes of Disney World.

Thats slick the way you have the boat set up! 8) 8)
Great pix! :)

Hey Charlie. That looks like the guy that hangs out at bend #7. The section you mentioned is the stretch we are working. You probably didn't see any logs, cause ya weren't lookin fer em !! Every time we go upstream we see 1 or 2 we hadn't seen before. Usually, they are junk.
I posted a single log pic a while back, where 2 guys were lookin it over, laying in the bedding area. That one was floating !! It is nearly all "hole". 16 footer.
Lived in Fl for 16 years, so far, and have NO intention of going to Disney. Biggest bunch of lying, deceptive, land grabbing, politician buying, uuhhhh, Don't get me started >:(
Funny thing that you mention junk logs. I saw felled cypress now that gets pulled from swamps on farm land that is bigger than the growing trees I'm asked to saw. These are "tops" of trees cut at the turn of the century Uh.... ... the other one.
These are the tops of the cypress that were left in the swamp. Back then they cut the tree down and lopped it off at the first limb. The rest was left as junk. Now we are pulling the "junk" and it's as good as what we are growing.
My, how times change. :)
Some of the logs we get are tops. We gave one to the manager of the fishcamp we stayed at, originally. It had a crotch with 2 9 foot "limbs" that sawed out 12 inch wide boards. The rest of the log gave up 16 inch wide X 11 foot long boards. The side of the log had been eaten away by Teredo worms and the guy that sawed it wouldn't buy "that junk" !!! He is a "new pine" sawyer. Says that the "good" old logs are GONE. YEP, can't argue with reasoning like that ??? :D :D
Got any pitchers of some of them junk logs ???
We DO need to get together for a visit and compare notes.
Pretty cool pictures Fla. DH.
Does your diving son have to worry about
critters with sharp teeth in the river?
Is anything that you can find in the river considered
public domain?

Hi Whitepe. The toothy critters won't bother you till "mating" season. Then, just keep an eye out for trouble brewing. Haven't heard of anyone being bothered yet, but????
All we can take are logs. Anything else has to remain on the bottom. Any artifacts should be noted and then call the authorities. Then, YOU can dive for the stuff and hand it over to them !! YEAH, RIGHT. If I can't have it, I AIN'T diving for them, FOR FREE !!!!
Are those trees "leaners" that have fallen in the water over time? I have some on my property in Ohio, and the wood has a lot of tension in it from leaning over the water for a few years then falling in. I don't know about Cypress though.
UUHHH, no. We are not "supposed" to take anything with roots or stumps. We are only allowed to take pre-cut timber. Every day, while riding the rivers, I see MANY trees that have been washed out and blown over. Can't touch them, either. Such a waste !!! Had a US Navy Forester on board when we did the pre-recovery survey, and he asked
"what makes these logs so valuable"? I explained as best I could. I then asked why the Navy doesn't have timber sales? He says, I try, but, no-one shows up!??? He then asked, how would you price the standing timber ??? Don't you need SOME edicashun to be a "Forester" for da gov.??? :D :D :D
It's still good to see someone doing "Underwater Logging". Well done. That warm water sounds good compared to our 35-38 degrees in Lake Superior. We don't have the "sharp teeth" critters to worry about though. Could you ever mistake one for a log??
Ron, read my post under "Lost My Diver".
I just read it and it answers my question. A scarey experience for the " underwater logger".
He said it "startled" him, more than scared him. I've had the same thing with sharks. They just "Appear" and you don't have time to be scared. It REALLY get's yer attention, though. :D :D :D :D
I've had experience with sharks, moreys, and barracuda while diving, but not so sure I'd want to meet up with an alligator or crock on 'their turf".
