Title: We got SNOW
Post by: Weekend_Sawyer on December 06, 2002, 07:49:54 AM
About 6 inches in my area yesterday. I took out the Skid Steer with the bucket on. I don't have a plow blade. It worked great. We don't get enough snow here in maryland for me to justify buying a plow blade rig for it. Even with just the bucket it can really clear some snow.

This picture was taken last year but this is about what we got the other day - about 2" of slick snow. It's still hanging around where the sun don't shine.

ARKANSAWYER e-mailed me this morning and said his power was out for two days.  Got ice, then sleet, then snow.
I just figured the only outside phone line to Arkansas was out. ;D

I've d#*! near a foot of the crap at my place!!  Haven't blown anything out yet though.  I like to drive over it so it packs and freezes solid.  That way the blower doesn't dig in to the ground.

I got mostly snow about 6" then ice at the end that took out the power for a day, but not much noise from the woods.  Michelle is down the mountain in NC got mostly ice at her Mom's and lost power for about the same, said trees really got taken apart down there.

We got about 4 or 5 inches last night.  It was some of the lightest fluffiest snow I've seen in a long time.  Some guy on the local news last night was using his leaf blower to do his driveway :D  Funny thing was, it worked just fine.

It must be real cold ther then.   That is what Alaska's dead of winter snow is like.   It rifts over the roads and is hard to move with a snowblower as it just flots right back!   Spring and fall we get wet snow, when it's not as cold out like 25 to 32 above.

It's 43 right now hear and all the trees are buding out and my green grass will need cuting soon if this keeps up around hear, it's like its spring!

Weekend_Sawyer,

We're ready for snow, but nothing yet.

Funny thing is we are 250 mile straight north of BibbyMan, and 600 miles north of the Arkansawyer, and they have snow.

ElectricAl,
Will that skid loader pick up that V blade?  And can you move it if you get it picked up?  Looks like a lot of blade for a skid loader even if it is a JD.

Dewey,

Our JD skid loader will pick and carrie the V plow. We have never tried to push snow with it though. The plow has two sets of fork pockets. One set is for the JD and fork lift, just to move it. The second is a wide set for our wheel loader.

The V plow is a blast to zoom down the road. It's like the parting of the red sea.

I never quite understood how those things work.  I know that they push snow or rather lift it and direct it to the side, but it takes speed and they are usually running on hard-top, right?

Looks to me like you could be comfortably running along at 30 mph throwing snow to the side of the road when you encounter a dip or hole, or raised driveway entrance or intersection and the snow plow could dig into the pavement, tearing up the blade, the pavement and sending the operator through the windshield.  :D

That's just the image that this old Florida boy conjures up.   How close am I?  :) :-/

Dang, can you imagine running out of gas, going to town to get more and returning to find 20 miles of snow piled 10 feet deep where you thought you had left your car?

Whadaya do, wait till spring? :D

Tom, I can't speak for V-plows, I've never operated one. I bought our Dodge in SD when my old truck died. It was one of our homeowner's and was set up to plow. Their land was a few miles back from state maintenance and the first coupla times we saw it was on skis. He bought the truck just to get us in and get started. His college age son came out to plow never having seen the road before. Some time later he came walking over to the job we were on, seems there was a little curve in the road he wasn't aware of, explains the dent in the drivers door, it was buried to the windows, luckily no worse.
In the early spring I had left the plow on just in case and was tooling down the hardtop at about 50 when I hit a big missing section of pavement and was launched airborn for a moment, the whole way back down I was envisioning groundlooping the truck...the springs on the blade just tripped though :D.

Reminds me of the time years ago when a neighbor 'helped' me plow our road.  I kinda like to be snowbound and not have any traffic.  This was before we milked so I had no reason to plow the road but my neighbor just insisted that he had to get out.  I had an old horsedrawn grader and pulled it with a 10-20 McCormic on steel.  I usually just set the blade and took off but Ken wanted to ride the grader and work the controls.  We were doing great until I hung on a rock and launched him into a drift.  We got the road plowed, put chains on his pickup and headed to town.  I filled my wife's grocery list, Ken bought a fifth of whisky and a carton of cigaretts.  His wife was a little irritated when she found out we went to town and he hadn't asked her if she needed anything.  They no longer live down the road----or together.

We're in the 6-9" range for accumulation.  That's not deep enough for me to plow.  I just run the lane down in my truck and that does fine.

Back in '96 we had a 32" snow.  That took 2 1/2 days to open the lane with a front end loader.  After it was opened, we had another 12".  It was getting to the point that there wasn't anymore places to pile snow.

Every time they talk about snow, people have to run to the grocery store and get their white stuff - bread, milk, eggs, and toilet paper.   :)  I've never been able to figure out why they need them so bad during a minor snowstorm.  Those folks are mainly the city type that move to the rural areas.

Tom,

Our V plow is simular to most I have seen.

There is a steel runner or ski in the front center. The runner extends about 12" forward of the blade. Then towards the the rear, near the mount are two big pads that carry 80% of the weight.  Each side of the V has a cutting edge. Our plow was a rural county plow that worked gravel roads, so the actual cutting edge is 2" above grade. Only the runners touched the road.

As far as mail boxes, there as good as gone,
if you want too.;)    DanG that's funny

Around here well casing filled with concrete will get you a letter from the postmaster delivered by the sheriff.  :o

The V plow is made to punch a hole in big drifts or deep snow. It's the quickest way to open a road. Later a straight blade unit will finish rolling the snow back.

Here is a shot of the fork pockets. The big pockets for the wheel loader might be hard to see, they are 5' apart and close to the ground.

The square tubes you can easily see are for the skid loader or the all terrain forklift.

A couple years ago one of our local maintainers clipped a small white car sitting in a drift. The car was at the bottom of a hill on the side of the road. The maintainer was running a CAT 6 wheel drive road grader in high gear as fast as it would go so he could make the next hill. The V plow pushed the car off the road, and the wing took the roof off the car.(https://forestryforum.com/smile/Wow.gif)

It is not the snow that is the problem it is the 1/2 inch of ice under it that makes it crazy.  Trees and power lines are snapping and it is good for business.
They got the one line to Arkansas fixed and all is well with the world again.

Back in '93, in the last century, we had what was called "The Storm of the Century."  It was a real blow, as others here can attest. Anyway, I was in S. Carolina that weekend, and had to lay over an extra day. As I was coming down through Georgia, the next day, I got stranded at a convenience store for 3 hours, while the county folks BUILT a snowplow, then I followed it at 5mph, for about 40 miles. There is something to be said for living where you get enough snow to be prepared for it. It can really bring things to a screeching halt when you ain't used to it.

Park your car in the E-lane in Alaska in a snow storm and when you come back for it all the glass will be gone and the inside packed FULL of snow! :o   The plows hear run 35 to 55 MPH with a frount blade and a belley blade, the wave of snow from the 1st blade brakes all the glass and the 2nd fills it with DIRTY salty snow!

Tom
On truck type plows ther are big springs holding the blade upright so when it hits a manhole or something it just tips the top forward till the blade pops over it.

It's quite a sight to see a plow running the other way down the road at night at 55mph with both blades down grinding red hot on the pavement casting a line of snow and sparks to the sholder! :o   Then after it go's by your car gets hit with a spray of roadsalt, just for kicks. :)  OOOOooooow Dats gona rust! :'(

Yeah, the sparks are awesome! The scary thing, tho, is when it's night and the visibility is poor, because those blades are HUGE, you can't see the edges, and the plow doesn't get over. It's working, where it's working, and YOU have to get out of the way. Juggernaut. :o :o  lw

We have alot of folks from up North retire here and we get a bit of snow like this and they laugh at us and tell us they know how to drive on snow.  Years ago as a teenager we got a good one and I was out putting chains on my truck and cleaning off the snow.  The Guy from next door opened his garage door and started his car.  I walked over and asked where he was going.  He said to the Post Office to check their mail.  I told him the roads were slick and he quickly informed me that he knew how to dirve in snow as he was from up North and this 2 inch snow was nothing.  He backed out of the garage and down the drive across the street and thourgh the neighbors yard and into the shed by the garden spot.    It was impressive at the ability of them Northern drivers on our southern snow.  I walked over and asked if he was ok, and he was cussing mad.  He had never seen an inch of ice under 2 inches of snow before.  "Happens all the time here" I told him "And in a day or two it will be gone and I will tow you out of Mr. Johnsons shed with my 4x4."  ;D

Came back from Nam in Nov. of 1970 and was sent to Ft. Wainright, Alaska (Fairbanks) on New Years Eve where it was -45 degrees. Ended up with 187 inches of snow that winter. They had snow blowers the size of self propelled silage cutters we have here. Plugins in every parking lot.
Me and three others bought a 1962 Chevy Impala two door sight unseen. It was under all that snow but gauranteed to have had the water drained. It took us a couple of days to dig it out then we had wheels.    8)
NOW THAT IS A LOT OF SNOW

P. S.  All is clear on the western front.   ;)

Nothing for me but a few inches and that is evaporating off fast.  I snowmobile and will be driving to Gaylord MI to get some time in next weekend.  That is one of fthe highest elevations in MI and they get substantially more.  I was stationed in Rapid City SD in the Air Force.  They did not get a lot of snow as in inches like we do here, but the darn wind blew ALL the time and created drifts around any object.  We had the B1 bombers stationed there so they had to keep the runway clear all the time.  Those are some monster plows and blowers.  I had to ride around a weapons storage area with a guy one time and he reminded me of the guy who's haulin "rocket fuel!" in the movie with John Candy.  I swear he stepped out of the cab to clean the window while going 40 through 4ft of snow.  I loved to watch when the sun came out and they used the blowers, those beasts sent a shower of snow 100 ft in the air and across the runway that looked amazing.  There was more than 1 occassion we got called where a car had "accidently" been picked up and mangled and blown to pieces.  They do not use salt out there on the roads but sand I think.  I never had a rusty car until I moved to MI.  Here we get Lake Effect, wet and deep.  I can hardly wait!  JB

We went a couple of years ago and bought a video of the snow plows in action. These pics are off the web site, but that is one big snow blower. 500 horse-power, 12-cylinder Cummins diesel engine. The video shows them blasting away with TNT before the snow blowers came along.

Don't be too quick to come up snowmobiling.  Gaylord has about the same amount of snow I do.  I'm 16 miles north.  The trails around here are chewed down to dirt.  With the warm temps forecast for the middle of the week it'll be mud.
Dad has driven a county plow for many years.  He could retire anytime with a 30 day notice but got promoted to Foreman a couple years ago and is having too much fun now.  He says he's going a year from May.  I've ridden with him in his plow.  It was a IH Paystar 5000 with a 392 HP Detroit.  It would throw snow.  A lot of the time you can't see when you're driving one of these rigs.  It's all done by feel.  Different times after a good blow he'd have to stop on occasion and shovel the hood off.  That's with a right handed plow.  It's extra bad with the left handed plows that are used on the express way.  Some of the big plows have trip springs on them but not all.  It'll really throw you if you hit a soft spot and the plow digs in.  Back in the late seventies one of the guys Dad worked with died as a result of injuries sustained when the plow dug in and the truck went over the top of it.  The guy riding with him did recover but not with out permanent impairment.  The truck was totalled and the plow looked like a culvert.  It's especially dangerous in the spring after a thaw and then a big storm.  Things are really soft under the snow even water puddles that aren't frozen only covered up can throw you when you hit them at 50 miles an hour.  Dad really hated/hates messy driveway plowers.  They plow snow across roads, leaves piles on the shoulder etc that freeze hard and really cause a jolt when you hit them.  The last truck he had was a 1999 Paystar 5000.  Really nice truck.  400hp Cummins and an auto tranny.  Dad thought he was in heaven after driving the old one with the screaming Detroit and 13 speed tranny.

Yes I have been to Pikes Peak.   We have a steem powerd blower like that that still works the White Pass line to open it up every April.   It has no way to move it's self it is pushed into the snowpack.   Thay take a run at it and go till the blade stops and back up and get another run.

Hear is one neer Anchorage you can go in and check out as close as you want to.   It's no longer used in this part of the state as thay now keep the lines open all year with plows.

Thats 18 hours of DARK night, Tom. ::)   It's not all that much fun when sunup is 9:30am and sundown is 3:30 and when it's up it's so low in the sky you wish it would go back down! :(   Ever had rush hour in full dark with an inch of ice on all the roads?  (https://forestryforum.com/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fsmilies.networkessence.net%2Fs%2Fcontrib%2Fcorky%2Fcorkysm60.gif&hash=8a47f667bb2caea4d761c52feee9e682e42b5b3e)   It can get fun like that but the good part is in summer it's light all night long, never gets dark just dusk!

The kids hear just sit in the nice worm living room and play there X-box things, no need for no curfew when it's -10 outside.   Just TRY and PUSH them youngons out the door without the car keys, thay get like a rabid dog!

We are having to postpone Christmas till the roads are better.  I bladed roads today and only went in the ditch twice.  Michael was coming over to take Carrie to his family's Christmas dinner but turned around and went home because the roads weren't safe.  Our son Dave is still in Columbia Mo. waiting for the roads to clear.  My Brother is supposed to come from Nebraska today but havn't heard from him.  Our oldest son Tom left this morning for Springfield.  His mother-in-law is in the hospital there with serious health problems.  Hopefully it will thaw out today (it's sunny and really beautiful with all the snow).  We will be extra happy when everyone is home safe and sound.

ARKANSAWYER, I think you have had quite a bit more snow this year than we have.   We have onley got 18" all year and ther was nothing on the ground friday when the rain started then after the sun went down 10" of real REAL wet snow.   Strange winter up hear this year!!   The Iditarod guy's were wondering how to run the race without snow and the rivers still running swift, ther right happy to see this snow.

Well here we go again.  We got 7 inches Thursday and I woke up to 3 more this morning and it is still coming down.  That makes about 40 inches for the winter and we get most of our snow in Feb and March.  You boys up north need to catch this stuff as we have had enough.  Due to the Space Shuttle I did not hear if the Ground hawg came out or not? ???

I cleaned the snow off the house roof today, all 15" of it, and weather report says there is more coming tonight. Also cleaning up and repairs after a frozen water pipe last week on one of my heating zones. The first such hapenings since living here.

ARKANSAWYER,

I hate to be the one to bring you the bad news, but you have not seen it all. It is probably snowing over your way now and looking at the seven day, you will get rain by Friday.

We just got about an inch of white here today but a friend called about 40 miles away and had 4 or 5.

My pastures and front yard are doing the ice thang. The one cow that got stuck in deep snow 2 years ago obviously still remembers. If she puts a foot into deep stuff- I mean DEEP- you will see her just back right up. Who sez cows can't learn from near-death experiences?? Still got open water for them in one little spot where it keeps flowing. it's probably the net heating effect of the septic systems up in Darbick Terrace that keeps it going :-X :-X

Arkansawyer,

We have had a whopping 6" all winter. Last week we had two days in the 50's.

Back in 1973 we had a snow storm that got everyones attention.

On our farm we had a 21' drift on the road 1/4 mile long. The county grader could not push through with the V plow. So we waited 3 weeks until the state brought in a CAT dozer with a V plow. Took two 8 hour days to open the road for one lane traffic.
And (they) say "the good old days"

They're calling for -5 to -15* tonight. Man, I am getting tired of this!

BUT- it is light when the alarm goes off now, aand sometimes I make it home in time to do evening chores in the daylight too- and the sun is getting stronger. The ice on the trees wasn't TOO bad in the last 2 days- I thank God it wasn't another ice storm like the one a few years back. We lost so many trees that time.. the wind got to whipping on Sunday night and about 6000 people lost power- mostly in York Co. I was real surprised we kept ours. I had just one branch go down in the front year, and it's from a humongous tall pine that really I should prune the lower brances anyway. Haven't bought the right equipment yet.. ::)   lw

SNOWING NOW!  Has snowed the last 3 days and is to snow the rest of the week.  High in the mid 20's and lows in mid teens.  My logs are frozen with every thing else.  Have to put a milk house heater under Wanda for a few hours to get her to start.  All this snow and cold weater will make the white bass run late and it will be to nasty to walleye fish and then it will mess up Turkey season.

Yea, it is snowing now, been snowing lightly all morning. We have about an inch over what did not melt, mabe a foot was left on the ground.

We are supposed to get a real good snow tomorrow evening.

Just finished doing adjustments to the skidsteer and oiling my snow shovel.

I find that a coal shovel works best if you are going to be shoveling all day. Doesn't wear you out as much. One day last week I shoveled my walks out to where the skid steer could start clearing, shoveled Dad's walks and the old lady up the street called, she was worried about her flat roof, so I went up and shoveled a couple of hours for her. My brother called and said  one of his company presidents would pay us $100 ea to shovel out his car and walk!!!!! I did not to much the next day.

I am still off work but work finds me!

I lived in Canada for awhile but snow sound really away from me now.I live in Rio de Janeiro again, my home-city, and it is 45 celcius degree here. And the nicest thing is that during winter we get arould 15 celcius degree the coldest!
Any way, sorry bother you people with my summer.

I've got a friend that lives in Sao Paulo and is a professor at the University of Sao Paulo.  (Yea! Really I do!)  She has been to the USA a good many times on business trips but always in some big city.

She came to Madison, Wisconsin one early spring to attend a conference there.  Mary and I went up to visit with her there.  We took her out the Mary's aunt's dairy farm where they also run a bed and breakfast.

As we were driving out,  the temperature started to drop below freezing.  We had a thermometer in our car and Rosa kept taking pictures of it.  When we got to the farm,  it started to snow.  Rosa was nearly in a panic.  She had never experienced snow and was almost afraid to get out the car.  It only dusted the ground and didn't last long but it was a big deal for her.

I'll see if I can find one of the pictures.

Welcome to the Forum Fabiola.

We got a good sleeting yesterday morning and not the temps are around 30 degrees and there is a fog so thick you could drink it.  I remember in Alaska at about -30 we would get a ice fog like this and in the day light it would look like glitter floating in the air.  I like this better.
Another chance for snow tomorrow.  I would shoot the ground hawg if he could get his head above the snow.

Well, I've been a mite busy. We had the last 2 calves on the 1st and 4th of March. April had the sense to calve on the morning of the 1st- nice warm day, no problemo.

Daisy, OTOH, waited til 0130 on the 4th- it was -11*F and just like 2 years ago, baby would steam but not dry. I even took the salamander into the shed and got it up to about 80* but even with plastic over the windows, as soon as I turned it off, the air would go opaque with the fog, and it was clearly evaporative cooling. I'd gotten out there just as the little one was born- still half in the sac- and mom and I worked for an hour. By then it was 230am, and I was going to have to get up to go to work at 530- so once again it was time for the calf to come inside by the fire. This one was a little more spunky than the last victim- she kept mooing. Laid still, but wasn't quiet.

About 530- right on time- there is this immense CRASH- so I go zooming into the living room. Baby has stood up and fallen over out of the sled. I scoop her back in and dress madly. Up she stands and goes over again as I am getting my boots on. So into the sled again and off through the living room, the library, and out into the yard- where out she goes again, getting a little more spunky this time, standing up and not wanting to be picked up. So I tried walking her. Back legs worked great, front legs still in plow mode. So into the sled one more time, this time upside down with her eyes rolled up in her head. I said 'that works for me!'- and off we went the last bit into the shed, and dumped her out. She sprang right up like standing and walking was old hat- wobbly but doing it- and tried to figure out who was mom again? Mom had no problem with that.

Now she's 2 1/2 days old and as near as I can tell, both babies nurse both moms and nobody cares too much. The calves run around madly- hard to say how they can do it in that little space, but they do.. I can't wait til pasture means green and not white.

The snow is so high that the cows are walking over the fence. I had to put extra wire up in several places. It's going to look really funny when the snow all goes away (that'll be after the big flood..)   lw

We had a galvanized stock tank in our mud room when I was a kid, if we had one that wouldn't dry down or mom was new at it and wouldn't nurse easy,  in the house it would come. Us kids thought it was great fun, we would bottle feed it and keep the heat lamps from burning down the house. Doesn't sound near as fun now, good job on keeping the new calves alive. This winter has been hard on livestock.

If not fun,it sure must be rewarding to bring them around like that. It's cold and blowing snow outside right now and it helps me appreciate what you must go through.I've been around calving, some, but not to that degree.

I had 11 heifers do it on thier own and then we get a big cold front and had to pull two in a row. One was a black baldy and was big. That wasn't supposed to have happened. Guess we had a fence jumper. At one day old, I was moving the pair out of the nursery pen and the little feller tried to butt me. He's gonna be a good one.

We haven't had cattle for years but you folks that are calving right now have my respect, there is nothing worse than losing one that you have worked so hard to keep. I know most folks that raise livestock around here are having a hard time because of the cold staying around for so long but even worse is the up and down temps, seems to be harder on em.

I always think that the animal rights people ought to be out there with folks like Haytrader and LW, having to pull a couple of calves or staying up all night waiting, to learn what nature is all about.

Mid march, calling for another 4 in. of that white stuff again. The snow is now tickling the crotch of your pants. A sunday drive in the car, is to look at snowbanks taller than you standing. The skidders just jump and spin, the snow is all powder and to dry to pack a trail. Snowmobiles can't break a trail either. 28 inches of ice on the lake, but because of all the snow,, there is a good layer of slush. well the weekend is supposed to warm up some. I have a Boss V-plow on my ford pick up, if anyone is in the market for a plow, I highly  recomend this unit. I haven't met a road I couldn't open up yet. Well all this will soon melt, the sun will shine, we will strip our parka's off, have a good tug of fresh maple syrup. then we'll stretch out and start slapping black flies, while trying to reel in a speckled trout. Ah life in Canada..burlman

Post by: Bibbyman on March 29, 2003, 06:09:27 PM
Mary and I ran away from home this morning.  It was about 40 degrees when we stepped out the door into a snow shower.  It was snowing off and on all the way to town.  We stopped in at the local quick shop to get Mary her first cup of coffee and I snapped this picture.  Flakes were about the size of jawbreakers.  We made a wide loop from mid-Missouri to Quincy, Ill and down to Louisiana, Mo and back home – running into snow a couple of times even though it was in the mid-40s. One time it was especially heavy with high winds - almost a white out.

Later in the evening I did some cleanup work with our new Terex loader.  The sun would come out and I'd soon pin the door back to cool off.  Then another snow shower would hit and I'd have to close it.

Chet,

Heard about your recent heavy snow. My sister cancelled her planned visit there this week-end because of it.

I'm coming up there tomorrow for a couple days to pick up tree marking paint at Nelson's Paint Company, visit mother in the Care Facility at Crystal Falls, and then up to Michigan Tech for a couple days for an SAF session on "Invasive Species". Hopefully that snow won't still be a problem.

Stop by the "office" if you get a chance and if you see the white Toyota PU there.

I, and probably others, will be interested to hear what you learn about "invasive species" at the Forestry meeting. I assume the "species" they will talk about will be those growing in the forest, and won't be the human kind. ;D

However, I think that the "species" sitting in the redwood trees as being "invasive".  ::)

My little cousin, Johnny, who lives in Louisiana, says that the Cajuns fish from a 14 foot Pirogue with a 100 horse outboard.

You have to stop to fish.

The 100 horse outboard is "to get away".  :-/

Those guys are fearless :D

I have been working night shift. I don't sleep too well during the day so I was laying on the couch waching a little of the O's game. I must have nodded off and woke up to see the pitcher standing on the mound with his hand inside his short sleeve shirt trying to keep his hand warm and it was SNOWING! The day before we were walking around in t shirts and today it was 65.

 Maryland is a confusing state!

Just returned from a week in the U.P. Shoveled 6-8 inches of snow each day while there. Left Houghton, MI early afternoon on April 4 due to heavy snow storm.

Arrived in Cadillac last night with more snow here also after recent ice and snow storm. We were getting ready to rake the yard when we left. Now "blown out" of the woods again today.

Arrgh! I know what u mean..the bulbs were peeking up, the edges were a bit green, and it was getting time to rake. I'd already picked up a lot of the loose trash. Now back to waiting again. At least no flower heads were out yet. They can't take it.

The bull calf must've had an itchy head this am. Just ramming it into the juniper and rubbing all around..  lw

Go ahead, rub it in.   :'(   I could mow my lawn too, but I can't seem to remember where I hide the snow tires for my lawn mower.
