What is a suggested tach for tuning a chain saw?

Stihl makes two nice wireless ones. I use the larger one, been real happy with it.

digital tacho up to 99K RPM, laser pointer. AU$59.

cheap at twice the price.

You can get an electronic timing light and tach, that works on both 2 and 4 cycle engines for $99 from www.sportsmansguide.com and www.northerntools.com.

When you use those Stihl tachs do you have to hook on a wire or just hold it close to the saw???

Just hold down by the top of the saw.

You can do either.
Clamp it to the sparkplug wire or hold it close.
